Israeli government justifies killing child protesters in Gaza: They’re not in school

Israel/Palestine

The picture of Alaa Zamli, 15, is on top of this post because of his beautiful smile, which should have taken him very far in life. But he lived in Gaza, where he was killed by an Israeli sniper during the fence protests April 10. Today Ben White tweeted Zamli’s picture along with those of three other children protesters Israeli snipers have killed in Gaza.

Israeli soldiers have killed four Palestinian children during the protests in the occupied Gaza Strip since March 30. Every sniper shot is approved, & recorded, Israeli officials say.

Ibrahim Abu Sha’er, 17, killed by Israeli sniper in Gaza

Hussein Madi, 13, killed by Israeli sniper in Gaza

Mohammad Ayoub, 14, killed by Israeli sniper in Gaza

Mohammed Ayoub was the last to be killed: last Friday at 4:30 PM.

Israeli education minister Naftali Bennett was asked on Sunday if Israel had not gone too far when it killed Ayoub, as Orly Noy reports at +972:

Army Radio morning show host Razi Barkai asked Education Minister Naftali Bennett if “we had gone too far” in killing 15-year-old Mohammed Ayoub during the Gaza return march protests last Friday.

“If he had gone to school like every other kid,” Bennett responded, “there wouldn’t have been a problem.” That is what Israel’s education minister had to say about the murder of a child – killed by a sniper’s bullet – during a protest.

This is now a theme of Israeli propaganda surrounding the killings in Gaza: the children are to blame for not being in school, or not reading books.

Two days ago the Israeli government agency that administers the occupied territories (COGAT) posted to Facebook  this photograph of a Palestinian child holding a rock at the Gaza protests, and said: “When you give children rocks to throw instead of books to learn from, it is no wonder why Gaza is in the state it is.”

Picture of child holding a rock in Gaza, posted by Israeli administration of occupied territories.

The agency went on to blame this lack of education and violence on Hamas. “The Hamas terrorist organization is raising a generation of children who learn only violence rather than receiving tools for the rest of their life…. As [long] as Gazans begin to invest in their children’s future instead of following the path of destruction Hamas leads them on, there will only be continued hardships in Gaza.”

But the violence is going in one direction now: no Israeli has been injured seriously in the ongoing onslaught on Gaza. B’Tselem has said it is unlawful to direct “live fire at unarmed civilians who do not pose a danger…. Israeli officials are relying on worst-case scenarios to justify these orders.”

The main reason that children are holding rocks is that they have grown up being educated by their parents about villages inside Israel from which their parents and grandparents were expelled– the basis of the Great March of Return.

The killing of unarmed children by sniper fire ought to be a big story in the U.S. It’s not. Although, yes, Gaza has obviously marked a turning point in American Jewish opinion. Natalie Portman cited the Gaza “atrocities” when she refused to attend a prize ceremony in Israel at which she was to receive a $2 million award, and that boycott by a famous Jewish actress has spiked fear among leading Zionists.

But Israeli justifications for killing Gazans were given a platform last week at J Street, the Democratic Party’s Israel lobby, when Israeli politician Tzipi Livni said from the main stage:

I also know the ethical code of the IDF [Israel Defense Forces]. So if a soldier breaks that ethical code or violates the law, he is prosecuted and punished and I want you to know that because the state of Israel with the values that it represents does not and should not tolerate it. And I share this with you because I am familiar with the criticize [sic]. I know what the pictures that you see here. And I know that it is sometimes difficult to stand with these values and stand with Israel’s security, and I just wanted to share this with you personally.

This claim is patently false. As B’Tselem says:

The military’s announcement that the general staff investigation mechanism led by Brig. Gen. Motti Baruch will look into the incidents in which Palestinians were killed, focusing on civilian deaths, is pure propaganda, intended – among other things – to prevent an independent international investigation.

On a more hopeful note: Israeli justifications for violence are not being accepted by IfNotNow, the young insurgent American Jewish group that is demanding that Jewish leaders speak out so that more Palestinians are not killed.

One of the principal supports for Israeli occupation is the fact that the media fails to inform us about its horrors. We can only hope that the killings of these children– for not being in school –get the attention they deserve.

Thanks to Allison Deger.

Bennett and Livni should stop wasting time tip-toeing around the issue and making excuses and just tell it to the world straight the way Yaacov Lozowick does:

“The Jews will defend themselves even if it means killing children.”

    • LHunter
      April 24, 2018, 5:41 pm

Defend themselves from equal rights and humanity

Blaming children for peacefully protesting instead of being in schools that are routinely bombed shows just how brazen and vulgar these Zionists are – they are now taunting the world – we can do as we please when we please with complete impunity – giving all of us the bird

Their fall, and it will come, will be as spectacular as their audaciousness

      • Maghlawatan
        April 24, 2018, 8:19 pm

The fall has already started by the looks of things.

This is from the world of finance but all crises are basically the same

“In real life, unlike in many of our models, crises are not an instant but a time period. This time dimension creates ample opportunity for all sort of strategic decisions within a crisis. Distressed agents (zionists) have to decide when and if to let go of their assets (Settlements) , knowing that a miscalculation on the right timing can be very costly. Speculators and strategic players (The Goys) have to decide when to reinforce a downward spiral, and when to stabilize it. Governments have to decide how long to wait before intervening, fully aware that delaying can be counterproductive, but that the political tempo may require that a full-blown crisis becomes observable for bickering to be put aside.”

And Israel is not ready for what is coming.

Yaacov is honest. Get it out in the open.

The sad thing about Israel is that it is far worse than the old antisemitic tropes when it comes to killing children. The tropes were fake but Israel is for real.

Back in old Poland Jews were falsely accused of killing children so their blood could be used in ritual matzos.

Killing children has been a recurrent theme in the Christian persecution of Jews. One of the reasons the antisemites of old chose children as the meme was because of the cultural shock value. Parents anywhere are horrified when children are murdered.

      Zionism is truly insane.

      Don’t name the dead children.
The people must not know the names
      of the dead children.
The names of the children must be hidden.
      The children must be nameless.
The children must leave this world
      having no names.
No one must know the names of
      the dead children.
No one must say the names of the
      dead children.
No one must even think that the children
      have names.
People must understand that it would be dangerous
to know the names of the children.
The people must be protected from
knowing the names of the children.
The names of the children could spread
      like wildfire.
The people would not be safe if they knew
      the names of the children.
      Don’t name the dead children.
      Don’t remember the dead children.
Don’t think of the dead children.
      Don’t say: ‘dead children’.

This has absolutely nothing – zero, zilch, nada – to do with “self-defense.” That’s the time-worn Israeli self-touting defense. Israel has always – repeat: ALWAYS – had military far superior to any of its Arab adversaries. The Palestinians are a people occupied by Israel since 1967 and one whose land was stolen from 1948 forward. Israel kills as a matter of course – viz Sharon’s special forces in the early 1950s and subsequent devastations all the way through today. It is far better to compare Israel in its ethnic cleansing to the Americas and their ethnic-cleansing and extermination of indigenous populations. Israel is a state that routinely commits war crimes and crimes against humanity. BTW I am Jewish and for the past forty years have been writing and speaking out against what Israel does in the names of Jews world-wide.

      April 25, 2018, 11:12 am

And “defend themselves” must relate to the equally important Zionist mandate: “An eye for an eyelash”. Those kids did not threaten the snipers (too far away) and did not threaten anyone outside Gaza (also too far away). Littering (throwing stones upon that ever-so-clean Israeli territory) should not be such an offense as to be punished by wounding-by-firearms, certainly not by death.

BTW, “an eye for an eye” is an ancient rule intended precisely to undo the ancient form of this also present-day Zionist attitude: if you harm me at all, even think ill of me, I am threatened and I may therefore (with impunity and a clear conscience) kill you. “Ten eyes for an eye.”

Bennet and Livni are exactly what Professor Israel Shahak meant so many decades ago when he used the term “Judeonazis.” That is precisely what these people are. That is precisely what the snipers who are killing demonstrators in Gaza are. The biggest criminal state is the US, which routinely backs Israel – no surprise, since the US has backed fascist governments (and installed fascist tyrants) world-wide to secure its global domination. The more I study Jewish behavior from the early 19th century, the more I become convinced that Jewish violence increases continuously with the collapse of Commonwealth Poland and with the vanishing of the pre-modern Jewish economic niche.

Jewish media power covers up this increasing violence against non-Jews, but if we want to see a solution to the problem of Zionist criminality, we must talk about this history honestly and Mondoweiss should stop censoring facts.

In the 20th century Jewish Soviet leaders orchestrated and perpetrated genocidal violence that starts in the 1920s. Zionists catch up with Jewish Soviet crimes when they commit cold-blooded genocide in 47-8 and continue to perpetrate genocide right before our eyes in the slaughter of Gaza children.

        https://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3342999,00.html

In other words racist murderous Jews have a much worse history than flying planes, blowing themselves up indiscriminately in order to kill innocent people, firing rockets indiscriminately into civilian areas, or using children as human shields.

I grew up in Israel. From at least kindergarten onward we are indoctrinated that non-Jews lust for Jewish blood and that Palestinians are worst. Many Jewish children are instructed in the use of firearms to kill Palestinians.

My thinking was not particularly human when I served in the IDF and under orders murdered unarmed Palestinian men, women, and children including a women with a child in her arms.

I and the other soldiers in my unit were without doubt legitimate targets for the Palestinian resistance.

        April 25, 2018, 5:12 pm

However, there used to be an adage among lawyers: “the greater the truth the greater the libel.”

The greater the truth, the greater the libel.
A maxim of the law in vogue at the time of the English trials for malicious libel, while Mansfield presided over the King’s Bench, but not to be found ipsissimis verbis in any of his published decisions. Mr. Christian, in a note to “Blackstone’s Commentaries,” IV. 150, says, “The words of Lord Mansfield, ‘The greater truth, the greater libel,’ which his enemies wished with much eagerness to convert to the prejudice of that noble peer’s reputation as a judge, were founded in principle and supported by very ancient authority.” The maxim is said to have originated in the Star Chamber. Chancellor Kent, in People v. Creswell, 3 Johnson, 363, says, “The prohibition to the defendant, in criminal proceedings, to give the truth of an alleged libel in evidence, first received authoritative sanction in a court of common law by the nisi prius decision of Lord Raymond in 1731, in Francklyn’s case, 17 State Trials, 626. The doctrine never extended in its scope beyond criminal cases.” In the report of the nisi prius case of The King v. Woodhull, 20 State Trials, 902, Lord Mansfield said to the jury, “My brother Glynn has admitted that the truth or falsehood of a libel, whether public or private, however prosecuted, is out of the question.” “At this assertion of Lord Mansfield,” the report adds, “every man in court was shocked. Serjeant Glynn was astonished, and, on application made to him instantly by several of the counsel and his friends to contradict Lord Mansfield’s assertion, Mr. Glynn, with that honest diffidence natural to him, asked them, ‘Good God! did I admit any thing like what Lord Mansfield says? Did I, in any incorrectness in the expression, or by any mistake, use words that could be so misunderstood or misinterpreted?’” From the lord chief justice’s words in this or in some other and unreported nisi prius case, the doctrine of that day may have become attached to his name, as a doggerel verse shows to have been the case:—
“old Mansfield, who writes like the Bible,
Says, ‘The more ’tis a truth, sir, the more ’tis a libel.’”

The victim, Ahsan Abu-Srur, 54, from the Askfar refugee camp near Nablus, was apparently abandoned by his employer, without any attempt to assist him. The body was found lying on the sidewalk outside 7 Ben Atar Street, in south Tel Aviv by passersby, and then taken to Ichilov hospital in Tel Aviv, where he was pronounced dead.
Several eyewitnesses told Haaretz that they had seen the contractor arriving at the apartment where the renovations were being done. He noticed the laborer was apparently critically injured and, with the help of two workers, dragged the man to the sidewalk opposite and left him there, without helping him. ”

Jews don’t … use children as human shields.

Since 2004, Israel has used Palestinian CHILDREN as human shields in 21 documented cases
    http://mondoweiss.net/2013/06/palestinian-describes-israeli/

Israel uses Jewish civilian men, women and children as human shields (aka: “a defense bulwark”) in strategically located, subsidised settlements on stolen land deep inside occupied enemy territories (territories with which it is still technically at war).

The late Ed Koch (former mayor of New York City) recognised the Jewish settlements and settlers as Israel’s “defense bulwark” against “the Islamist armies” of no less than five nations.

“You ask Israel to cease building settlements on the West Bank, which are intended not only to house Israelis, but to provide a defense bulwark when the Islamist armies of the surrounding states, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria – Assad or his opponents – and Iraq, again try militarily to crush Israel” ~ Ed Koch, 2013

Press Release: The Palestine Liberation Organization

“April 25, 2018: Dr. Ashrawi denounces the sentencing of Israeli border policeman Ben Dery who murdered Palestinian teenager Nadeem Nuwara in 2014”

“In response to today’s sentencing of Israeli border policeman Ben Dery who murdered unarmed Palestinian teenager Nadeem Nuwara in cold blood on May 15, 2014, PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi issued the following statement:

“‘It is ludicrous that Palestinian child Ahed Tamimi who confronted an Israeli solider who invaded her home in the occupied West Bank has been forced to serve eight months in an Israeli jail cell. Meanwhile, Israeli border policeman Ben Dery who shot and murdered unarmed Palestinian teenager Nadeem Nuwara only received a nine month prison sentence.

“‘Such a conviction represents Israel’s deliberate dehumanization of its Palestinian victims, primarily children, which is the outcome of decades of the military occupation that holds an entire nation under captivity and employs an unremitting and lethal shoot-to-kill policy against Palestinians.

“‘Dery’s use of excessive violence and live ammunition against a child who posed no immediate threat constitutes a war crime and a crime against humanity under international law. This unwarranted and unjust decision represents a double standard in Israel’s outrageous sentences passed against Palestinians by Israeli military courts while Israeli occupation forces and illegal and extremist settlers are given free license to act with complete impunity.

“‘As long as the international community remains silent, the injustice and oppression of the Palestinian people will continue unabated. Israel must be held to account for its unbridled violence and gross violations against the Palestinian people.'”

Question for anyone who would repeat this nonsense: what sort of bulwark are the settlements against any modern army? Not even early warning, I’d imagine, unless early warning stuff (i.e., military stuff) is made part of the settlement.

Sure … like ALL the Palestinian kids are in schools on Fridays, right??

Classic circularity. Do you think Bennet knew that when he made the statement, was counting on other readers to NOT know it, and consider it plausible (ie. just plausible enough to effectively imply Palestinians are violent slackers from childhood)?

Seems like that omission is a method, rather than an oversight.

Mohammad Ayoub, was killed on a Friday by the Israeli terrorist snipers while peacefully protesting (as is the right of people around the world when they protest occupation and brutality). There is no school on Friday.

Bennett apparently isn’t bright enough to realize that the marches every Friday after prayers are organized in part because kids can participate in demonstrations, just as African/American kids participate in the US on Saturdays and Sundays.

    BECAUSE THERE IS NO SCHOOL.

Latest report from Human Rights Watch…

Israel: Army Demolishing West Bank Schools – Could Amount to War Crimes
    https://www.hrw.org/news/2018/04/25/israel-army-demolishing-west-bank-schools

(New York, April 25, 2018) – Israel has repeatedly denied Palestinians permits to build schools in the West Bank and demolished schools built without permits, making it more difficult or impossible for thousands of children to get an education, Human Rights Watch said today. On April 25, 2018, Israel’s high court will hold what may be the final hearing on the military’s plans to demolish a school in Khan al-Ahmar Ab al-Hilu, a Palestinian community. It is one of the 44 Palestinian schools at risk of full or partial demolition because Israeli authorities say they were built illegally.

The Israeli military refuses to permit most new Palestinian construction in the 60 percent of the West Bank where it has exclusive control over planning and building, even as the military facilitates settler construction. The military has enforced this discriminatory system by razing thousands of Palestinian properties, including schools, creating pressure on Palestinians to leave their communities. When Israeli authorities have demolished schools, they have not taken steps to ensure that children in the area have access to schools of at least the same quality.
    …..
Most West Bank schools at risk of demolition fall within Area C. Israel justifies its demolition of schools and other Palestinian property there not on security grounds, but rather on the grounds that they were built without permits from the military. However, the military refuses the vast majority of Palestinian building requests, and has zoned only 1 percent of Area C for Palestinian building, even as construction proceeds with few constraints in nearby Jewish settlements.
