Israelis shoot Maltese photographer as she films Gaza demonstration

on 30 Comments

zammitJust a flesh wound to the leg, I’m told: a Maltese volunteer was shot in Gaza by Israeli soldiers as she filmed a demonstration yesterday. Eva Bartlett of International Solidarity Movement (ISM) reports:

Bianca Zammit, shot in her outer thigh (leg) by armed Israeli soldiers as she filmed, unarmed, at a Palestinian demonstration against the Israeli-imposed "buffer zone". Bianca, about 3 metres to my left, was standing stationary, filming the IOF soldiers shooting on unarmed Palestinians between us and the border fence. As she was stationary, it is very unlikely that Bianca’s shooting was an accident.

Max Ajl has more on Zammit, a member of ISM, and the shooting here.

And Robert Hand at facebook offers this account:

“We were walking towards the fence surrounding Gaza when Israeli soldiers opened fire at us,” Zammit said. “People sought cover but I kept filming. When the protestors stood up again to keep walking ahead, they shot again and hit three of us.

“All the Palestinians do in these demonstrations is to get as close as possible to the fence and plant the Palestinian flag. We posed no threat whatsoever.”…

The Maltese Ambassador in Israel, Abraham Borg, said he will be demanding explanations from the Israeli government and that he was monitoring the case.

Are you denying Jews the right to blah blah in the Land of Israel?

That wound looks like it was caused by live ammunition. Target practice, indeed.

The IDF claims they aimed first over the heads of the protesters, then at their legs.

Now you are an expert in firearms?
What were the Israelis shooting .22’s? Very unlikely that is from live ammunition.

Uh, actually the IDF has been using .22’s at protests, specifically for shooting protesters in the legs. I don’t have the citation in front of me, nor the time to dig for it, but I read it either in a Mondo article or in a commenter link. Anyone who has it please post.

Wow, the neocon is even phony about his knowledge regarding firearms. Big surprise, I suppose — He’s fine with sacrificing our sons and daughters for the sake of his hatred of Muslims in a neocon Crusade, while his fat ass and his corpulent brood remain home.

A Hamas terrorist must have been using her as a huma shield. Either that or her filing style was too Maximalist.

The Israelis are so hardened that they make jokes about shooting Palestinians. “They say Palestinians can fly. How (response)? The IDF always says it shoots into the air over the heads, but they always seem to hit Palestinians.” ha ha ha…

    I am completely serious.

That’s a first intifada joke (along with “the IDF always shoots in the air – the air in Palestinian lungs”), and it is a protest joke, against official lies and murderous “rules” of engagement. There’s plenty of callousness and dehumanisation of Palestinians in Israel, but these jokes are meant to do just the opposite.

Well than Shmuel we can see how good the jokes were for shaming the IDF into ceasing this practice… Sometimes it is hard to tell the jeers from the cheers.

You are right, VR; of course Shmuel knows that. He’s on the side of
        basic universal human rights.

You might say the same of all forms of protest.

Sometimes it is hard to tell the jeers from the cheers.

Context helps. I don’t know the context in which you heard this joke, but for me it hs strong protest connotations, because the context in which I heard it was clearly critical of IDF practice and official lies.

In terms of the “success” of jokes such as this, they are certainly part of a process that began during the first intifada, whereby the IDF Spokesman lost virtually all credibility in Israel.

Who will protect Palestinians from growing settler extremism?

“For Palestinians in the West Bank, the sense of helplessness and frustration must be enormous. When they are attacked, they can almost never hope for justice within the framework of the legal system. Nor are they allowed to defend themselves. Nor can they expect the IDF to protect them. And even when they protest these injustices using nonviolent methods – marching, chanting and waving flags – they are punished with arrests and violence, with dehumanizing skunk gas and beatings. So what happens when there is no legal recourse or justice for the injured and no real civic structure, and when the moderates are systematically crushed? Surely these are the ideal psychological circumstances that make people vulnerable to the beckoning finger of extremism.

The Israeli government paid to put them there in the first place. Have you ever donated money to a Zionist “charity?” Has your family? You paid to put those settlers there.

Settlers would have to seriously reassess their commitment to colonies if they had the same price and allocation of utilities as local Palestinian population. But the colonies are considered under Israel’s sovereignty, so Israeli population in them is living under separate rules.

South Africa ( who knows one thing or two about such laws) condemns ‘infiltration order’

South Africa, because of its history, is particularly sensitive to the infringement of human rights that the carrying of a permit implies and should this “permit” not be the correct one, the unilateral punishments that can be brought to bear on an individual by the state, without the individual having recourse to an independent court of law,” the statement read.
