I am not inclined to make predictions, at least publicly, but three months ago at a breakfast in Berkeley, I predicted that Barack Obama was likely to respond positively to the widespread support within the Jewish community for the release of Jonathan Pollard-- not out of any concern for the convicted spy, now an Israeli citizen, but because without some major gesture on his part, Obama would not be able to visit Israel with any assurance from the Israeli government that he would return alive. And it is the general consensus within the Jewish community that in order to maintain the support of the major Jewish donors in the 2012 election, as well as Jewish voters in the key states such as Florida New York, and Pennsylvania, the president must make a public visit to Israel and not one of those unannounced secret fly-ins such as he has made to Baghdad and Kabul.
The other day, after Michael Oren, the Israeli ambassador who, like Pollard, was born and raised in the U.S., visited his new countryman, the first such visit in five years by an Israeli official, Weiss wrote and asked if I didn't need to eat some crow since Pollard was still securely locked away in prison and had even been denied permission to attend the funeral of his father, who had been a professor at Notre Dame.
I still have not changed my opinion although I was surprised when I read in May, after my breakfast prediction, that Obama had been invited by Israeli President Simon Peres to attend a president’s conference in Israel in July. Here and here.
That was the last mention of that invitation. July has come and gone and there have been no new invitations from Tel Aviv and I am not expecting one. I think the White House believes Israel has become too scary, that its security forces have been so heavily infiltrated by religious nutcases who answer first to their rabbis and that the Netanyahu government, realizing that, can offer him no guarantee of protection. If so, they are probably right and that the only way he can get a "Get out of Israel Alive" card is by freeing Pollard.
On receiving Weiss’s email, I Googled "Obama should go to Israel," and the response I got back was "What, do you think he's crazy?" In a more serious vein, I found a piece from the Washington Post nee Commentary blogger, Jennifer Rubin back in May after his AIPAC speech which is very, very telling. Headlined, "Obama shouldn’t go to Israel." Rubin presciently wrote, suspecting, I believe, that it might be actually worse: "Obama’s standing in Israel is exceptionally poor and certainly won’t improve after the most recent controversy. If he goes to Israel, he’ll be booed, and there will be outbursts and demonstrations. "
Now, things may be changing. On August 3rd, the JTA reported that Daniel Shapiro, the new, Hebrew-speaking US ambassador to Israel and long-time Obama aide presented his credentials to Peres and told him that the president wants to visit Israel although he didn’t say when.
After watching Shapiro being interviewed by Israel’s Channel 2, Ha’aretz’s wise Akiva Eldar noted that “The newly-arrived diplomat's decision to jump immediately into the media water and the friendly, almost fawning, content of his interview show that Shapiro was not sent here to promote peace between the Israeli leader and his Palestinian counterpart. Rather, his goal is to promote peace between the American president and American Jewish leaders. His main job will be to dismantle every Israeli land mine on his boss' road to a second term.”
Shapiro’s predecessor, James Cunningham, had also indicated in early July that Obama planned to visit Israel but as the Israeli Insider blog cynically pointed out, “He didn't mention who in Israel invited him.”
By coincidence, Pollard had major surgery the day before Shapiro’s interview and reportedly will require another operation, clearing the path for Obama to give him a "compassionate” release.

This is the case in the US, as well, although the racism is somewhat slightly less overt. The Israelis make no secret of their racism because they don’t give a damn what the rest of the world thinks of them. That is also one of the problems facing Obama should he go to Israel as well as the Netanyahu government that would be charged with protecting him.
Both governments must have realized by now that any Israeli who takes down Obama is going to be a hero to a substantial percentage of the population and, no doubt, the majority of the settlers, whatever the charges are that the government throws against him.
Those who have been carefully monitoring Mondoweiss are aware of the calls for murdering non-Jews who may threaten Israel that have been spurting from the throats and pens of leading orthodox and uberorthodox Israeli rabbis who have large followings in the Israeli military. Thus, to suggest that one of them would be likely to do in a US president in the name of God is not out of the question. One only needs to look what they have done to the Palestinians in his name.
Such a visit would be dangerous indeed. However, given the levels of control ardent Likudists (with connivance and support from the Christizios) in the US are able to exercise, what would actually be the consequences for Israel if a serious or even a successful attempt was made? Just what would the US do? And would it lead to any political convulsions in Israel? I really don’t think Obama can safely visit that place.
Believe me, apart from those Americans, T-Partiers and others who would be cheering, albeit in private, the effect here would be tremendous, not only in the African-American community but across the spectrum from center to left. There would be every effort made by the Israelis to point the finger at the Palestinians and failing that, to make the killer out to be a “lone madman,” acting on his own.

How is taking your case to the international community considered unilateral? Any dates set for the visit? It would obviously need to be near election time, if his goal is the “jewish vote”, but I think this is exaggerated. Obama doesn’t need to court it, it’s there for the taking.
Obama will get the majority of the Jewish vote but that it not as important as how big that majority is. In 2008, it was 78%. If it drops to 65% in Florida he loses and that may be true in Pennsylvania and New York. If he doesn’t go, it will certainly be made a campaign issue by the Republicans–in fact, it already has–almost all of the potential candidates having been there since Obama was elected.
One fundamental problem that the American people (and more so the rest of the world) have is that the American president is a mass murderer, and quite proud to be one. But because that is lost on Jeffrey, we are subjected to a meandering and bizarre post.

Get over your obsession with me, David, and gets some help and not only to write more clearly. What exactly is meant by that first statement? Do you really think that what Americans or the world think of Obama is relevant to the Israelis or whether or not he goes to Israel?
Despite the long list of things he has done to beef up Israel’ security, he has earned nothing but the hatred of a great many Israelis because (1) the overwhelming majority of them are racist to the core and (2) a powerful segment, inside and outside the government, is convinced that Obama threatens their goal of “Eretz Israel”? That’s all that counts for them. They feel they are entitled to all the goodies Washington throws Israel’s way.
If he does not do something that radically reverses the sentiments of that segment about him, there is no way that he can safely go to Israel, but even a wild outburst, not of gunfire but venom, from one of the many Judeo-Nazis in the Knesset, will present a major problem for both governments. Maybe you can think of something else he could do to win over the ugly mob and mobsters awaiting him on Israel’s shores but I can’t.

Re Pollard, it is only in recent years, as an Israeli version of the T-Party has come into power that Israel began seriously pressing for Pollard’s release because the prior governments, particularly Labor, were afraid of what he would say and who he would point fingers at were he to be released. This was also the position of the mainline American Jewish organizations because they, too, feared what Pollard would say if freed, given that he had developed a reputation as a “loose cannon” while in prison and was hurling all kinds of verbal accusations at the Israeli officials who he claimed betrayed him. Only the right wing Judeo-Nazi nutcases and the over-lapping settlers movement championed his cause and now they are the ones in charge in Jerusalem. Per force, the mainstream Jewish organizations which have also been moving rightward have changed their position and have made a major push to get Pollard freed, and they have enlisted the support of a number of liberal Democratic members of Congress including the “House Negro Caucus.”
Pollard, at the moment, appears to be very ill and not likely to go on the speaking engagements all over Israel as his supporters envisioned, but if there is a likelihood that he would be assassinated, and that likelihood is very real, I suspect it would come from Mossadniks connected to the old Labor Party who wouldn’t want Pollard running his mouth.
It would be done in the same fashion that Rudolph Kastner, the head of the Zionist organization in Hungary under the Nazis who had collaborated with Eichmann and become a favorite of the Ben-Gurion government following the war was bumped off the day after his police protection was withdrawn back in 1957. Kastner had been accused by an 86 year old holocaust survivor of having worked with the Nazis and having testified on behalf of SS General Kurt Becher at Nuremberg, thus saving Becher from hanging. First, of all, neither Brenner, Zertal, or Finkelstein, pose any threat to Israel, nor does any writer or political activist at this point (and if even I don’t know who Zertal is.) Second, Mossad has a long track record of killing Palestinians and Lebanese who are members of or are linked with groups that they consider to be threats to Israel (which some writers and historians may aspire to but have yet to qualify). They also have a nasty record of killing scientists who may be working on weapons that they believe may threaten Israel. Three Iranians in six weeks I believe fell into that category and were murdered by Israeli version of Murder Inc. Thirdly, and finally, I have not even remotely suggested that he Mossad would be involved in taking out Obama. Hell, he’s their latest prize calf.

While I very much doubt the truth of that first sentence, I will borrow those last two to say to same to you.
From my experience, which is considerably longer than his, it has been the David Greens throughout the movement who have diverted attention from the actions of the American Jewish establishment AKA The Lobby and allowed the latter to have an open playing field in spreading their propaganda and controlling US politics at every level.

Zunes and Chomsky and Green all condemn Israeli brutality in Lebanon. The implication is that the US is backing war criminals. I don’t think the Lobby sees this as helpful to their cause.
By correctly accusing the US of backing war criminals, the attention of the movement has been directed at Washington away from the organizations in the Jewish community that function at the local, state, and national level whose highest priority has been the protection of Israel and the US-Israel relationship.
Whatever problems Chomsky and Zunes, its stout defender, have presented to the Lobby,. they are barely visible and nothing compared to the vicious manner with which it greeted the works of Prof. Mearsheimer and Walt and Jimmy Carter who made no bones about the Lobby’s power.
All those, whatever their motives, who try to convince us that The Lobby is not the problem, that it is only serving to enforce the interests of the powers that be in Washington, are effectively providing “damage control” for The Lobby. P.S. As noted, the Mossad did not attempt to kill Hecht who was big supporter of Israel. That’s true but (1) most of those top US spooks are gone and (2) there was no national campaign or pressure from the major American Jewish organizations to do so. Moreover, Clinton was the darling of the American Jewish establishment, “the best president Israel ever had,” said the late Hyman Bookbinder, although he, too, came under attack when he urged Netanyahu (the same) to give up some more West Bank land.
The major difference now is that despite Obama having bent over backward to improve Israel’s military situation, he is hated by a major segment of the Israeli population that has grown in power since Clinton was president and the issue of his having been to Egypt and not to Israel since being elected continues to be a major topic among his critics in the American Jewish community at the same time the community has put pressure on the White House to release Pollard.
There is perhaps nothing more illustrative of Jewish power in the US than this situation in which the future of a US president may depend on whether or not he releases an American Jew who spied for Israel. Can one imagine the reaction in Israel and in the hard-line center of the American Jewish community if Pollard is not freed and he dies in prison?

The Washington Post did report, as did Ha’aretz, that two hours before the first plane hit, Israel’s Odigo messaging service received a report that an attack on the WTC would take place. Who was that message from, Yaweh?
Best I can tell from an internet search, the message to Odigo was from some anonymous source and had anti-semitic statements in it. How is this supposed to show anything?
The dancing Israeli thing doesn’t make any sense as part of an Israeli conspiracy–it makes more sense as showing the callousness of some idiots.
Donald, if you have a source that shows that the caller to Odigo made “anti-semitic statements,” please provide it. There was no mention of that in the Ha’aretz story.

Strange, if you are an American, that the presence of a moving company serving as a front for Mossad in the US does not seem to trouble you and make you wonder what they were doing over here that required setting up a phony moving company or how they might have known to be across the river with their camera, as they told Israeli TV, to “record” the event as it was taking place, and why the US press, outside of the Jewish Forward did not report it.

That’s a good question. While at the base there would be grumbling, at the top they would ask why it took Obama so long. If he’s not out soon, Pollard can expect a visit from Michelle Bachman.
