We can rejoice that Morocco has catapulted Africa and the Arab World into World Cup history, but if we support Palestine, we must also support the Sahrawi people’s struggle for liberation.

In recent weeks, Palestinians across the West Bank have organized themselves into small “battalions” of both armed and unarmed youth to confront the constant Israeli invasions of their villages and homes. Not much is known about them, nor about the youth that makes up these decentralized groups, but they continue to appear because Israeli army and settler provocation show no signs of waning.

Israeli forces killed Jana Zakarneh, 16, during a search-and-arrest operation in the West Bank city of Jenin. Zakarneh was standing on the roof of her family’s home near the Israeli invasion when she was shot with a single bullet to the head, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Zakarneh is the 15th minor to be killed in Jenin since the start of the year and the 17th Palestinian woman or girl to be killed in 2022. This year, the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank has hit record numbers — the highest since the UN began documenting such killings in 2005.

It is surely shocking to hear advertisements for racial separation in an American progressive space, but last weekend’s J Street conference featured an Israeli politician, Yair Golan, offering just that as the only solution to the Palestinian problem: Israel must preserve the Zionist “dream” by separating from the Palestinian people and maintaining a “solid Jewish majority–and we need to admit that.”
