Smear tactics show that lobby is losing power in discourse

Yesterday Jeffrey Goldberg reached a fresh low, blaming Stephen Walt for the anti-Semitic emails that Goldberg gets. He titled his post, "Stephen Walt's Mailbag," then quoted a bunch of scabrous and anti-semitic emails that were actually in Goldberg's inbox.

Crazy. Andrew Sullivan points out that this is vicious guilt beyond even association. Daniel Luban says, shrewdly, "The fact that so many of Walt and Mearsheimer’s enemies have descended into this sort of hysteria...[Goldberg lately went after Mearsheimer, too] has arguably been more helpful to their case than any number of endorsements of their position would have been."

Three years ago at Yivo Institute, Jeffrey Goldberg said that he would refuse to debate Walt and Mearsheimer. Now he is smearing them day after day.

I think the cause of this shift is obvious: Goldberg and his ilk are slowly being edged off the stage by Mearsheimer, Walt, and other critics of Israel. Early this week, Tablet labeled its piece on critics of Israel (notably Walt, Sullivan, Glenn Greenwald, and Jim Lobe) that inaugurated the smear season, "agents of influence." Right: we have influence in the discourse. Young people don't trust Jeffrey Goldberg as a guide. They're looking around, they're questioning the peace process and the idea of two states. It's just a matter of time before mainstream editors start trusting us, too. The New York Times' publication of Glenn Loury talking about Zionism and the Nakba and Robert Mackey talking sense about the flotilla is huge.

Goldberg has had a long run. Consider the fact that early on he seemed content to pursue a parochial career-- at the Jerusalem Post and the Forward-- then found a golden road opening before him because the mainstream (and yes, pro-Zionist media bosses) trusted Jewish race-men-- religious Zionists, like Goldberg. When he got to The New Yorker, it was said that he was editor David Remnick's id, willing to say stuff that Remnick wasn't going to say himself but wanted to hear. (Like bad information about Saddam's alleged ties to Al-Qaeda). Now Goldberg is just Goldberg's id, and the tantrums show he's losing power.

Further there is nothing to indicate that the alleged emails were not cobbled together by Goldberg himself or some of his paid lackies. Notice the similarity in style, tone, and content they all have.

my thoughts exactly. anti semitism is still on the top of their lists for cause d’jour. it provides the perfect victim backdrop from which to launch his tirade, again. they keep humpin that ol whore, sad indeed. what idiot is going to bother complaining to goldberg, he’s so yesterday.

Are we sure the media owners are going to allow for an honest debate? They’re doing the hiring after all.

Maybe they’re just following the throngs who now recieve their news over the internet? Running in front of the mob, so to speak.

  3. Kathleen says:

“and yes, pro-Zionist media bosses” Thank you. After six decades of silence the silence continues. Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, Diane Rehm, Neil Conan, Scott Simon, Ed, etc etc all silent about the Goldstone Report. Did not touch it. Silence

    • Citizen says:

How about Fox channel; they don’t touch it either. Nor does PBS.
Left alone with it, is CSPAN.

      • C Span is filtered as well, Citizen.
In 2005, Deborah Lipstadt “censored” C Span link to nytimes.com
in a very messy and public way. C Span has been walking on eggs ever since.
In addition, perhaps because C Span is broadcast over Voice of America, and because James Glassman, who interfaces amongst C Span, VOA, and the Pentagon, AND is a zionist with the accompanying assertive pro-Israel stance, C Span is not as willing or able boldly to carry on a robust conversation that questions the US-Israel relationship.

  4. Mack says:

Much ado. More to the point- not one of the emails Jeff Goldberg cites is remotely anti-Semitic. They’re blunt, boorish at worst. Goldberg, this Lee Smith (presumambly not the retired baseball reliever) are typical of people who opt to defend ethnic cleansing and racist persecution. So they try and change the subject and smear the good people who are not shy about pointing out Israel’s Evil acts. It’s really a disgrace that these bizarre people are able to make any kind of living spreading their awful, unpatriotic lies.

  5. seanmcbride says:

The burden of proof is on Jeffrey Goldberg to verify that he himself (or one of his confederates) didn’t author the piece of hate mail he complained about.

To the point that the Jerusalem Post, Haaretz, Ynet News and other major Israeli and Jewish sites often host hate-filled and racist comments from pro-Israel activists, Jeffrey Goldberg so far has offered no reply.

Main impressions of Goldberg: he’s an ethnocentric obsessive, a hater, a smear artist and an intellectual lightweight who can’t handle serious debate. For his role in helping to lie the United States into a foreign policy disaster in Iraq, he should be ridiculed forever more for his shoddy punditry.

  6. Dog was howling at the moon expecting the neighbour would join in howling.
But the neighbour came out and enjoyed the truth cominog out of the darkness. Dog tried to wag its tail in mnay directions to emhasize how racist, vulgar, pornographic pleasure the neighbours are getting from the cesspool of the moonlight and how the farway neighbours from Europe and Middle East were happy to see the light of fascism emanating from the dark ugly blemished moon.

  7. Nitpicking : I think it’s his column that’s called “Agents of Influence” ; the name of his article was Mainstreaming Hate (which is even worse).
And it’s too bad that people thing that they are going Palestinians a service by sending dumb emails to Goldberg. Some of those messages are just incredibly idiotic (not all of them), and give this poor bloated and insecure pre-pubescent some ammunition to use. The whole thing just descends into a brain-dead shouting fest…

And yes, it’s even worse that Goldberg has nothing more imaginative to say about anything than to reveal to us the contents of his inbox, as if he was revealing to us a great mystery with the waving of his magic wand of truth. He’s made up great stories before, hasn’t he?

    • annie says:

i doubt they are. the timing is too suspicious syncing w/the smith piece. their routine is well oiled. they always buffer their message w/dual or triple mouthpieces simultaneously harping the same message.

but then i haven’t read phil’s supporting links yet. i can just imagine tho.

      • it’s too bad that people think that they are doing Palestinians a service by sending dumb emails to Goldberg

i doubt they are. the timing is too suspicious syncing w/the smith piece.

I’m not sure about this. It’s possible that he did really receive these emails – things move quickly on the internet – for example, I’m sure that some of those who commented on the fabulous Smith “essay” in Tablet were directed there from sites like this, or others – word gets around quick. If you look at youtube videos about events in the Occupied Territories, you see some of the same types of juvenile rants. These can’t all be planted in order to prove that there are “antisemites”, there are people who really write these things, it’s not impossible, why not?

That being said, Goldberg needs to put a sock in it, I don’t disagree with that. He’s done more than enough damage.

        • annie says:

These can’t all be planted in order to prove that there are “antisemites”, there are people who really write these things, it’s not impossible, why not?

of course there are anti semites out there. i just seriously doubt they don’t ramp it up. for example it is quite common when really bad news comes out that could seriously damage israel (like the bibi tape) on the kos diaries some poster no one has any familiarity woth shows up and says something very inflammatory and then everyone chimes in about how rude that is and then before you know it the whole thread is totally highjacked. it’s happened here on several occasions. screams of anti semitism is their favorite weapon and i put nothing past them including false flags to justify their whining. of course it is not impossible for me to be wrong but i doubt i am. i think it would be incredulous if i found out each and everyone of goldberg’s emails in that post were from genuine anti semites. that is just my opinion.

        • Citizen says:

At the risk of repeating myself, my memory of most of those emails goldberg listed were that they had no handles or dates and were all brittle, abstract & generalized comments, many of them arguably not even anti-semitic; further, none to my recollection displayed vulgar words…
again, they all seemed cobbled up by some unimaginative and very boring (and probably bored) lackey of goldberg’s, if not goldberg himself.

        • Mooser says:

“again, they all seemed cobbled up by some unimaginative and very boring (and probably bored) lackey”

I’ll go check my files. But I can’t be held responsible for e-mails written while subconscious.

Annie – “of course there are anti semites out there”

And of coursest there are organized, disciplined, sometimes paid squads of Zionist propaganda agents out there.

Who are well known for their taking part in “false-flag operations” –just like their armed brethren.

Mainstreaming antizionism is what we still dream of.

  8. Internet has mainstreamed the truth and it hurting Goebles’s gangs.

  9. Now it makes sense why Goldberg and his “publicist ” ae ignoring to mention the book “Quicksand-Americas persuit of power in the middle east” by G Wawro. They just dont want anyone to know that there is another erudite scholar exposing the dog of Goebbles howling at the moon.

  10. The accusations that the content, the manner, that the content is presented invites more than intellectual rigor, is true.

Its been true since the day that “The Israel Lobby” appeared in print, and was defended (defensively) in public presentation. And, its been true since the day that this blog opened.

The truth is dual. To only react defensively, is to be reactionary.

Be strong in your perceptions and conclusions, and express them clearly so people can understand clearly and kindly.

Fascist movements often emerge from idealistic pursuits, and it is partially the responsibility of the idealists to convey their thinking in ways that minimize the fascistic forms of response.

    • The one aspect that Phil and Adam deserve a lot of credit is in developing the site from their own initiative, without the sanction and/or funding from external sources (though the “Nation Institute” status may make that accomodation actually a falsehood).

That contrasts with the other subsidized bloggers.

      • Mooser says:

Thanks Richard, but things are going really well here. The “snap” peas are delicious, and we have more than we need, the parsnips are coming on strong, and the potatoes, three varieties, are the best we ever grew, and my wife won Fust-Prize for her finger potatoes at the Ketchup County Fair. The tomatoes are growing, and we have a bumper crop of lettuce, chard and spinach.
Of course, no-one makes a word-salad like you, I admit that.
But I’m thinking you are taking David Byrne’s dictate just a little to literally.

What the ones Goldberg published have in common is a lot of anger, mostly expressed in crude language.

What they don’t have in common is anti-semitism – some are, some aren’t (as Phil notes). The first 6 I wouldn’t consider anti-semitic. Don’t know how to classify the ones telling him to get out of the country. I’d personally urge him to stay, despite the facts that he can undoubtedly do more damage here to the cause of equal rights & justice in Palestine, he really does seem more loyal to Israel than the U.S. and I really don’t want him. I wouldn’t even tell white racists to go back to Europe. Hm. Maybe I should.

It is interesting that Goldberg couched the “Boycott Israel” message within the crude emails he published. A not-so-subtle reminder that sanctions are great for any number of Israel’s targeted enemies, but an expression of racism when directed at Israel.

    • when will citizens in the US get to the point that the entrails are examined and poked and probed for hints or evidences or dog whistles of anti-Americanism?

  12. There is another compelling significance to this post by Phil/Walt/Greenwald/others. That is the definition of LINES in the sand, personal lines. You are enemy, you are friend.

That CONFLICTS with the concept of open and intelligent discussion of ideas, weighing of ideas, exploration of alternatives.

There is then no possibility of rallying the liberals that Phil, Adam and others make a point of personally offending.

If Ali Abunimeh can find value in a proposal by Michael Oren, then Phil can open his posting policies to those that contribute content and similarly “out of the box” proposals.

I personally find the selective application of “moderation status” to be hypocritical, especially as it is applied to me, but also to others that consider multiple perspectives in every post they make, and also to those that even present raw “hasbara”.

“The war of ideas in the middle east”?????

    • Mooser says:

“then Phil can open his posting policies to those that contribute content and similarly “out of the box” proposals.”

Witty, you have to be able to write understandable sentences to post articles at Mondoweiss.
And besides, don’t you have your own blog? Serve up your word-salad there, instead of trying to suck off of Mondoweiss hits.

  13. radii says:

the bright shining light of truth is overwhelming the columns of lies until soon they can barely be seen … the foundation of zionism are these lies … the desperation on the neocon/zioagent front reveals their anxiety as they finally lose their ill-gotten power over the American public perception and gov’t

    • zionism traces its roots to 1st century Rome.
Persia was there, an eyewitness to history.

zionism joined the nationalist movement at the breakup of the Ottoman Empire.
Persia was not part of the Ottoman empire; Iran could look on as a disinterested third party, an eyewitness to history.

zionism’s came into its own at Russian revolution/bolshevism
Iran was not involved, it only observed; an eyewitness to history.

zionism/Israel’s surge came at end of WWII.
Iran was nonaligned/neutral in WWII, occupied by US, Russia, Great Britain; a unwilling host to the shapers of history.

Iran was uninvolved in all of zionism’s historic stepping stones, aware but not a part. Through all of these points in zionism’s history, Jews in the hundred thousands resided securely in Iran.

Iran has been the eye witness to the entirety of zionism’s history.

It makes sense, then, that a conference on zionism’s most important motivational brand, the holocaust, would have to be shut down by zionists, just as any lawyer (Dershowitz?) would do all in his power to discredit the prosecution’s star witness.

Ahmadinejad pushed open the door on the “columns of lies;” for that, Iran must be punished.

  14. sherbrsi says:

That says it all about the Zionists; unable to engage in any sort of civil or logical discourse, they resort to disinformation, slander and obfuscation.

  15. Stephen Walt is one of the main mouth-pieces of the well organized and international Palestine Lobby.

The effect of the Palestine Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy as well as UN and international attacks on Israel needs closer study.

    • My above comment was delayed for over six hours so far, it may not be published. If it is published the conversation will be far below it. This is the tactic the Anti-Zionist censors on this website use to silence reasonable dissent.

      • Mooser says:

Aww, poor bubele. Gee, maybe you ZIonist-shills could get your own website. If that’s too complicated, or if you are too busy studying the Talmud for new military tactics, hire a consultant.
It’s awful the way no-one lets a Zionist get a word in edgewise, isn’t it.

Yesw, I know, Max, the food here is terrible, like poison. And the portions are too small and take too long to come.

  16. just want to make sure Dr. Stephen Sniegoski’s writing, for example, Iraq The War on Iraq: Conceived in Israel , and and his book, The Transparent Cabal: The Neoconservative Agenda, War in the Middle East, and the National Interest of Israel are included in this discussion. When critics like Dershowitz can’t find anything else to slam about Walt and Mearsheimer’s writing, he says their facts are not supported.

Sniegoski’s book, is “Israel Lobby” on steroids, with footnotes aplenty (As well, “Israel Lobby” is more than adequately sourced and footnoted).

  17. Rosenberg (via Lobelog):

A few weeks ago I wrote that the Atlantic’s Jeff Goldberg was busy at work on a magnum opus for “The Atlantic” calling for a bombing attack by the United States on Iran.

The article will appear as a cover story in August.

    link to tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com

gets it. The article by Smith and now the slasher note referenced above are part of a deliberate and coordinated plan to preemptively “soften up” what is sure to be a muscular response to Goldberg’s opening salvo in the coming Iran debate. Col. Goldberg is positioning himself such that he will be able to say: “Oh, yeah, those crazies. Obsessed with Israel. Purveyors of hate. Just see here ….” and reference the Smith article. It makes complete sense that he is going after Mearsheimer and Walt, in particular.

Get out in front of this, Phil. You and Glenn and Sulivan and like merry fellow travellers should work in kind. Rosenberg has started the ball in motion. Pile on. The more disinfectant, the better.

    • Also meant to add that surely, Phil, with your journo connections, you can get some more dope on this Atlantic article? Man, if you could steal some thunder here, that’d be very effective. The idea is to get the jump and establish the terms of debate in your favour. Certainly, that’s what Goldberg & Co. are trying to do.

I am surely not telling you anything. Just poking ya.

    • potsherd says:

It’s hardly a coincidence that this is coming just when the lickspittle AIPAC warmongers in Congress are bringing forward H res 1553 to clear the road for the bombers.

It’s clear that Obama has caved in to Netanyahu to allow this to go forward, in exchange for … more ethnic cleansing in the WB.

  18. hayate says:

“Smear tactics show that lobby is losing power in discourse”

The ziofascists have always relied primarily upon smear tactics. That’s their power, they smear and the zionist media backs them up no matter how absurd the lie.

    Psychopathic god wrote:

“when will citizens in the US get to the point that the entrails are examined and poked and probed for hints or evidences or dog whistles of anti-Americanism?”

I don’t know, but I suspect it will *never* happen until at least when, in response to dubious accusations of anti-semitism against people who really are only concerned with the U.S.’s overly-close relationship with Israel in all the various media, it is politely but *routinely* pointed out that it is then an absolutely and equally valid question whether the accuser(s) aren’t really just shilling for a foreign country at the expense of the U.S.

Indeed I suspect such a polite but routine questioning might go a long way towards helping the situation because of its very reasonableness. And in this vein I don’t think it’s unreasonable to also then politely inquire as to the accuser’s citizenship status, which further strikes me as eminently germane.

  20. Bandolero says:

    Phiip Weiss writes:
“emails that were actually in Goldberg’s inbox”

I doubt that. All I have seen is: “texts that Goldberg claims to have come into his Goldberg’s email inbox”. Given Goldbergs record of truth I would not be surprised, if Goldberg invented these alleged emails himself.

Did anyone remark, that Goldberg did not publish, whom the emails come from? Why? Does Goldberg wants to protect the identity of the people sending him unsolicited email to attack him?

And did anyone remark, that Goldberg didn’t publish the headers of the alleged emails? Headers bear valuable information – in most cases the IP – to trace, where an email actually come from. But as it is a lot machine generated information it’s much more difficult to fabricate headers than just email texts.

But of course, it may be true that the emails where in Goldbergs inbox and he just quoted them, er, a little bit out of context.

    Imagine this:

From: MFA Israel – Shturman department
    To: Jeffrey Goldberg
    Subject: The smears you requested
    Body: Dear Jeffrey,

please find attached some disgusting texts you can publicly use to claim that they were in your inbox to smear Stephen Walt. Be assured that we have carefully fabricated them in the best interest of Israel.

    Long live Israel
    MFA Israel – Shturman department
    (Attachments)

Wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the way the “emails” came into Goldbergs inbox. :-)

  21. Missed this yesterday. From Friday. Rosenberg is all over this. It completely made my morning.

Jeff Goldberg’s reputation today is solely as an apologist for Israeli policies. This isn’t 2002. Goldberg in 2010 has as much credibility on any matter related to Israel as Andrew Breitbart now has on race. Except Breitbart is all talk. Goldberg walked the walk, just not here.

As for Stephen Walt, I envy the guy. He and John Mearsheimer wrote a book that utterly changed the terms of the debate on the Middle East. And he just gives the neocons conniption fits. Honest to God, you just know that just thinking of Walt and Marsheimer keeps Goldberg up at night. Sweet!

More on Goldberg soon, especially after his War Manifesto hits the internet.
