Rabbi David Saperstein exemplifies PEP, progressive except for Palestine. In an hour-long talk, he expressed outrage over ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims, apartheid in South Africa and countries that don’t separate religion and state. But never mentioned Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, the new charges that Israel practices apartheid, and Israel’s law that gives Jews exclusive land and language rights.

Several recent findings that Israel is an apartheid state reflect a mounting international recognition. But the indifference to them in the U.S. is also in a long tradition: ignoring apartheid pronouncements about Israel in the U.S. To accept the finding would create a crisis in the Democratic Party and require support for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, and the Israel lobby including its liberal branch insists that BDS is antisemitic.

In a fiery speech in 1986 then Senator Joe Biden said he would “be on the ramparts” in South Africa if he were a black leader there, and justifed armed resistance to apartheid. “Hell they’ve tried to compromise for twenty years. They’ve tried everything. Everything in their power! And look what’s happened to them. They’re being crushed.”

“I am convinced that the loss of legitimacy of the Zionist idea, of the idea of a special state for a special people, is irreversible, that that cannot be resurrected in the 21st century, a time when we at least preach if not practice universal rights and equality,” the writer Ali Abunimah said in a landmark speech ten years ago, and his remarks have proved to be prophetic in describing the anti-Zionist movement inside progressive life.

Roger Waters on the importance of international solidarity with Palestinians: “The aim … is to focus world attention on the plight of the Palestinian people in Gaza in the hope that the scales will fall from the eyes of all, ordinary, decent people round the world, that they may see the enormity of the crimes that have been committed, and demand that their governments bring all possible pressure to bear on Israel to lift the siege.”
