West Bank Dispatch: 75 years after Nakba, Palestinian refugees are still under siege 

On the Nakba's 75th anniversary, the Zionist war against Palestinian refugees is alive and well, as refugee camps continue to be besieged by the Israeli army in the attempt to quash resistance.

  • On Monday, May 15, Israeli forces invaded Nablus city and killed Saleh Mohammad Saleh Sabra, 22.
  • May 11 marked the first commemoration of the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh last year. Abu Akleh was a Palestinian-American senior correspondent. killed while covering developments in Jenin refugee camp. Mondoweiss Senior Palestine correspondent Mariam Barghouti wrote a reflection on Shireen’s legacy and the impact she had on Barghouti when she was a young aspiring journalist.
  • On May 11, Israeli forces killed a Palestinian in Qabatya near Jenin during a military invasion on the town. The Ministry of Health identified the man as Jamal Hamamdeh Kamil, 30. Another Palestinian was killed on the same day, 66-year-old Ghazi Yousef Mustafa Shihab. Shihab was killed during a military invasion on Noor Shams refugee camp in the city of Tulkarem, 84 kilometers northwest of Ramallah.
  • Israeli forces continued their near daily raids on Palestinian towns and villages in the West Bank. On Friday, May 12, Israeli forces injured at least one person in Arroub refugee camp in Hebron, almost 50 kilometers south of Ramallah. The following day, Saturday May, Israeli forces invaded Nablus, 75 kilometers northeast of Ramallah. 
  • On May 13, Israeli forces intensified their lethal force and invasions on Palestinian cities and towns. On Saturday morning, Israeli forces invaded Nablus, targeting Balata refugee camp and injuring at least two civilians, including one elderly woman, according to the Ministry of Health. By 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, two Palestinians were killed in Nablus. According to the MOH, the two were 32-year-old Saed Jihad Shaker Mashe and 19-year-old Adnan Waseem Yousef al-Araj, both killed in Askar refugee camp near Nablus. Three others were injured with bullets to the neck, stomach, and thigh. With the killing of Mashe and Araj, the death toll of Palestinians killed since the start of 2023 reached 150. By early evening, Israeli forces invaded Jenin and killed 33-year-old Ahmad Mohammad Atatra.
  • For the third consecutive day, Israeli forces continue to enforce a closure on the Palestinian village of Mughayyer, east of Ramallah. Over the weekend, Israeli settlers and military forces assaulted Palestinian villagers and townspeople in villages surrounding Ramallah, including Kufr Malek, Ein Samiya, Mughayyer, Turmusaaya, and Arura, where undercover an Israeli special operations unit arrested Tareq Saleh. Saleh is a student at Birzeit University and has been wanted by Israeli forces for more than a month.

  • It has been 13 days since the killing of hunger striker Khader Adnan and the withholding of his body from his family by Israeli authorities. Adnan’s body remains held captive in Israeli custody. 
  • Since the start of the year, and in the span of 135 days, Israeli forces killed 151 Palestinians, 33 of whom were in Gaza during the latest onslaught last week, and 119 in the West Bank.
  • Since the Unity Uprising of 2021, and up to May 15, 2023, Israel has killed 675 Palestinians. That is almost one Palestinian killed every 36 hours. Of those killed, 142 were children —  20% of all killings within that time period.
