2 homes razed in Area C
QALQILIYA (Ma’an) — Two homes in the village of Azzun Atma were demolished on Tuesday, when Israeli Civil Administration officials executed two orders claiming permits were not obtained to build the structures.  The village, stranded between the Green Line, Israel’s separation barrier and two settlements, is only partially under Palestinian control. Areas of the village near the barrier and settlements come under Israeli civil and military jurisdiction.

Municipality demolishes Palestinian shopfront outside Old City
The Jerusalem Municipality demolished a Palestinian kiosk in Sultan Street, outside Herod’s Gate of the Old City, this morning. Kiosk manager Wa’el Razem was not issued prior warning of the demolition, carried out by a large joint force of Israeli military special forces and Municipality workers. The shopfront was dismantled and its contents confiscated. Officers informed Razem that a demolition order, or prior warning, was not legally required for the operation. Razem estimated that the loss of the 20 square meter kiosk, which has been in operation for 11 years, has lost him approximately 150,000 NIS. The income earnt from the kiosk has supported not only Razem but 30 of his family members since its opening.

Israeli bulldozers clear rubble of Jerusalem hotel
JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Israeli bulldozers began on Wednesday to remove the rubble of the Shepherd’s Hotel, after it was demolished in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in Jerusalem two days earlier.  Bulldozing resumed after an Israeli court rejected a petition submitted by the Husseini family, which claims ownership of the site that is contested by an Israeli settler group.

Israeli military court extends jail term for Palestinian anti-wall activist
Amnesty International has condemned an Israeli military appeal court’s decision to extend the prison sentence of a Palestinian non-violent activist, convicted over his involvement in organizing protests in the occupied West Bank.  Abdallah Abu Rahma, head of the Popular Committee Against the Wall in the West Bank village of Bil’in, had his sentence extended from 12 months to 16 months by the Israeli Military Court of Appeals at Ofer in the West Bank on Tuesday, after the prosecution argued that his initial sentence was too lenient.

A year in jail not enough punishment for protesting, Jesse Bacon
Israel’s military went to court for the right to keep holding in jail Palestinian organizer Abdallah Abu Rahmah, the cousin of slain protester Jawaher Abu Rahmah. Happily for the Israeli Army, it’s a military court so they complied. Abdallah is now to serve an additional 2-3 months. Presumably they believe that’s enough that when Abdallah is released, Palestinians won’t mind having their land stolen or their political and human rights denied. I wouldn’t bet on it. I think the fact that a man committed to unarmed protest can end up in millitary court tells you everything you need to know about the Israeli regime. This will definitely be an example to others, but not the way the military wants it to be.

Army Jeeps Enter Beit Ommar Firing Tear Gas
On January 9th, 2010, at about 4pm, three Israeli army jeeps entered the Palestinian village of Beit Ommar from the nearby settlement of Karmei Tsur. For the last several weeks, Israeli Forces have periodically raided the village at different times of the day. The reasons behind these incursions are unclear, as the soldiers make no arrests and seem to have no obvious purpose other than to harass residents of Beit Ommar.

Inside Qalqilyia: Choked by a wall and 12 settlements, its water and ancestral lands stolen,  Alice Rothchild
Qalqilyia, a bulge of land in the West Bank protruding westward against the Green Line, was the first city in 2002 to be fully enclosed by the separation wall, with one checkpoint, like the neck of a bottle, emptying the inhabitants into the West Bank. Once known as “the city of peace,” Israelis from Kfar Saba used to shop in Qalqilyia and there was a vigorous commercial and agricultural relationship between Palestinians and the nearby Jews. I first visited the area in 2005 and I am happy to see Suhad Hashem again, who offers to take us on another tour of the area.

and another martyr dies in Gaza, Max Ajl
I am trying to come up with something to say about the body I saw yesterday in the morgue at Kamal Adwan hospital. That body had belonged to an old man, 65 years old, who was shot through the neck by an Israeli sniper from 300 meters away while he was tying up his donkey on land he’d been farming for 40 years. An Israeli sniper murdered him for trespassing on his own land next to his own home in the buffer zone. He is the third civilian to have been killed the buffer zone in Gaza since I got here. No words will bring him back, and no coverage from mainstream news agencies will resurrect him. No eulogy will roll back time for his fatherless children. There’s no way to beg that IDF soldier not to murder Shaban Karmout, there’s no way to warp this world and ask him not to tie up his donkey but to remain inside his small home in Beit Lehiya where it’s safe and the Israeli army can’t shoot him. And there’s no outrage into which one can rub the faces of those who tolerate outrages that will outrage them enough to say that this is one outrage too many. It was not one too many, because there will be more, there will be many more, and tallying up their names in our notebooks with acid in our eyes will do nothing to prevent the slow filling of Gaza’s cemeteries with old men who remember fleeing in terror before Zionist militia. What can I say about Shaban Karmout that doesn’t turn him into a statistic in the endless pile of corpses that might slowly overwhelm the psyches of the conflicted people who support this obscenity? Or those who are not conflicted but simply accept that murdering old men is OK because once our old men were murdered?

Detainees
14-Year-Old Beit Ommar Resident Released From Israeli Prison
On January 7th, 2011, Mohammad Awad, age 14, was released after being held for more than a month and a half in an Israeli prison. Mohammad was arrested on November 20th, 2010, during one of the weekly Saturday unarmed demonstrations in Beit Ommar.  The Israeli military wrongfully charged Mohammad with throwing stones. However, numerous eye-witnesses, including international and Israeli solidarity activists, claim that Mohammad was not throwing stones but merely participating in an unarmed demonstration in his own village against the neighboring Israeli settlement of Karmei Tsur. Five solidarity activists, all adults, were also arrested along with Mohammad but were released late in the evening of November 20th.

Analysis/Op-ed
Israel’s public relations policy: never apologise, always confuse
Never believe the Israeli army killed an unarmed civilian until it’s officially denied. This paraphrasing of Mark Twain’s “never believe anything until it has officially been denied,” should become a mantra for journalists operating in the Middle East.  It is a point reinforced recently by the death of a West Bank Palestinian resident, Jawaher abu Rahmah, who died from tear gas exposure during the recent demonstration against Israel’s separation wall and land annexation in the village of Bil’in.

Why the Destruction of the Shepherd Hotel Could be a Good Thing for Democracy, Joseph Dana
The Israeli government allowed Jewish settlers to take over an abandoned hotel in the heart of Arab East Jerusalem in order to build a Jewish only settlement yesterday. From Washington to Brussels, diplomatic representatives have raised concern and dismay about the unilateral Israeli decision. The international community has raised questions about the viability of the peace process given the climate of reckless and uncompromising Israeli settlement expansion. Sadly, the destruction of the Shepherd Hotel shows that the two state solution is simply not a reality. Instead of bemoaning Israeli settlement activity and fighting for a two state solution which is almost impossible, it is time to start fighting for democratic rights for all of the residents of the land under Israeli military rule.

Overnight traumas, Fidaa Abu Assi
How fast everything happens in Gaza. Everything goes very well; however, everything could turn upside down overnight. How hard when you are put in a position where you cannot expect how the next second of your life would look like– and if you expected something, you would probably find the very opposite.  In Gaza, traumatic things happen all of a sudden and this would have an irreparably everlasting effect upon you. In a blink of an eye –hold on! Don’t freak out- you could become homeless, parentless, jobless, ownerless, penniless, hopeless, helpless, lifeless and a long list of an endless-less.

When Israeli military propagandists refrain from providing justifications for their murders, the New York Times volunteers justifications
Look at this typical piece.  The Ethan Bronner-Isabel Kershner Israeli propaganda machine is at work.  The Israeli government did not comment on the killing of a Palestinians so the editors of the New York Times volunteers a justification of the murder: “Palestinians accused Israeli forces on Monday of shooting a 65-year-old Gazan on his farm near the border with Israel. The Israeli military said it had no knowledge of the shooting.  The farmer’s son said that three gunshots were fired from an Israeli watchtower overlooking the family’s property, which is close to the security fence that marks the border, and that one of the bullets hit his father in the neck. Israeli forces, wary of Palestinian militants’ trying to come into Israel, have warned people in Gaza not to approach the fence.”

To such an Israel I shall be a traitor, Rechavia Berman
The shameful step taken by Israel’s laughingstock of a parliament yesterday is, at least for now, political circus and nothing more. This “Inquiry Committee” has no real authority. It has no power of summons and no power to punish. One may comfortably ignore any summons from it and one may, like the wonderful Mikhael Manekin, accept the summons in order to spit its foul temerity right back in its face. But to repeat the main issue of this note, the headline reads: The Gestapo is not yet at the door. That may yet happen, and this pathetic circus may be the high water mark after which the slime will recede. Now, having said that, let us for a moment address the issue as though Michael Ben Ari’s fantasy has any actual teeth, and respond as follows.

Coming Home, Joharah Baker for MIFTAH
At passport control at Washington DC’s Dulles Airport, the border officer took one look at my children’s and my US passports and stamped us through with a smile. We were, after all, technically “home” and countries normally treat their citizens with dignity and respect. The ease with which I entered (and later exited) the United States was shocking to me, given the difficulty with which I enter and exit my own country each time I travel. But this simple act – for me, entering my birthplace, America – as opposed to my ancestral homeland Palestine – epitomizes everything the Israeli occupation represents. And this, I find extremely disturbing.

Sectarianism and Its Discontents, JOSEPH MASSAD
The horrifying scene of carnage in a Coptic church in Alexandria, ending not only the passing year but also the lives of innocent people, was not just shocking to everyone in Egypt and the region, but also terrifying to some who began to postulate that this might very well usher in the end of the presence of Christians in the country, if not in the Arab world at large. The panic and dismay visited on most people have understandably led some to rush to offer dramatic scenarios for the immediate future. It strikes me as more opportune, however, especially, in these times to offer an analysis of what is unfolding that is informed not only by the past and current situation of Egypt, but also by the regional context in which this violent act was committed. Fanning the flames of panic and sectarianism will only lead to more such violence without improving the security situation nor would it bring about the sought after civic peace.

What Moqtada’s return means for America, Michael Boyle
The militant cleric is back from exile, cementing Iran’s hold on Iraqi politics and signalling the final eclipse of US influence.  When Moqtada al-Sadr left Iraq in 2007, many US officials hoped that his Sadrist movement – which had waged a bitter insurgency against American forces there since 2004 – would fade from prominence once the Iraqi government retook control of much of the country from the insurgency. His hurried departure from Iraq was prompted by a joint US-Iraq effort to confront his militia, the Jaish al-Mahdi (JAM), and to restore parts of Baghdad that they ran to Iraqi government control. Without even a formal announcement, Sadr fled to Iran to escape the crackdown, infuriating those among his supporters who wanted him to continue the resistance against U.S. forces and the Iraqi government.
