More bollocks from David Mamet

Wild David Mamet interviewed by John Gapper in the Financial Times (thx to Voskamp/Sullivan):

[H]e thinks Israel has been betrayed by the American left.

“The speeches that Charles Lindbergh made and Oswald Mosley made in the 1930s are the same speeches that are being made today, only slightly more politely: ‘The Jews are bringing us to war. Perhaps we should give their state away.’ The liberals in my neighbourhood wouldn’t give away Brentwood to the Palestinians but they want to give away Tel Aviv.”

But attitudes in Europe to the Middle East tend to be more sceptical about Israel than American ones, I interject. Does he believe that anyone who disputes Israel’s land claims and believes in reallocation of territory to the Palestinians is anti-Semitic?

...He smiles ruefully. “I love the British. Whatever education I have comes from reading your writers and yet, time and time again, for example reading Trollope, there is the stock Jew. Even in George Eliot, God bless her. And the authors of today ... I’m not going to mention names because of your horrendous libel laws but there are famous dramatists and novelists over there whose works are full of anti-Semitic filth....

Mamet should read Mark Twain and Ernest Hemingway and Truman Capote. There are two or three stock Jews in Breakfast at Tiffany's. More bollocks:

“There is a profound and ineradicable taint of anti-Semitism in the British ... The paradigmatic Brit as far as the Middle East goes is [TE] Lawrence. That’s just the fact. Even before the oil was there, you loved the desert. It had all these wacky characters ... But there is a Jewish state there ratified by the United Nations and you want to give it away to some people whose claim is rather dubious.”

maybe a review of marmot’s book is in order, what with his serial pontificating on the subject.

  2. Keith says:

David Mamet is the mirror image of an anti-Semite who sees Jewish conspiracies everywhere. He is obsessed with his illusory “victim hood.”

and here’s dave stating his admiration for palin.

Mamet sets the standard for arrogant, pseudo-intellectual, defiantly, proudly racist anti-Arabism in the US. Elie Wiesel is a close second. In Europe, there’s Bernard-Henri Levy. Other contenders: Michael Walzer, Michael Ignatieff, Bernard Lewis, Ruth Wedgwood. I exclude possible candidates like Alan Dershowitz or the Pipes brigade because they are so completely unhinged, they can no longer maintain an pretense of intellectualism.

  5. Chespirito says:

James Wolcott on his wonderful blog has been all over the Mamet crackup— link to vanityfair.com
Mamet’s verbal shtick, though occasionally good pyrotechnic fun, has always seemed the expression of a smallish white guy with XXXL manhood issues. All of which the playwright has now made artlessly explicit, his mannered tough talk now indistinguishable from Hannity inanity.

thanks for that, chespirito. my brother and i went to see ‘oleanna’ when it first came out years ago, and after a few minutes of the special effects of mamet’s hiccupingly, interrupted dialogue, you’ve quickly had enough. see also ‘spartan’ for a taste. a one trick pony, whose one trick can be entertaining if you haven’t seen it in a while.

      love this vanity fair quote:

and the big-shot cigar smoke he’s blowing into everyone’s faces as he rides over illegal immigrants with his golf cart.

perfect. all these randian, neo-lib types live in a bubble of narcissism. people rightly make fun of al gore for ‘inventing the internet’, yet lurch into sycophantic spasms at the sound of of gates’ or jobs’ blabbering. self-made billionaires. as if there were such a thing.

      Chespirito,

I clicked on the vanityfair.com link to read more of what I thought was Wolcott in your “Mamet’s verbal shtick….Hannity inanity.” But it was you. Nice.

Wolcott preempting the sequel and conjuring up Norman Podhoretz is delish.

  6. David Samel says:

Is he claiming that the Palestinian claim to Palestine is “rather dubious” or am I misreading? Reminds me of Stephen Colbert’s suggestion to Michael Oren that the Palestinians go back to where they came from.

  7. MRW says:

Mamet’s become a little screwy and self-important living up there in the Vermont woods. His screeds on Israel and Jewishness are equally isolating.

  8. “Does he believe that anyone who disputes Israel’s land claims and believes in reallocation of territory to the Palestinians is anti-Semitic?”

Note how Mamet does not answer this question in any way, or in any way which makes sense.

  9. As you all know first prize is a Cadillac El Dorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives.

The Palestinians will at least get a set of steak knives for their trouble, no?

AND LAST, BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST:

David Mamet: “I’m crazy about Sarah Palin” ~ Hot Air, 06/12/11
[Drama Queens of a Feather, Flock Together! - J.L.D.]

What does he think of Barack Obama? “The question is can he run on his record in 2012 and the answer is no, because it’s abysmal. He took a trillion dollars and where it went, nobody knows. He dismantled health care, he weakened America around the world, he sold out the state of Israel. All he’s got to run on is being a Democrat and indicting the other fellow.”

So who would he prefer as president? He replies that he is “not current” with the Republican contenders until I mention Sarah Palin. “I am crazy about her,” he answers immediately. “Would she make a good candidate for president? I don’t know but she seems to have succeeded at everything she put her hand to.” [And how about that rack, dude? And them gams! - J.L.D.]

    LOL…silly man.
He reminds me off this guy I knew back in the fifties who accidentally came into some money. He bought this huge car, a Caddy or Buick or something. He was such a small fellow he could hardly see over the steering wheel and every time he turned a corner in it he would have hold on to the steering wheel for dear life to keep from sliding across the seat to the other side.
