New Metro North ads
Last month we did several posts about the awesome maps ad that ran on Metro-North commuter stations in New York, chronicling Palestinian dispossession.
Well the other side is fighting back. Writes a friend, “This sign is on all the local railway stations from Croton to Grand Central!” I’m told it is underwritten by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, the Pamela Geller outfit.
The AFDI also sponsored that San Francisco Muni ad: “In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man…. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad.”
I’m glad the issue is being politicized. An open discussion, and debate over the facts, are in the interest of those who seek justice in this conflict. That said, can you imagine an ad saying, “It’s not anti-semitism, it’s realism about Jews?” and that then listed Israeli war crimes? Thanks to Andrew Courtney.

How about we question the context of this ‘Islamic’ monolith first?
What is the definition and the parameters? I’m sure resident racists/bigots/Islamophobes/Jewish nationalists, hophmi, gulag-g, blobs and company will chime in to elaborate.
Let’s take it a step further though AND in a different direction:

Seriously, these ads are inherently propagandistic. They can only fit a small amount of information. So you have to be as honest as you can.
Simply showing numbers isn’t enough, especially framing terrorism as ‘Islamic attacks’ in pure numbers and only SINCE 9/11 as if that is when terrorism began historically.
Like as in, terrorism begins when ‘they’ hurt us first and we never did anything to them to precipitate such animosities or hatreds or blah blah.
F***ing stupid. But then again, that’s who these ads are aimed at. The stupid, stupid ignorant people who may be professionals even but when it comes to political issues they are emotionally invested in deeply (like our resident Jewish nationalists with American citizenship) are totally certifiable insane.

There’s an asterisk by the number “19,250” that seems to point to “and counting” at the center right. If not, I’m curious what it does point to.
I find these claims about attacks since 9/11 very interesting. “19,250” deadly Islamic attacks since 9/11 — in the United States? Obviously not. Not even delusional moronic racists like Geller are claiming 19,250 dead in the US in post-9/11 attacks. And it’s not 19,250 in Israel. Nor is it Europe. So they’re including attacks in Arab and Muslim states. The source of the number is no doubt the imagination of someone like Dennis Ross, or anyone at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
The obvious follow-up: “NN,NNN deadly Israeli attacks since 9/11.” I’m probably understating the number of attacks there by a factor of 10 or so.
This will escalate until some local government or MTA flunky tries to silence it. Since they will want to silence pro-Palestinian voices but not pro-Israel ones, there will be some hollow gesture toward content-neutrality that will have the effect of limiting voices to the ones politicians obey.
Orwellian in nature.
Above that should be a LED signage indicating the daily hectares that Project Israel takes every day. At least that would be focused in scope compared to the global Jihadi number of 19,250 attacks. Are these deadly attacks cyber attacks and attacks against women? Surely they are to puff up the value.
Where the hell did they get that number? There have been about 4000 days since 9/11. There have been an average of five deadly Islamic attacks per day since then? My guess is that they are totaling all of the deaths in Egypt, Libya, Syria over the past couple years, or possibly sectarian fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, and considering each to be a deadly Islamic attack. What an outrageous misrepresentation. By that method, what would be the number of Western deadly attacks on Muslims? Hundreds of thousands at least, probably well over a million. Are there no limits where facts are concerned? Would the MTA publish billboards saying that only 14,000 Jews died in the Holocaust?
By the way, almost all MW readers, possibly even the hophmis and Fredblogs, would dismiss these billboards as nonsense, but we should not make the mistake of assuming that everyone would feel the same way. People have a tendency to gullibly believe any BS that supports their cherished position, and will take at face value this factoid and spread it around with conviction and certainty.
