Is Israel ‘Funtown’?

Here are several responses to yesterday’s news that an Israeli amusement park called Superland segregates high school students on a racial basis.

First, there’s a giant mock billboard in front of Superland’s ferris wheel flying around Twitter and Facebook. The Hebrew in translation reads:

“Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for Jews. Mondays and Wednesdays for Arabs.”

Here is a rightwing Israeli news site justifying the Jim Crow policy: “Parents: Violent Arabs Make ‘Superland’ Super-bad.” Did they interview any Palestinian parents?

And as for the headline, Martin Luther King Jr. once gave a speech in which he told how painful it was to explain to his daughter that she wasn’t allowed to go to the amusement park she saw out the car window, “Fun Town” outside Atlanta:
 

Yolanda we have a problem. You know, some people don’t do the right things and they are misguided. And so they have developed a system where white people go certain places and colored people go certain places… they don’t allow colored children to go to Fun Town…I said, Yokie, even though you can’t go to Fun Town I want you to know that you are as good as anybody that goes into Fun Town….

In the not too distant future Fun Town and every other town will be open to all of God’s children because we’re going to work for it.

I’m reminded of my friend Sandra Tamari being asked if she was Jewish when she tried to enter the country, of the legislation sponsored by my senator, Barbara Boxer, that would justify Israeli racism in its border practices, and of Najwa, Sasha, and Nour–and I ask myself “Is Israel Fun Town”?

Nothing like Jim Crow in Disneyland. Beiden says there’s not a crack of light between Israel and US values. Reminds me of the space between the hair plugs in his head.

I don’t know about fun, but “Brand Israel” keeps telling us that Tel Aviv is a gay ol’ town (at least on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays).
