Foxman says Google and Facebook are on his team to combat ‘internet hate’

From Maidhc O Cathail's site The Passionate Attachment:

In a May 10 press release, the staunchly pro-Israel Anti-Defamation League (ADL) announced it “will convene a new working group on cyberhate that will bring together Internet industry leaders and others to probe the roots of the problem and develop new solutions to address it head-on.”

According to the ADL statement, the establishment of a “Anti-Cyberhate Working Group” was approved by the Task Force on Internet Hate at a May 7 meeting held at the Stanford Center for Internet and Society in Palo Alto, California. The task force was created by the Inter-parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism (ICCA).

[From the ADL press release

[The ICCA resolution was prompted by a desire of industry leaders, including Google and Facebook, to maintain a continuing dialogue with nongovernment organizations on best practices on combating Internet hate and to promote transparency on how online hate is addressed.

[The ICCA Task Force on Internet Hate includes members of parliaments from around the world, Internet experts, scholars and representatives of Internet companies, including Facebook and Google.]

The ICCA Task Force is co-chaired by Yuli Edelstein, Israel’s Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs, who is charged with countering antisemitism. A member of Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party, Edelstein lives in the illegal West Bank settlement of Neve Daniel, which he sees as part of “Greater Israel.” As far as the Israeli minister is concerned, however, those who dare to nonviolently oppose Israel’s ongoing colonization of Palestinian land are motivated only by hate. According a report in The Electronic Intifada on Edelstein’s anti-Arab racism, he told delegates at a 2009 international conference on “combating antisemitism”:

We must repeat again and again these basic facts – TO BE ‘anti-Israel’ IS TO BE ANTI-SEMITIC. TO BOYCOTT ISRAEL, ISRAELI PROFESSORS and ISRAELI businesses, these are not political acts, these are acts of hate, acts of anti-Semitism! Anti-Israel hysteria is anti-Semitic hysteria. They are one and the same. [Ed: Upper case letters in the transcript]

I like Foxman’s approach, and am going to start using it in my daily dealings with others. If I do something to hurt or offend someone else and am called on it, I’m going to call them a hater and brush that hate right off my shoulders!

  2. pabelmont says:

New lessons in how governments around the world are manipulated in the service (it seems) of Zionism generally and Greater-Israel-Project-Zionism in particular (since most anti-Israel communication responds to the occupation and settlements and land-grabs of the Greater-Israel-Project). And I (silly me!) thought the world’s apparent indifference was all due to the machinations (of which I assume there are plenty) of the G-USA.

  3. kill the messenger, kill the internet

      Annie,

Is the messenger guilty of CYBERHATE? Is the internet only filled with CYBERHATE? Certainly this site would not want to be associated with spreading hatred towards any specific group of people(s) Palestinian or Jews. There are laws that govern the use of free speech and what amounts to Libel or defamation, these are Legal Concepts and can’t be entered into without evidence, on some subjective whim, by any other group. Maintaining personal freedom also implies taking personal responsibility for our views and our actions. Nothing wrong with that equation because it applies to all.

“these are Legal Concepts and can’t be entered into without evidence, on some subjective whim, by any other group. Maintaining personal freedom also implies taking personal responsibility for our views and our actions. Nothing wrong with that equation because it applies to all.”

Of course they can, and often that’s what happens – ala’ Foxman. Your final comment isnt’ true either – it doesn’t apply to all – it applies to those with the fiancial means to force others to accept responsibility for actions that those with financial backing will deem irresponsible and/or illegal. It’s simply false that personal freedom – and the ‘responsiblity’ that goes with it – applies to all. It clearly doesn’t.

“Is the messenger guilty of CYBERHATE? Is the internet only filled with CYBERHATE?”

Who put you in charge of deciding what thoughts are proper for someone to think or express? Who put Google or Facebook or that fat bigot, Foxman?

  4. American says:

Good luck with that……they’d have to shut down the entire net. Let google and facebook and whoever censor and all it will produce is competitors who will take their place.

  5. seafoid says:

I note from the letters to the Irish times and the guardian that the only people who write letters in favour of Israel today are Jews.
There are only 14 million of them in the world. They had authority for long enough but they can no longer control the narrative.

Google “Israeli apartheid” – 7 million hits
That’s one hit for every 2 Jews there are.

  6. seanmcbride says:

This report is disturbing. Can we trust Google and Facebook (and other major Internet and telecommunications companies) with our private data? To what degree might pro-Israel activists and militants at those companies be motivated to cooperate with intel agencies like Mossad to abuse that data?

I once had a member of the JIDF (Jewish Internet Defense Force) — a Kahanist group which boasts more than 50,000 followers on Twitter — boast to me that he had access to all my news tracking accounts (including Google News Alerts) on the Internet. He was especially upset that “Mossad” was one of the news topics I was following (along with other intel-related topics having nothing to do with Israel). The implied threat seemed to be, stop paying any attention to Mossad or else.

How involved are Mark Zuckerberg, Sergey Brin and Larry Page with Israeli politics? Are they “patriotic” on the subject? These are reasonable questions to think about in light of what the world already knows about Mossad activities in the Diaspora and its exploitation of sayanim.

Make no mistake: the Israeli government, with the help of insiders, “friends” and fellow true believers, would love to get its hands on all the personal and private data concerning Mondoweiss founders, funders, managers, authors, commenters, etc. held by Google, Facebook, Twitter, AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, etc. They might even be tempted to use that data to run ops against “the enemies of Israel.” That’s how they roll — strike out at and crush Amalek everywhere in the world. For many pro-Israel militants (especially religious Zionists), if you question Israeli government policies or challenge the Israel lobby, you are Amalek.

    • MHughes976 says:

‘They’d love to do this’ – surely they’ve done it long since?

      • seanmcbride says:

        MHughes976,

        You said:

“‘They’d love to do this’ – surely they’ve done it long since?”

It’s safe to assume that Israel has had access to many or even all of the most sensitive databases of personal data in the United States for decades now. At the moment, Google and Facebook would certainly be prime targets for data mining.

Israel doesn’t need to hack into these systems — it has many “warm” friends inside all the major American Internet and telecommunications companies who would be eager to help it out in its never-ending battles against Amalek — that is, against anyone who gets in the way of the expansionist, militaristic and messianic schemes of the Israeli government.

        • seafoid says:

I just think it’s far too much work. Zionism doesn’t have enough people to turn the news around. The Chinese Communist party is struggling, FFS. Zionism is like a court intrigue- it doesn’t have enough peasants to make a real long term difference. There just aren’t enough Jews to pull it off. If anything the last 60 or so years were an aberration. Jews have never had much civilian power because they have never had the numbers. It’s no coincidence that once they lost Israel they lost it for a very long time.

        • MHughes976 says:

Yes, I meant that I couldn’t imagine any significant legal or technical obstacle. We know that Rupert Murdoch’s henchpersons in the UK can find out all sorts of things. Perhaps some of us are Amalekite flies, directed no doubt by Beelzebub, but hardly worth the swatting. But you never know!

        • seafoid says:

For every Ziobot required to scan the news there is one less Ziobot to generate money for the Israeli economy. There is zero economic value in trying to hold back the tide.

Not even AIPAC can change the laws of economics.

    • Can we trust Google and Facebook (and other major Internet and telecommunications companies) with our private data?

The short answer is no. However, your choices are limited.

Without realizing it, we are already entrusting them with way too much data, and it is getting exponentially worse. The most recent deluge comes from the prevalence of “clouds” that allow 5GB or more of free data storage, some of them even backup your data from your laptop or mobile phone with no intervention from you. The convenience is fabulous, but the exposure is frightening.

Of course, you can cut yourself off from the Internet by disposing off your cell phone, computer, credit cards, etc., but this is hardly practical in today’s world. You wouldn’t be reading this article if you did, for one thing.

There are some steps you can take to limit this, although this isn’t comprehensive by a long shot:

      - Don’t store data in the “cloud”. Get your own disk drives and use them for backup. If you want the convenience of remote access, set up your own secure server. This is quite easy on Linux.

      - If you are going to store data on the cloud, encrypt it first. There are several free tools available to do this. If you are a Linux user, use the openssl tools and choose one of the stronger encryptions.

      - Don’t download “free apps” to your smart phone unless you know whether or not they are collecting personal data. There are tools to “snoop” on Internet traffic to see what they are sending and where.

-Don’t allow apps to advertise the location of the phone. Of course, this disables the ability to retrieve a stolen phone, but it also prevents someone from tracking your location.

      - Google, Facebook, et. al. store the IP address of wherever you are connected from and also whatever web sites that you are going to. You can disrupt these by using anonymizing web browsers or IP obfuscators like tor.

      - Mail servers like GMAIL store all your emails, both the ones you send and the ones you receive. You can set up your own mail server and Mail Transport Agent (MTA) on Linux with qmail

      - All your cell phone bills are handled in Israel by companies like Amdocs, so someone knows whom you call or calls you, and they can also listen to what you say.

Unfortunately, even with all this, all your Internet traffic goes through your ISP, which provides a perfect choke point for the bad guys to monitor you.

So, short of living in a cave, the brave new world is upon us already.

Seanmcbride, may I call you Sean?

Are you saying that Israel poses an existential threat towards… everyone?

Israel was recently criticized as adopting a viewpoint that “others” posed an existential threat towards them. That Iran did not state they wanted to wipe Israel of the map but rather; the pages of time, and further quoting Khomeini, that Israel was a Cancer and other warm, fuzzy, sentiments.

Sean, you sound like a conspiracy theorist. Let me respond to your overall concept that “all the Jews are in this together” I’m offended you didn’t mention Spielberg or Jerry Seinfeld in the mix. One directs what you watch in Movies and the other invaded North American culture trying to tell us what was funny for about 10 years.

Have you even considered that Adam and Philip may be on the inside of the Palestinian Movement but actually giving intel to Israel about all the negative publicity on this site, all the Palestinian “news sources”, journalists, activists, etc?
Why not? Is that irrational? After all, it is my source that they are (whisper) “Jews”.
I’m sure you have done stellar research and have newspaper clippings on the wall with lines drawn connecting all the Jews working in agreement towards the cause of “zionism.”

Here is my rebuttal. Take three Jews and put them in the same room and ask them to define what “zionism” is. Come back in an hour. You will find that they have come up with at least 5 or 6 different definitions in that time but the three of them do not agree that one definition accurately describes “zionism.”

The United States owes Gazillions of dollars not to a Jewish bank but to the Chinese Government. That is the Bank that holds the mortgage on your future, hopefully they never foreclose. The article was about dealing with “Cyber hate” there are laws that exist that make a distinction between freedom of speech and an abuse of freedom of speech. If this site doesn’t reflect inspiring hatred towards a specific group of people, race, creed, colour, etc It should be fine.

Have you ever heard the term Judahphobia? Probably not, I just made it up and you know why you haven’t heard that term? Just say it; “Ju dah phobia” why not? We have homo-phobia, Islam a phobia, so why not fear the JEWS?

I even read a book, (well several books) where there was a claim that; “Jewish Insiders” were one of the first nations to be Monotheistic, they believed in One GOD and they claimed further that HE chose them to be HIS People. Of course if you read further, you will find that GOD is not always pleased with HIS chosen, they are His Children and He disciplines them for their behaviour because He loves them. BUT still, if GOD is on their side, who cares about Zuckerberg?

Please, Sean, open the blinds on the window, let some sun shine in or better yet go for a walk outside. It’s Mother’s Day, get some fresh air even if it’s just to show yourself that Israel is not controlling your every move.

        1. Far from being a “conspiracy theorist,” I am a fairly skilled debunker of false conspiracy theories.

        2. I never said that “all the Jews are in this together” and I emphatically don’t believe that. In fact, I think that many Jews are the world’s most formidable critics of the Israeli government and of Zionism.

You’re getting off on the wrong foot.

I have said that many Jewish nationalists and Likud Zionists falsely claim to speak for “the Jews” and “the Jewish people” — which they regard as a mystical ethnic collective — and that is a fact. Would you care to dispute that fateful fact on factual and reasonable grounds?

        1. How do you define Zionism?

        2. Broadly speaking, Zionism can be defined in four ways as:

        a. Jewish ethnic nationalism
        b Jewish religious nationalism
        c. Jewish secular nationalism
        d. Jewish ethno-religious nationalism

But all Jewish Zionists are Jewish nationalists in the ethnic sense — in precisely the same way that white and black nationalists are nationalist in the ethnic sense.

The best way to define Zionism in a precise and detailed way is by describing and analyzing the particular ideological beliefs and policies of the Zionist establishment — the Israeli government and the Israel lobby. The Zionist establishment presents Zionism’s face to the world.

    UPDATE

Since this post was first published, Israeli blogger Yossi Gurvitz has covered MK Edelstein’s remarks for +972 (note that the word I put as ‘damaged’, Gurvitz translates as ‘deplorable’, i.e. Edelstein describes Arabs as a “deplorable nation”). Gurvitz sought clarification with the following result:

I phoned the minister’s office for comment, and asked his spokesman: “Are you aware of the fact there are some 80 million Arabs in the world, from Sudan to Syria?” He replied: “Yes, there are – and the minister meant them all.”

    • American says:

There might be 80 million Arabs but there are 1.3 billion Muslims in the world according to the World Census..lets see now, 1.3 billion Muslims vr 12 million Jews..humm,, you would think they would pay attention to these numbers.

    • Samuel T says:

Does his spokesman have a name, perchance? Not that I am doubting that a blogger of such world renown authority could have access to the Minister’s Office, surely, we all do. It’s the idiotic statement that this “spokesman” is reported to have made, that if he in fact made, is his own and can not be attributed to the minister.

If you have a comment from a source in Government, quote your source, otherwise it’s credibility is certainly suspect. If you printed his name, and this source maintained this position, I’m quite sure he would be in the ranks of the unemployed.

Also, are (We) attempting to translate a language? That creates all sorts of problems, especially if you did not “hear” the pronunciation OR if perhaps, you don’t even speak the language. I’m just saying…

Perhaps the Minister is referring to the extreme wealth of certain members of the Arab Emirates and the extreme poverty and affliction experienced by other Arab peoples. All that Money from OIL and yet the Palestinians are unsupported by their own extended family.

  8. seanmcbride says:

What’s going on here is that the Israel lobby is casting about for opportunities to acquire authoritarian editorial control over the Internet. The Internet, which values free speech, independent thinking and truth-telling, terrifies the lobby. The lobby longs to restore the good old days in which American political discourse was dominated by a few large corporations that were completely under its control.

If the ADL were truly concerned about “hate speech,” it would be turning its full attention to condemning and effectively opposing the torrents of hate speech flowing every day from pro-Israel militants like Pamela Geller, David Horowitz, Geert Wilders and any number of Israeli political and religious leaders who are speaking in the name of Judaism, the Jewish people, Jewish values, etc.

    • tokyobk says:

      Hi Seanmcbride,

Here the ADL condemns all three from their extremist watch site.

      link to accessadl.blogspot.com

“In the last several years, Wilders has been embraced by U.S.-based anti-Muslim bigots like Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer, and has served as the keynote speaker at demonstrations organized by Stop Islamization of America (SIOA), an organization led by Geller and Spencer that promotes a conspiratorial anti-Muslim agenda under the guise of fighting radical Islam. ”

So, is there a chance you sometimes leap on assumption rather than conclude on confirmation?

      • American says:

ADL speaks out of both sides of it’s mouth…every now and then it throw a bone to the ‘others’ for appearances sake…. but 99.5% of what it does vilify Jewish ‘enemies’.

      • seanmcbride says:

        tokyobk,

I understand that the ADL has condemned Islamophobia. The main question is, how much energy and attention has the ADL directed against Jewish extremists compared to anti-Jewish extremists? My impression is, very little as measured by the frequency with which the ADL addresses these issues respectively. And I am doubtful that the ADL truly understands what are the differences between Judeophobia and principled criticism of Israel and Zionism.

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. and Fox News continue to provide a platform for anti-Muslim extremists and haters like Pamela Geller. Why hasn’t the ADL aggressively gone after Murdoch and News Corp. for this pro-hate editorial policy?

Best guess: the ADL considers Rupert Murdoch, who is a pro-Israel militant and Likud Zionist, to be an important ally of the Israeli government and the Israel lobby. The ADL is largely a propaganda arm of and ideological enforcer for the Israeli government.

      • tokyobk, i noticed it was only after the massacre in norway adl referenced geller and spencer as bigots. just a few months before this was published.

        link to adl.org

note, although they described them as promoting ‘conspiratorial anti-Muslim agenda under the guise of fighting radical Islam’ as well as “vilifying the Islamic faith and asserting the existence of an Islamic conspiracy to destroy “American” values ” they did not actually condemn them.

Geller and Spencer work closely with David Yerushalmi, an Arizona attorney with a record of anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant and anti-black bigotry. Yerushalmi is one of the driving forces behind Shari’a-related conspiracy theories and growing efforts to ban or restrict the use of Shari’a law in American courts. Geller and Spencer head the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), a non-profit organization that was incorporated by Yerushalmi. AFDI and SIOA organize most of their activities and initiatives together, and AFDI serves as host through which Geller and Robert Spencer publish their blogs.

note the difference between the way adl references the aryan nation as a “hate group” and “hate movement” twice in the opening paragraph.

        link to adl.org

but i do applaud them for finally referencing geller and spencer as bigots on the blog post. same with ACT! for America

        link to adl.org

ACT! for America is an organization dedicated to combating what it describes as “the threat of radical Islam” to the safety of Americans and to democracy. ACT! promotes the idea that Islam is a backward and seditious political ideology and that Muslim immigration to the U.S. must end.
        …..

Gabriel claims that 20 percent of all Muslims support a radical form of Islam that justifies suicide terrorism and works for the establishment of a global totalitarian Islamic state. She further claims that “tens of thousands of Islamic militants now reside in America operating in sleeper cells, attending our colleges and universities, even infiltrating our government.”

Gabriel’s views are in line with a growing field of groups that use community concerns about Islamic extremism to stoke fear toward the Muslim community at large. Among other groups that promote an extreme anti-Muslim agenda are Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) and the Society of Americans for National Existence (SANE).

ACT!’s advocacy is focused on combating what it perceives as “Islamofascism” or “cultural Jihad,” and on countering what it describes as a culture of “festering political correctness.” ACT! argues that there is a “rising tide of Islamofascism in our midst” and that it is “political correctness that is aiding its advance.”

note the lack of condemnation? no reference to ‘hate group’. there is a difference between identifying a group as promoting “the idea that Islam is a backward and seditious political ideology and that Muslim immigration to the U.S. must end” and identifying that as wrong. note Edelstein’s words about ‘the deplorable arab nation’ as pretty much in line with “backward and seditious political ideology”.

just thought i would point that out.

also, not to belabor the point, but the adl is convening a working group on cyberhate in conjunction with a task force created by a group whose steering committee includes a known islamophobe (Edelstein) .

        doesn’t that seem odd?

        tokyobk,

On what consistent logical and ethical grounds does it make sense for anyone (including the ADL) simultaneously to be an aggressive proponent of Jewish ethnic nationalism and an aggressive opponent of ethnic nationalism for other groups?

I’ve posed this question to pro-Israel activists dozens of times in the last few months and have been met with a dead silence. Not a single one uttered a word in response.

From which I conclude that this kind of political behavior makes no sense at all. It is not a defensible position for reasonable people.

In October of 2005, Foxman addressed a classroom of Jewish students at New York University. Young heads nodded and brows furrowed as Foxman riled them with his customary rhetoric: Isn’t it antisemitic for pro-Palestinian groups to seek divestment only from Israel, ignoring the far greater crimes of regimes like Sudan or North Korea? How do we describe this sort of selective flagellation of the world’s only Jewish state, if not as antisemitism?
“What if the campus Free Tibet club campaigned for divestment from China? Would that be anti-Chinese bigotry?” asked Asaf Shtull-Trauring, a 20-year-old student and conscientious objector from the Israeli army.
    Of course not, answered Foxman
, but it was preposterous to compare the two conflicts, what with the Jews’ experience of two millennia of murderous persecution. Shtull-Trauring responded with two questions: Did Foxman mean that selective treatment is okay so long as it’s not directed at Jews? And where did the Anti-Defamation League get off telling Jewish university students which opinions about Israel were acceptable and which verboten?
The dialogue spiraled into a confrontation. Shtull-Trauring says Foxman, frustrated and under attack, placed his cards on the table, angrily retorting: “I don’t represent you nor the Jewish community! I represent the donors.”
Foxman’s outburst was surprising not because of its content, but because of its candor. Foxman needn’t bother himself with the trifling concerns of American Jews who happen not to be multimillionaire philanthropists. If he makes the Jewish community less appealing to young Jews, if his theatrics turn us off and turn us away, that’s all beside the point. Foxman’s job is to keep the millionaire benefactors happy: the rest of us can go jump in the Kinneret.
Without a meaningful mission to pursue, the ADL has resorted to scaremongering to fill its coffers and justify its existence
. These efforts have grown increasingly bizarre and damaging…

    On the data theft front:

But small potatoes compared to what is going on at higher levels — barely a blip on the screen. Unit 8200 and Mossad may be capable of data mining six ways to Sunday the aggregate collection of most American contact lists, Google searches, email messages, text messages, telephone calls, Web visits, credit card purchases, etc.

I think the internet is in the process of killing Zionism as an ideology. They don’t get it in Israel yet because they are living in a bubble mediated by Hebrew, a language that cuts them off from the world. I would love to be a fly on the wall at the meetings of the top Zionist boxwallas in England and France to see how the media effort is going.

A very interesting experiment- go to youtube and type “Israel” in the search space and see how many Israel-positive videos result

The search for “Zionism” is even worse.

Israel the brand is slowly toxifying.

  15. This meddling is the main reason why i see a blowback of epic proportions for this clan…historically it aint ever been pretty, historically they have also been the scapegoats, and if their meddling in the politics of the u.s is any indication of what has occurred in the past then there is no reason to expect anything different. The americans will not like what they find in the ashes of their crumbling empire, namely the fingerprints left behind at the scene of the crime and someone will be scapegoated.

Right now its all the muslim terrorist fault for everything, but that story can’t hold water for much longer even among the most misinformed.

The Foxman’s, and the Joe Lieberman congressman types of the world will never back down, they just charge forward always believing they are doing God’s work and thinking that they can fool everyman all the time, but being out of touch with reality they miss the signs warning of the coming storm.

History is a guide for many things why not this thing also?

Can there be any doubt that Edelstein and Foxman will be leveraging the loyalty angle with Zuckerberg and Brin? This includes a veiled threat: “You know, it would be a shame if it somehow got out that you guys are self hating Jews.” Brin will be put to the test against his own words, “knowledge is always good, and certainly always better than ignorance”, and against Google’s motto “Don’t be evil”

    • seanmcbride says:

Wouldn’t you think that Sergey Brin, Larry Page and Mark Zuckerberg would go to extaordinary lengths to squash any suspicion that Google and Facebook are being manipulated or infiltrated by the Israeli government and the Israel lobby? Especially taking into consideration the sensitivity of the personal data that those companies control, the sinister track record of Mossad, and the hostility towards free speech and open debate that has been expressed by many pro-Israel activists over the years?

Yes, that makes sense but ethnic/religeous loyalties are powerful things that often make no sense at all. We’ll see.

Not if you believe ‘plucky, little’ Israel is surrounded by a ‘sea of Muslim hate’; and that most of the world is antisemtic. Then you are a heroic do-gooder saving Jews from a sick and dangerous world…
