Security officers at Boston’s Logan International Airport have come under fire for the widespread racial profiling of Arabs, Muslims, Blacks and Hispanics in their zeal to ferret out terrorists.
The New York Times broke the story over the weekend after officers who requested anonymity came forward; some officers have complained internally to the Transportation Security Agency as well. A Massachusetts lawmaker has called for congressional hearings on the racial profiling allegations.
The Times reports that officers estimated that “80 percent” of passengers “searched during certain shifts” were people of color. What’s more, the Boston airport “is the testing ground for an expanded use of behavioral detection methods at airports around the country.”
But what’s not touched on in the Times report is the fact that Logan International’s security procedures are modeled on Israel’s policies at their own airport–policies that are blatantly racist.
Here’s more from the New York Times:
More than 30 federal officers in an airport program intended to spot telltale mannerisms of potential terrorists say the operation has become a magnet for racial profiling, targeting not only Middle Easterners but also blacks, Hispanics and other minorities.
In interviews and internal complaints, officers from the Transportation Security Administration’s “behavior detection” program at Logan International Airport in Boston asserted that passengers who fit certain profiles — Hispanics traveling to Miami, for instance, or blacks wearing baseball caps backward — are much more likely to be stopped, searched and questioned for “suspicious” behavior.
The Israel connection is integral to understanding Boston’s racial profiling problems. In 2009, according to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Jerusalem Post reported that “Boston’s Logan Airport has tapped the Israeli company New Age Security Solutions to help secure the facility using Behavior Pattern Recognition.”
Even before 2009, the head of New Age Security Solutions was “consulting” with Logan International, according to NPR. In an interview, Rafi Ron, the head of the Israeli company and the former head of security at Ben-Gurion Airport, insisted that Israel does not “racially profile.” But Ron said that Israel uses “profiling that takes into consideration where somebody comes from, and if somebody’s home address is Gaza, we should be paying more attention to details.” (Ron also said in a more recent interview on Boston’s NPR station that “targeting minorities” is not a good idea.)
It took until August 2011 for the Israeli-inspired model to be operationalized. That was the date when the “behavioral profiling” became an official model at Boston’s airport–and this was “a direct result” of “Israeli influence” on security procedures at the airport, according to the Associated Press.
Fast-forward to the New York Times story. The Times reports that one anonymous TSA officer complained that this “behavior detection program is no longer a behavior-based program, but [rather] a racial profiling program.”
To observers of how Israeli security works at Ben Gurion Airport, the allegations of racial profiling will come as no surprise. Palestinian and Arab travelers at Ben Gurion are guaranteed to be harassed by Israeli security.
According to the Association of Civil Rights in Israel, “all Arab citizens of Israel are automatically categorized as a ‘security threat’ for the purpose of airport security checks…Arab passengers receive a discriminatory and humiliating treatment in airports, including a special and thorough search that extremely exceeds the usual security checks, only because the passenger is Arab and with no other concrete basis for suspicion.”
Darryl Li, a Harvard University graduate student at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, was not surprised at the revelations published by the New York Times. Li himself has been questioned extensively at Logan International, and while it was not due to his race, it was due to his travels to the Middle East.
“Over the past two years I have been subjected to additional interrogation by [Customs and Border Protection] every time I have entered the US at Logan. This has generally been triggered by visa stamps I have in my passport from Yemen, a country which I last visited in 2006 as a fellow at the American Institute for Yemeni Studies (which is supported by the US Departments of State and Education),” Li wrote in an email. “The scope of questioning goes far beyond routine matters of ascertaining my citizenship, searching for contraband, or inquiring about the nature of my trip. Instead, it seems that CBP has taken on an entirely new mandate of open-ended domestic intelligence gathering.”
The influence of Israeli-style security tactics extends far beyond Logan, as Max Blumenthal documented in this report, though the US has its own racial profiling problems separate from Israel’s. For example, after the failed attempt in 2010 to bomb an airliner on Christmas Day by a Nigerian-born member of Yemen’s Al Qaeda branch, the Obama administration announced that travelers from 14 countries would be subject to additional security screening. The countries were largely Muslim-majority ones. The administration dropped the program three months after it was implemented.
“Some in this country continue to hold a strange fascination with Israel as a ‘model’ for how to do coercion right,” said Li. “I prefer to think of it as a model for what to avoid.”

my kids just came back through logan after a visit to relatives in miami. no sign that the blue-eyed cherubs were singled out for ‘special’ treatment. i noticed, though, that there is a significant number of minorities working what appear to be the lower levels of security. i wonder if anyone has information if there are any rifts between ‘minority’ employees and non-minority employees in the application of the security program.
i particularly like this part. just goes to show how brilliant and creative ‘israeli’-style profiling is.
The TSA officers who lodged the complaints told the Times that passengers who matched a certain description — blacks wearing backward baseball caps, or Hispanics going to Miami, for example — were more likely to be questioned.
they/we paid an israeli security firm to come up with this genius plan? what no mention of ‘turbans’ as a cue for extra scrutiny? (when i was returning from russia a few years ago, the customs agent was flabbergasted that i could possibly be interested in visiting ‘that country’, still stuck in the patriot/commie dichotomy of the past. as if profiling is anything but a fig leaf for subjective prejudices.)
The administration dropped the program three months after it was implemented.
the dog chasing its tail constitutes a security plan? this is depressing, for so many reasons, the least of which is the utter incompetence of the experts.
“Some in this country continue to hold a strange fascination with Israel as a ‘model’ for how to do coercion right,” said Li. “I prefer to think of it as a model for what to avoid.”
oh those pesky, inscrutible asians. they always were jealous of the israeli intellect, so naturally suited for 21st-century police state tactics. but to be so brazen with their prejudices.
Its not just modeling Israeli security procedures, pre-TSA, much of the security in US airports (and European ones) were/are provided by Israel-linked security companies. In fact, all the US airports from which the alleged terrorists were purported to have boarded the 9/11 flights were “secured” by Israel-linked security companies.
Please tell us how you would do security if you were in charge of Ben-Gurion airport. What’s your alternative?
Well to start off I would not abuse disabled people. link to youtube.com My next step would be to not blacklist solidarity activists to keep them from coming to witness the Palestinian tragedy. Then I would not demand for passengers’ passwords and then go through their emails. And that’s just the beginning.
hophmi August 14, 2012 at 2:26 pm
“What’s your alternative?”
Get out of Palestine, take the illegal settlers, adhere to the UN Charter, International Law. Remove the obvious reasons one might want to harm Israelis, then one might be able to concentrate on the tiny tiny number of nut cases who hate Jews enough to want to harm them.
“Please tell us how you would do security if you were in charge of Ben-Gurion airport. What’s your alternative?”
Hophmi, I hope Mondo sends you at least a small, symbolic emolument every month. Nobody, but nobody, works the Socratic method in the interests of helping people see how simple the solutions are like you do. Please don’t tell me you do all this for free?
“Please tell us how you would do security if you were in charge of Ben-Gurion airport. What’s your alternative?”
Use ethno-religiously neutral security protocols. But of course if your people did that, then it wouldn’t accomplish it’s primary purpose of further oppressing the Palestinians.
“Use ethno-religiously neutral security protocols. ”
Please name some. Should we just detain everybody for hours?
And by the way, I disagree that it’s just ethnically based. It’s based on where a person is coming from, regardless of their ethnicity. I have a good friend who is Jewish who was given a hard time at Ben-Gurion this week because he’s traveled to a number of Middle Eastern Muslim countries. He was detained for 2.5 hours. If you think Europe and the US do not scrutinize people based on their country of origin and their passport stamps, then you’re being naive.
“Please name some.”
Sure. Do whatever you’re doing now: scanners, x-ray, passport check, etc., but don’t be raging racists, like they are now.
“Should we just detain everybody for hours?”
If you’re going to do it to one, you do it to all.
“And by the way, I disagree that it’s just ethnically based.”
Then you’re an ignorant fool or a liar. The stories are legion of people being detained and treated badly for no other reason than their ethnicity. If you think that two near identical people, demographically indistinguishable in terms of age, occupation, education, citizenship, etc., both coming from New York, both flying in to visit people in Israel and see some sites, but one with the name Morton Greenblatt and one with the name Rami Mohammad would receive the same treatment, you are out of your frickin’ mind.
Well, they could try using some intelligence instead of prejudice and ignorance. Just a thought. I know it doesn’t come easily, having witnessed their hi-tec paranoid stupidity in action.

MY SNARK: Become even more like apartheid-era South Africa and the old ‘Jim Crow’ South by adopting a strictly enforced “whites only” policy at Ben Gurion Int’l Airport. Tell the “coloureds” that if they want to fly somewhere they will have to fly out of and back into Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan. That’ll teach ‘em not to git all uppity!
P.S. Well “hush my mouth”, I just remembered that Israel pretty much already does that!

This is vaguely related. Being Black in Israel — or more specifically, Ethiopian. Bear in mind that Israel asked these people to come:
“… Similar incidents are becoming more and more prevalent. Doc Antenehb, head receptionist at a hotel in Netanya, said that recently, he was called to the reception desk to deal with a guest who was furious over his bill, and made a scene in the lobby. “I came to calm him down,” said Antenehb,” and he began to scream at me ‘go back to Africa, cushi [a Hebrew equivalent for the N-word], dirty Sudanese,’ and he spit on me, in front of my son.”
“Then I lost it. I didn’t go crazy, but I made him leave the hotel. Beforehand, I had already called the police to report that a customer was making a scene, and they told me that they were taking care of it, but no police officers arrived,” said Antenehb.
He continued, “The customer then went outside and called the police, claiming that a Sudanese person attacked him. I’ve never seen the police arrive so quickly. An officer arrived, and told me, ‘get in the car,’ and began to make accusations. ‘You’ve taken over the country, don’t worry, we’ll kick you all out. No one is giving me 3,000 Euros,’” said Antenehb.
The officer arrested me on the basis of a claim from one angry man, who said I attacked him. The security guard on duty at the hotel went outside, was astonished to see me in the patrol car, and explained the police officer who I was…”

It’s a shame that there are so many people in this country willing to turn traitor to everything this country has fought for over the last half-century in favor of that cancerous tumor in the Levant. zionism sure poisons everything.
“It’s a shame that there are so many people in this country willing to turn traitor to everything this country has fought for over the last half-century in favor of that cancerous tumor in the Levant…”
Maybe that tumor in the Levant gives them an excuse to do what they’ve been itching to do all along. Israel serves wonderfully well to legitimize all sorts of things.
Why do you think they defend Israel so ferociously? It’s not for Israel per se so much as it’s for what Israel stands for — in the worst sense possible.
Israel legitimizes brutality and bigotry, violence and oppression, intolerance and genocidal fantasy. You gotta realize — these people like Israel exactly for what it really is. You can demonstrate that it isn’t a democracy, that it doesn’t abide by international law, that it oppresses and dispossesses the Palestinians until you’re blue in the face. They don’t support Israel in spite of that. They support Israel because of that.
Why do you think that every single bigot, every single xenophobe and Nazi, every single lover of power and violence that crawls out from under a rock these days turns out to be a big Israel fan? Israel is what they want. You could even say Israel is indeed the bridge from the light into the dark. This is the best thing since the Third Reich — and I’m not kidding.
I think that there is a lot of truth to your statement. I think that there is a sense that these people really have a deficiency in them that the brutality of the situation in Palestine lets them vent the bile in their systems. I’ve often felt that many of the people on the pro-Israel side are looking for a situation which gives them what they believe is permission to hate people; not their actions, but the people themselves.
And it’s wrong when that hatred of people is manifested by the weak against the strong. Wrong, but understandable. When it is the strong against the weak, it is criminal.
@ ColinWright
Good perspective. Breivik, Geller, et alia prove your point.
We go through Logan many times because we have family in New England. Last time I got careless and hadn’t removed all the metal from my person. No trouble at all! No notice taken – that would not happen at Heathrow, I can tell you. But then my wife and I have blue eyes.
On my way in I had regretted being in a line where there were a couple of people with the dreaded swarthy complexion. My memories may have got a bit tangled over a couple of months but as I remember they both got seriously questioned and one, a young woman, was put into a backroom, no doubt for further humiliation. I remember thinking how little that sort of thing did for national security and how much resentment it must be building up.
Israel is such a thorn in the side of the U.S.A in so many ways.
So this what US citizens get for their tax dollars flowing into Israel. They get to import Israeli racism and the toxification of US democracy, as Geller so pointedly underlines. Nice.
I remember catching much flak mentioning elsewhere that we were modeling our security apparatus after the Israeli one. It was pooh-poohed as more Israeli hatred. Seems that we’re not just modeling their system, we’re pretty much letting them handle it.
That sure sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I have seen the report that security at Boston Airport was provided by the israeli firm when 911 happened.
RE: “what’s not touched on in the Times report is the fact

MY COMMENT: Naturally the New York Times would not want to mention that the allegedly racist procedures at Boston’s Logan International Airport are modeled on Israel’s policies at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport.
Omitting such information is essential to Manufacturing Consent (and maximizing profits). They certainly wouldn’t want to antagonize any advertisers, would they? Or even Ed Koch and his bosom buddy John Hagee.
And after all, they have that swank, new Renzo Piano skyscraper to pay for! Priorities, priorities, priorities! ! !
And in real estate that means: Location, location, location! ! !
P.S. Oh dear, am I being too harsh?
the israelification of the US makes me sick. my dad’s family choose the USA over israel, when sitting in a german DP camp in 1949. they likely didn’t want anything to do with the insanity going on in israel.
now zionists have made the US one with israel….
they orchestrated the US occupation of muslim lands (neocons), so that just like israel, we would be in a mindless, needless, concocted, abusive, murderous relationship with the muslim world.
at boston university, the charlatan wolf in sheep’s clothing, elie wiesel, stated in my college newspaper that “israel’s fight is now our fight”, DAYS after 9/11. no delay to capitalize on the events. ehud barak was on TV the morning of 9/11, pushing his agenda with skill.
and dare i say, israel, their lobbyists, and their agents were involved in the american coup, roughly 11 years ago.
link to youtube.com
this needs to be reversed, but i cannot see how…
like a cornered animal, israel-firsters will stop at nothing, especially as americans and the american political elite start to resist the israeli line, and the scripted “clash of civilizations”. we know the history of zionism. we know the pedigree of their zealots. we know their string of actions, including the USS liberty.
link to youtube.com
(the US as complicit as israel in that failed event; my uncle, a US air force colonel said it “was an act of war” with no hesitation when i probed him, but i said it was more than that; there had to be US buy-in; it was actually treason)
we know their game. but we are few…. so the macabre “game” continues. and israelis and americans suffer horribly as civilians under this BS, but our suffering pales in comparison to that dealt out to the palestinians and the muslim world….
but our very morality and collective sanity is also being lost, while i see perseverance, steadfastness, and amazing restraint from the vast vast vast majority of palestinians and muslims. i prefer the occupied west bank to the immoral bubble of tel aviv.
when will it stop? when will israelis figure out the agenda of their own elites, and stop it? when will americans throw off the lobby of the few (unrepresentative of most all american jews)? when? i fear it will be too late, and it is already decades too late….
Bravo, anonymous,
it is great to read a statement from a decent and honest jew whose family suffered under the nazi terror!! I wish many more in the same situation would realize that in Israel the present system is a mirror image of what happened 68-75 years ago in Europe, effecting the same people who now do the terrorizing and killing themselves.
Boston, being my old home before I moved to Europe a long time ago, is still special for me, therefore to hear that in that liberal city such depraved acts are allowed and practiced is a very sad news for me.
You should organize a public dessent and get that zionist firm out of the town.
Dont forget to mention two more countries that stand out as corupt, repressive, and carrierof American flags to lands around and beyond their borders i.e Pakistan and Saudi Arab as much as it could be allowed under US dispensations and that always allows without a limit. They have inflcited pain on mulsims and on Hindus,Christians, and Ahamdyias in the name of purer islam but always in the service of the masters that is US-UK and in the process have picked up some crumbs ( in case of Pakistan ) and has exported internal tension ( primarliy Saudia Arab and Pakistan ) to places like Libya, Syria, Checehnya,Kashmir.

Whatever the Israelis are doing seems to be working. When was the last successful terrorist attack at B-G Airport? (I think it was the early 1970s) The last successful hijack of an El Al plane? 1969? Potential terrorists will look to take advantage of “holes” in security, in Israel they can’t seem to find any.
But who was watching the fox in the hen-house on 2001 at Logan Airport ? and who was watching the Fox in Amsterdam airport 0n 2009?

The Verint system and the NICE sytem installed at airport and port aurhorities across states allow Israel to use the information ( thorugh back door , sometime from Israel itself ) to its advantage when necessarry and let loose false falg opertaion if necessarry. Duplicity was found out by DEA authority police, federal agencies in early in around 1999 how the information derived from these sources were ending up with the drug dealers who then were changing thier strategies outflanking the governemnt. Austarlia has not been sapred who found out to thier dismay that Israelis can provide them with information from Israel that they could not from thier offices in Australia. Other countyries have raised same concerns.
“Whatever the Israelis are doing seems to be working.”
So what? Arresting everyone under 25 would cut down on traffic accidents but it would still by a grave injustice.
It could be argued that bombs going off left right and center, killing, maiming etc would be the greater injustice.
“It could be argued that bombs going off left right and center, killing, maiming etc would be the greater injustice.”
The injustice which the israelis have inflicted on the Palestinians pales to just about anything the Palestinains could do to them. The israelis have had decades to end the occupation and give freedom to the Palestinians, but they continually assault, occupy, murder and kill. One can only presume that the israelis desire to have a perpetual state of conflict and are wiling to sacrifice a certain percentage of its men, women and children, to “bombs going off left, right and center” as an excuse so that the israelis can continue the occupation of Palestine and the murder of Palestinians.
It could be argued that bombs … *insert your favorite macho, pseudo-intellectual world-weary pose here*
and you’re working under the assumption that ‘terrorists’ are intent on bombing civilians at ben gurion airport. i believe that assumption is incorrect. i also assume that if killing israeli or jewish civilians wherever they may be found was a fundamental part of the plans of ‘terrorists’, they could kill israeli or jewish civilians almost at will in nearly every country on the globe. in fact, if blowing up civilian aircraft or attacking civilian air facilities in the ‘decadent’ west were more particularly part of ‘terrorist’ planning, it’s a plan that could be implemented easily enough. airport security is laughably incompetent, and the technology in place can be dodged fairly simply as has been demonstrated.
Shorter Dano: Those Palestinians should go and bomb the settlers, not the airport. After all those are the people Israel put there as bait.
>> Potential terrorists will look to take advantage of “holes” in security, in Israel they can’t seem to find any.
Except for those massive holes in the apartheid wall through which centuries-old olive trees are being “smuggled”. Just think of the number of terrorists, hidden in the crowns of those smuggled trees, who could infiltrate the “Jewish State”…but who haven’t done so.
