‘Scoop Israel’ — Stand With Us markets propaganda with Waugh’s cachet

Stand With Us is a youth-oriented pro-Israel group. It is sponsoring an international conference for student journalists at Ben Gurion University in the Negev this summer called “Scoop Israel.” The title and ink-stained logo seem to play off Evelyn Waugh’s famous satire of Abyssinia foreign coverage, which, as I remember was steeped in racism (The Daily Beast got its name from the newspaper in that book). I wonder how many Arab journalists will be at this conference?

we are offering you a unique opportunity to get a glimpse into some of the most complicated and debated issues of conflict journalism.

The news we report can be destructive for a community, by promoting fear and violence. Or our news reports can be constructive, by making citizens better informed, and possibly safer, by also reporting on efforts to promote conflict reduction. This is conflict sensitive journalism. A conflict sensitive journalist takes no sides, but is engaged in the search for solutions. Conflict sensitive journalists choose their words carefully.

What, like taking pointers from a group that calls itself Stand With Us?

Hilarious stuff.

Reminds me of ads I’ve heard on the radio in the DC area for the right-wing Washington Times: “fearless reporting, American values.” Right…….

Henry Miller, George Orwell, Evelyn Waugh. Who’s the next (conveniently) dead scribbler Phil will conjure in order to flog Israel?

‘The news we report can be destructive for a community, by promoting fear and violence. Or our news reports can be constructive, by making citizens better informed…’

Will there also be a seminar on proofreading and sentence mechanics?
