Rick Perry's speech on Israel this morning in NY. Twice uses the word "appeasement." Does not endorse a greater Israel, seems to want a 2ss under Oslo. Excerpt:
The Obama Administration’s Middle East policy of appeasement has encouraged such an ominous act of bad faith [statehood bid]....
Our muddle of a foreign policy has created greater uncertainty in the midst of the “Arab Spring.” And our policy of isolating and undermining Israel has only encouraged our adversaries in their aggression.
With the end-run on Palestinian statehood imminent before the U.N., America must act swiftly.
First, every nation within the U.N. must know America stands with Israel and the Oslo accord principle of direct negotiations without equivocation.
Second, America must make it clear that a declaration of Palestinian Statehood in violation of the spirit of the Oslo accords could jeopardize our funding of U.N. operations.
Third, the Palestinians must know their gambit comes with consequences in particular that America will have to reconsider the $4 billion in assistance we have provided to the Palestinians over the last 17 years.
Fourth, we should close the PLO office in Washington if the U.N. grants the standing of a Palestinian state.
And fifth, we must signal to the world, including nations like Turkey and Egypt whom we have considered allies in recent years, that we won’t tolerate aggression against Israel.
Israel is our friend and ally. I have traveled there several times, and met with its leaders. It is not a perfect nation, but its existence is critical to America’s security in the world.
It is time to change our policy of appeasement toward the Palestinians to strengthen our ties to the nation of Israel, and in the process establish a robust American position in the Middle East characterized by a new firmness and a new resolve.
If America does not head off the aggression of forces hostile to Israel we will only embolden them.
That would be a tragic mistake.

every nation within the u.n must know that america stands with israel?
as if they didn’t know this already?
he’s nothing but another traitorous israel firster
and, as such, same as bush/obama
a national security threat
Appeasement? And who’s the current Hitler? Abbas?
This won’t last. In Perry’s world view I bet Abbas will be replaced with Erdogan playing the role as Hitler within six months.
gotta love those neo cons, looking for hitler everywhere except within themselves…
we have met the enemy and he is us
Hitler of the month club. They’ll make Obama into a Hitler by the end of all this. Say he is linked to Hamas and Hezbollah charities and Iran by proxy with a bunch of suitcase nukes. Because that story never gets old.
appeasement – to bring to a state of peace…
clearly many folks aren’t interested in peace… this would define the neo con movement and the military and banking establishment seem quite alright with that! perry is one of them…
Pfui. Another bought-and-paid-for stooge.
“Bought and paid for”? Not at all. Perry has little support among Jews or among those Christians who seriously focus on Israel (as opposed to using it, as does Perry, as a talking point). Perry may well be dreaming that some mythical Jewish money will flow his way, but this speech is really just part of his drive to the hard right and demonizing Obama in every way for the Republican primary voters.
Rick has to provide us with some ‘tough talk’, since it’s been exposed that he is a closet democrat, working for Al Gore. But his vocal defense of Israel seems to solidify his democratic credentials as he attempts to placate and appease the Lobby. The problem is that Likud is no friend of America, and Rick or Romney, or Bachman the kibbutzer, need to check this reality with their ascent to power.
Off the international spectrum of sane behavior…
AMY GOODMAN: I wanted to wrap for a minute by asking you two quick questions. One is about politics in this country. Do you see a big difference between Obama, Mitt Romney, Rick Perry? Do you think there would be a drastic change in policy if a Republican were to win in 2012 and if it were Perry or Romney?
NOAM CHOMSKY: Well, I must say that politics in this country now is in a state that I think has no analogue in American history and maybe nowhere in any parliamentary system. It’s astonishing. I mean, I’m not a great enthusiast for Obama, as you know, from way back, but at least he’s somewhere in the real world. Perry, who’s very likely—very likely to get the—to win the primary and win the nomination, and maybe to win the election, he’s often in outer space. I mean, his views are unbelievable. Bachmann is the same. Romney is kind of more or less toward the center. These are—the positions that they are taking are utterly outlandish.
I mean, as you mentioned before, I just came back from Europe, where people just can’t believe what they’re seeing here, what people are saying. I mean, take one of the really crucial issues for the human species: doing something about environmental catastrophe. Well, you know, every single one of the Republican candidates—maybe not Huntsman, but every major one—is a climate change denier. It’s kind of ironic in the case of Perry. He says there’s no global warming, while Texas is burning up with the highest temperatures on record, fire all over the place, and so on. But it doesn’t matter, it’s just not happening. In fact, the one who has conceded that maybe global warming has taken place is Michele Bachmann. I heard a statement of hers in which she said, “Well, yes, maybe it’s happening. It’s God’s punishment for allowing gay marriage,” or some comment like that. I mean, this—what’s going on there is just off the international spectrum of sane behavior.
Weimar Republicans?
If Obama is Chamberlain, that means Abbas is Hitler and that, in turn, means it’s time to “Remember the Holocaust!”
But Abbas can’t be Hitler because, as we all know, Saddam…I mean, Ahmadinejad is already Hitler.
Those Israelis sure do – rather perversely – love their Hitlers.
After this speech, and the ‘obama no friend of israel’ billboards in new York, and the election in Brooklyn that was all about Israel, you have to wonder if Obama sometimes thinks, “I might as well just go ahead and recognize Palestine, the Zionists are going to think i’m anti-israel whatever i do.”
One would hope. A SC veto won’t win back the “Jewish Vote” .. Obama would have to set his sights much, much higher. For starters, an attack on Iran. An attack on Iran and a SC veto on Palestinian statehood might win them back. An attack on Iran AND Syria would definitely win them back. Throw in a sly remark about Norway deserving the attack because of rampant antisemitism and embracing “Islamofacism” and give interviews to journalists like Caroline Glick and suck up to them and maybe Congress will give him nearly as many standing ovations as Netanyahu got.

Following up on Philip’s
Obama’s policy is appeasement, appeasement of Israel.
I agree lysias. I think this will be Obama’s legacy in the long term, and history will not be kind to him. He will be viewed as the Uncle Tom president, who appeased apartheid Israel and their [upcoming] atrocities, all through the arab spring.
I would keep grilling Perry on his signal failure: badly organized public prayers for rain. I am not an expert, but one can judge the end results: still no rain. He can no more deliver security to our friends in the Middle East than he could deliver rain to his state.
No, that’s pointless. They have 1001 answers: The Lord works in mysterious ways, we must pray harder, we must lacerate our flesh while we pray, it will rain eventually, we’re too sinful etc.
1001 cheap excuses. The real problem is that various methods of getting rain are mutually exclusive. I would need to find the link, but some Texan magazine interview a number of clerics.
Jewish rabbi claimed that it is a sin to pray for a miracle. Traditional Jewish prayers for rain are during Sukkot, just before the rainy season. At other times it is recommended to check weather predictions first. If you pray for rain when the chance of rain is 10% or less, you just offend the Lord and next time He will stay miffed.
Hare Krishna has a very nice goddess that can send rain, but the prayers have to be submitted by vegetarians. And please, beef barbecue? Forget about the rain.
Tlaloc is a rain specialist, but requires human sacrifices. Texas with it ample death row could try it.
Mayan methods allow to avoid human sacrifice. You start with a sacred ball game, then king/governor perforates his penis with obsidian knife and enters vision trance…
piotr I like Alexander Cockburn’s take on those rain prayers. Not quoting: God didn’t work on that part of the problem, He was too busy hurling fire and brimstone into West Texas to get to that.
what a god awful video. he’s disgusting.
I haven’t seen it and I damn well ain’t going to neither!
From the single freeze-frame above, I can tell it’s disgusting regurgitated ziorobot garbage!
“Israel is our oldest and strongest ally in the Middle East ”
(Wrong. Saudi is)
Anyway they really believe that in Israel. They really believe the US will never abandon themem. It will be incomprehensible when the US starts the shafting.
Chris Matthews just had a segment on this. Chris showed how he is going to spin Obama’s veto of the Palestinian statehood initiative. He said (paraphrasing a bit) that Obama would do what any American President would do and would show the courage needed to stand up to all the Arabs who will burn him in effigy. That’s right, folks– in Chris’s eyes Obama and America aren’t caving to the Lobby. Obama is showing courage by standing up against all those Arabs who will hate him for this.
Chris also avoided saying anything about the fanatical rightwing Jewish support for Israeli intransigence–he saved all of his harsh words for the Christian right. It was Chris’s guests who pointed out that Perry might also be trying to peel away the rich Jewish donors–at which point Chris came in and gingerly suggested that those rich donors might also be upset over Obama’s criticism of Wall Street. His guests (one of them the author of the New York magazine article Phil linked the other day) agreed with him on that.
But you have to admire the sheer sleaziness of Matthews in portraying Obama’s stance in the UN as courageous. It takes the sort of mindset that works in politics for a long period of time to even think of something like that. Maybe after a while you can’t even tell truth from falsehood–you just start believing whatever is convenient for your cause.
lol, who’s appeasing whom?
from Robert Fisk
“The game is lost. America’s political power in the Middle East will this week be neutered on behalf of Israel. Quite a sacrifice in the name of liberty…”
link to commondreams.org
Frankly, a good thing. The less effective our voice becomes in the ME, the more the chance for the natives to carve their own future.
Fisk is so clued in.
“not just a page turning, but the failure of empire. So locked into Israel has US foreign policy become, so fearful of Israel have almost all its Congressmen and Congresswomen become – to the extent of loving Israel more than America – that America will this week stand out not as the nation that produced Woodrow Wilson and his 14 principles of self-determination, not as the country which fought Nazism and Fascism and Japanese militarism, not as the beacon of freedom which, we are told, its Founding Fathers represented – but as a curmudgeonly, selfish, frightened state whose President, after promising a new affection for the Muslim world, is forced to support an occupying power against a people who only ask for statehood.”
Of course he has seen it all. He was in Sabra and Shatila too. The great unwinding was just a matter of time.
Hey we now finally have the list of congressional APPEASERS of Apartheid israel – the ones who rushed off to tel aviv beaches this summer and came back with a zionist tan:
link to legistorm.com
Take a good look at who in your state is listed, email/write to them and warn them that you will not be voting for them while they’re associating with an Apartheid system, which in fact is against the laws of our land. Threaten them that if they have a relationship with that foreign agency aipac, you will not only NOT vote for them, but you will work your darnest AGAINST them.
Open the floodgates people – ya YOU out there! Well who else is gonna do it huh?! eee? Hophnim? That Richard guy?!

TAXI SAYS: Thanks agelbert! You did your country proud!
Never forget that the word ‘appeasement’ was first used by Churchill and others not to refer to Hitler but to Gandhi. Only after the term had been used to deride the legitimate aspirations of Indian nationalists was it used to refer to the situation in Europe.
