The only answer to the violent contentment of Israeli society is BDS

Last week Dahlia Scheindlin analyzed polling data in Israel for left Zionist group Americans for Peace Now and concluded that the left within the Green Line is alive- albeit of questionable wellness-, and worryingly, rather than making common cause with their Palestinian cousins and voting for the progressive, pro-equality Joint List, some of those aforementioned “leftwing” Jewish voters will instead vote far-right, in order to oust Netanyahu. As for the “worrying” fact that young Jews exhibit hardline, rightwing attitudes, in Scheindlin’s estimation, that’s actually a long pattern in Israel going back to the ’50s and “has to do with the idea that the romantic spirit of the nation is militarist and nationalist.”

As a result, the saccharine and disingenuous optimism of liberal and left Zionist groups like Americans for Peace Now that obsess over a two-state solution are forced to face the music written by their own hired composer- in this case, Dahlia Scheindlin. Indeed, while the politically eclectic and self described non-Zionist pundit Scheindlin acknowledges the “stability” of left wing voters (many of whom are Palestinian and therefore, discriminated against in broader society, including Jewish Left wing parties like Meretz, and whose Joint List is disincluded from governing coalitions), she reveals that the crux of the matter of actually existing Zionism is the worst sort of inertia: that of an endless litany of ethnic cleansing, war crimes and- yes- apartheid committed ad nauseum, ad infinitum by the Zionist state.

Irrespective of whatever are Scheindlin’s intentions- and the complexities of her own personal politics- the thrust of her commentary to a predominantly left Zionist audience is shocking in that it pushes her listeners to the precise conclusion that Zionists of all stripes seek to ultimately avoid: the understanding that the irrational and violent contentment among Israeli society points to the absolute imperative of the BDS picket line.

Scheindlin does repeatedly credit the “resilience” of a paltry 12% of Jewish voters who identify with the left- and the bantustanization of Historic Palestine known as the “Two State Solution.” Yet she reveals that out of the desire to rid themselves of Netanyahu, some of them will end up voting for rightwing parties (Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beteinu and Gideon Sa’ar’s New Hope) or for centrist parties whose politicians possess rightwing politics on the maintenance of the status quo of Apartheid- and annexation of much of the West Bank, both de jure and de facto. Furthermore, Netanyahu himself has won elections allowing him to maintain leadership of the state for 12 years straight, often with centrist and even “left” partners.

This is precisely why it is so important to focus on Israelis’ violent contentment. The voters know and approve of what their government has done, from the piles of 1,700 Palestinian civilians killed by the Israeli government in besieged Gaza in 2014, to the over 7,000,000 Palestinian refugees who have been denied the right to return to their homes because of their ethnicity for the past 70 years, to the undeniable reality dutifuly reported over the years by everyone from Jimmy Carter to Yesh Din, of a supremacist apartheid regime (which occupies every inch of land from the Jordan to the Mediterranean)

Considering that the likeliest threat to Netanyahu’s leadership now arises from politicians to his right, groups like J-Street and Americans for Peace Now that see hope within Israel’s left zionist camp over the Palestinian led, non-violent BDS movement amounts to holding the “white moderates” as the catalyst for change in the Jim Crow South– those same white moderates excoriated by the great Martin Luther King Jr. because they said they approved his cause but didn’t like the tension and unrest of marches and sit-ins- over the Montgomery Bus Boycotters. Scheindlin’s commentary and knowledge of historical background helps illuminate the implications behind the lengths liberal Zionists will go to prove that the apartheid project possesses some sort of fundamental decency: after all, it’s just the “romantic spirit of the nation… militarist and nationalist.”

Still, seeing that Scheindlin acknowledges a stability inherent in the occupation of Palestine, her analysis leads to a very simple conclusion. Since Israeli society is deeply invested in maintaining apartheid, with precious little in the way of domestic political dissent, and with the United States dedicated to arming it perpetually come hell or high waters, the overwhelmingly Palestinian-supported and -led BDS movement is the only way to achieve any justice in Historic Palestine.

While Scheindlin’s sobering analysis attempts to find glimmers of hope amidst the grim reality of colonialism and apartheid, the starkness of the findings of such a search in and of itself exposes a truly bitter pill: when given a choice between equality and perpetual Nakba, even left Zionists will choose the latter.

Writer’s postscript: I revised this article after publication to remove some cynicism. My original article failed to consider that Scheindlin was trying to teach her audience an important, albeit quite bitter lesson and she needed to be somewhat mild in her language for them to be willing to heed it.

“Rhodes suggested that ‘some conservative Democrats… [have] been playing these talking points around the two-state solution, and then blame the Palestinians for it never happening. I got so sick of hearing, ‘Palestinians never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity.’ But when did we give them one?”

“Later, Rhodes speculated on what drives Netanyahu’s world view: ‘Maybe the view is, ‘Jews have been screwed throughout history, by a corrupt cruel world. And so you know what, we just have to be corrupt and cruel ourselves. That’s the only way to survive in this world.’”

A true word: “When given a choice between equality and perpetual Nakba, even left Zionists will choose the latter.”

The Zionist labpr-party organised the Nakba of course, but the party to it’s left (now called Meretz) were just as complicit in it. Also in 1956 this left wing supported Israels attack on Egypt. The pattern you see time and again is that Israel enforces its colonial project with wars, and that the whole of Zionisms left, when faced with the choice between dissention and closing the Zionist ranks, chooses the latter.

…When given a choice between equality and perpetual Nakba, even left Zionists will choose the latter.

No surprise there: When it comes to I-P what matters first and foremost to every single Zionist – from “do the dirty work” strong to “hold their noses” liberal – is ensuring the continuation of Jewish / “Jewish State” supremacism in as much as possible of geographic Palestine.

Justice, accountability, equality and respect for human rights – moral values they would at other times (and quite hypocritically) advocate and defend – need not apply.

“Ben Rhodes cites ‘very aggressive, pro-Likud media’ in the U.S. for intensity on Israel”

“Rhodes joined Peter Beinart on his podcast, Occupied Thoughts, Feb. 17/21”

EXCERPT:
“Peter Beinart, a fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace and editor-at-large of Jewish Currents, hosted former Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes on his podcast, Occupied Thoughts, to discuss Israel, Iran and antisemitism.

“Rhodes, who served in former President Barack Obama’s White House from 2009 to 2017, expounded on how working on Israel policy issues in the National Security Council differed from work related to other foreign countries.

“’Number one, you have this incredibly organized pro-Israel community that is very accustomed to having access in the White House, in Congress, at the State Department,’ Rhodes told Beinart. ‘It’s kind of taken as granted, as given, that that’s going to be the way things are done.’

“In addition, Rhodes said, ‘the media interest is dramatically intensified. And that’s both a very aggressive, kind of pro-Likud media in the United States [and] it’s also just the mainstream media that delights in Israel controversies.’

“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Rhodes suggested, ‘knew that not only could he kind of gin up the right-wing, pro-Likud media in the United States, which is pretty vast. But he also knew that if he needled Obama, he would create a weeklong political story.’

“Rhodes said he wished ‘the other side of the debate,’ which he said includes Republicans as well as some Democrats, ‘would just be honest.’

“’I wish the right… would just say, ‘We don’t believe there should be a Palestinian state, we believe in the concept of a greater Israel, we feel sorry for the Palestinians, but they’re just gonna have to deal with it,’ said Rhodes. ‘That’s the position of the Israeli government. Frankly, that’s the position of the Republican Party, even if they’re not honest about it.’ (cont’d)

Would be nice also to stop calling limited boycott the “only way”. It’s certainly a valuable tool for education and mobilization, but very far from being the only one.

Just as a reminder, many of the legal and non-violent things that are to be done, urgently and insistently, are listed in one single article that just came out:

https://www.unz.com/pgiraldi/what-to-do-about-israel/

“some sympathizers inevitably respond: “Okay, so what are you going to do about it?” So now I am going to address some of the things that can be done by ordinary Americans and by groups…”

“…demand from our elected officials that American law be enforced on Israel. First… the failure of the Justice and Treasury Departments to enforce registration of pro-Israel lobbying groups. Registration would force groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP) and the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA) to open their books regarding the money they receive and spend and could also require them to reveal details of their lobbying activity.”

“… law is not being enforced… regarding Israel’s nuclear arsenal, which was created by stealing both technology and enriched uranium from the U.S. The Symington Amendment on foreign relations forbids giving aid to any country that is either a nuclear proliferator or is in possession of undeclared nuclear weapons. Demand that it be enforced fully now and end all aid to Israel.”

“U.S. Israel-centric charities or foundations should also have their tax exemptions strictly enforced. Humanitarian aid is fine, but if they are funding the illegal West Bank settlements, which many of them are, they should have their exemptions revoked. And finally, Israelis caught spying or Americans who are assisting in the theft of U.S. classified or sensitive information should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, to include use of the Espionage Act. Currently, such individuals are almost always given a pass. If President Joe Biden can continue the persecution of legitimate journalist Julian Assange under the Espionage Act, he can certainly do the same vis-à-vis Israel’s spies.”
