A chance encounter with one of my past students at the Islamic University of Gaza highlighted the paradox of surviving the Gaza genocide: feeling joy in surviving the war and sorrow in witnessing what our survival has cost us.
My beloved mother passed away on December 1, 2023. She was unable to receive the intensive care she needed because Gaza’s hospitals had been rendered unusable. I hold President Joe Biden responsible for her death.
“Palestinians shouldn’t be blamed for not being good victims. Israel’s military aircrafts, tanks, and warships can destroy Palestinians’ houses, but not their homes; their bodies, but not their spirits.”
Dr. Hassan El-Nabih shares a harrowing account of being in his Gaza home when Israel destroyed it on August 23, 2014. He writes, “On that day, I horribly experienced death when an Israeli military aircraft destroyed my house. Fortunately, a miracle happened and I was born again from the rubble of my house.”
