When Shlomo Sand published a landmark book on the intolerant nationalism of Zionism earlier this year, and the urgency of Israel becoming a society of its citizens, the New York Times called him a crackpot. But Sand actually knows Israeli attitudes. As does Ynet, which characterizes a poll of Israeli high school students as reflecting "racism":
[M]ore than half of them believe that Arabs should not be allowed to vote in Knesset elections. One out of every six students would not want to study in the same class with an Ethiopian or an immigrant from the former Soviet Union, and 21% of them think that "Death to Arabs" is a legitimate expression.
Nearly every second student would refuse orders to evacuate settlements.

It’s really impossible now not to insist that Israel is a racist society. The R-word needs to be dragged out into the open.
“Jewish AND democratic,” huh.
OT, but you gotta read this. Is Israel really as stupid as it’s coming off these days?

Not stupid, MRW. Just callous. They’ve suffered minimal punishment for their atrocities — in fact, like Nazi Germany before the war went south, they’re still acquiring land and their economy is in a feeding frenzy, while their citizenry lounges poolside on grassy lawns whereas just a few miles away, Palestinians and their farms thirst for the water that is being stolen right out from under their feet.
Why wouldn’t they celebrate it? At least among themselves. It’s kind of like how white folks will tell racist jokes when there are only other whites in the room.
interesting comment to the HuffPo article:
It is vulgar to relish power, it is inhuman to relish power that harms others
