2024 Annual Report

Our Mission

Mondoweiss is an independent website devoted to informing readers about developments in Palestine/Israel and related U.S. foreign politics. We provide news and analysis regarding the struggle for Palestinian human rights unavailable through the mainstream media.

Letter from Yumna Patel, Editor-in-Chief

For more than one year, Israel has carried out an unrelenting genocide in Gaza. The attacks have not stopped and neither has our coverage.

With the support from donors this year, Mondoweiss has continued our crucial reporting from the ground in Palestine and from the United States, where the Palestine movement faced unprecedented repression.

In order to sustain our coverage, we have expanded our capacity and grown our staff, bringing on two new team members. Qassam Muaddi joined as our Palestine Staff Writer. Based in Ramallah, in the West Bank, Qassam brought you the news and critical context behind some of the biggest stories this year. We also welcomed Khader Jabbar into the new position of Digital Director to oversee our video and content productions on social media. Khader is developing original content for major social media platforms where our audience has grown to over 600,000 followers, and generated over 156 million impressions, or views, this year.

We have also continued to strengthen the most critical aspect of our reporting this year: our Gaza coverage. Our Gaza Correspondent, Tareq Hajjaj, continues his reporting from Egypt, working with freelance journalists in Gaza to bring our audience the same standard of honest, on-the-ground reporting and uphold our mission of supporting and platforming Palestinian journalists and voices.

Today, even after more than a year of genocide, when most news outlets have moved on to other stories, our team is still documenting Israeli war crimes, and exposing the corruption and repression in the U.S.

Your investment in our team is what makes this reporting possible. Every story we publish brings us one step closer to accountability and justice.

In 2025, despite the threats to freedom of the press in this country, we are committed to continue telling these stories, no matter the cost. Because the alternative, staying silent, will never be an option.

In solidarity,

Yumna

The year in numbers

Readership

  • Over 4.3 million visitors visited our website.
  • We saw over 7.9 million pageviews (individual pages viewed).
  • Our email newsletters now have over 30,000 subscribers.

Mondoweiss provides reporting from and about Palestine that you cannot find elsewhere. Particularly in times of conflict, people turn to us for vital context. After huge traffic spikes following the October 7, 2023 attacks, and Israel’s genocidal response, our traffic began to gradually lower. This is expected and we anticipate arriving at a higher standard traffic pattern than we experienced prior to the last 15 months.

Social Media Performance

Thanks to the support of our readers, we hired a new Digital Director in March to oversee and grow our presence on social media platforms. We’ve invested in producing original content tailored to the various platforms on which Mondoweiss is active. This effort has paid off with consistent increases in followers, reach, and engagement across social media.

This year also brought increasing fragmentation across social media platforms. Users left X (formerly Twitter) for alternative services such as Mastodon and Bluesky. Mondoweiss was an early adopter of both of these emerging platforms that are built around visions of a decentralized internet with less corporate dominance over social media. Mondoweiss was one of the first independent publications to launch its own Mastodon platform, and our early entry into Bluesky helped us grow our following to over 20,000 when users began to leave X. It is important to meet audiences where they are, and we will continue to explore emerging platforms to communicate across.

Our content on five key platforms—Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok—has been viewed over 156 million times. Here are some highlights from 2023.

Mondoweiss Social Media Impressions in 2024

Last year, we reported 130,000 followers on Instagram. This year, we have grown that to over 200,000 followers, and it continues to expand thanks to original content created specifically for the platform and its unique audience.

X (formerly Twitter) Growth

Despite serious concerns over X’s management and content policies, the platform continues to be a key driver of traffic and engagement for us. Other news publications have made high-profile exits from X this year. We continue to monitor developments on the platform but have determined that we will continue to publish content there for now.

We continued to refine our video production system this year, producing 52 YouTube Shorts, which are vertical videos under three minutes in length, and 50 standard videos, which are either horizontal or longer than three minutes.

Media Engagements

Our journalists work tirelessly to report news that mainstream media ignores and distorts, helping shape a counter-narrative to fight the lies and push for fair coverage. In 2024, Mondoweiss’s work was cited by other media organizations, expanding the reach of our articles, videos, and other publications. Some of the outlets our work was featured in include The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Haaretz, The New York Times, Liberation, and The Baffler, among others. Yumna Patel, our Editor-in-Chief, is a regular guest on Al Jazeera programs, including The Listening Post. Notably, she appeared there to discuss our early reporting on misinformation surrounding accusations of sexual violence on October 7. Staff have been featured in USA Today, The Real News, and on several radio interviews and podcast episodes.

As a movement media organization, we amplify the work of advocacy organizations across the U.S. and around the world. We cover the victories and attacks against Palestine advocacy organizations, including Students for Justice in Palestine, the Palestinian Youth Movement, the Palestinian Feminist Collective, the Palestine Global Mental Health Network, the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights, the BDS Movement, Progressive International, and Jewish Voice for Peace, among many others. Mondoweiss is a platform for the movement to reach new audiences, debate strategy, and access high-quality journalism to fuel its work.

Restructuring for Growth

Mondoweiss has evolved dramatically over the past 18 years. From modest beginnings, it has grown into one of the most respected and widely read independent media outlets focused on Palestine. Through it all, our mission remains unchanged: to deliver principled, high-quality journalism that advances justice in Palestine.

Since October 2023, we have welcomed a surge of new readers seeking trusted information after October 7. To meet the growing demand for our coverage and analysis, Mondoweiss undertook an ambitious staff transition, expanding our team to deliver the in-depth reporting millions have come to rely on.

In what has been a challenging year for our staff and our global community, we also set out to adopt a collaborative leadership model. This approach will guide an invigorated vision for our role in the movement for Palestinian freedom.

It has been four months since we implemented these changes, and our team is already realizing the benefits. Our restructuring has strengthened both our editorial and operations, empowering us to respond with urgency and depth. With the steadfast support of our donors, Mondoweiss’s dedicated team will continue to grow—ensuring that our essential coverage of Palestine and its global implications reaches more people than ever.

Giving Numbers

Mondoweiss is a reader-supported media organization. Eighty percent of our budget comes from individual donors who believe in independent reporting. The remaining twenty percent is funded by Foundations that provide grants for operations.

We’ve built a loyal group of donors over the years, supporters who understand that this struggle is a long-term undertaking. Here are a few top-level insights about Mondoweiss donors:

  • Between January and December 2024, Mondoweiss received donations from 4,441 individual donors, including more than 1,200 recurring gifts.
  • 282 donors have been donating for 10 years or more
  • 592 have been Mondoweiss donors for 5 years or more.

Financials

Mondoweiss’s fiscal year starts on September 1 and ends on August 31. The numbers reported below are from our fiscal year 23-24.

During the fiscal year, Mondoweiss raised $1,435,778. Due to the increased demand for Mondoweiss reporting, the team raised extra funds to sustain daily reports from Gaza and website infrastructure for heightened traffic.

Mondoweiss’ most important asset is its people, 73% of Mondoweiss’s budget was used for personnel costs. This grew from the previous year, as we hired two new positions and increased our freelancers’ budget due to the need to sustain expanded coverage.

Another important financial investment included updating salaries and benefits to better reflect the current standard and adjust for higher living costs.

For the fiscal year 24-25, Mondoweiss had to raise its budget by 17% due to the incorporation of new staff members, salary adjustments, and increased production costs for news reports from Palestine.
