Authors of Israel Lobby Paper Get Warm Reception at Military College

The reason I went to the Naval War College was to hear Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer, authors of the controversial paper on the Israel lobby, address an audience of officers and experts at the Navy’s 57th annual Current Strategy Forum. It’s remarkable when you think about it. Back in April, Harvard people were saying they were going to have all kinds of forums on the paper—to denounce it, as Hillel director Bernard Steinberg told me. Well, no forums. There’s been an embarrassed silence. And as has been argued here before, that probably stems from the fact that there is strong underground support for the paper’s findings, including its assertion that the disastrous decision to invade Iraq came partly out of pro-Israel pressure. Yes, that’s hard to talk about.

Meanwhile, (as Col. Larry Wilkerson has already indicated) the military is listening.

It was evident to me during my visit that many at the Naval War College were familiar with the paper. By one report, the College came under pressure from an unnamed congressman to cancel the talk, but the College stuck by its cannonballs. And no, Walt and Mearsheimer weren’t there to talk about the lobby—but the subject sure came up. A Lieutenant Commander Wilson rose to ask about the paper, wondering “how the Palestinians can combat the Israelis’ foreign influence in the United States.”

Mearsheimer used the question as an opportunity to say that the United States must not side with Israel on the question of unilateral disengagement from the West Bank.

You’re likely to see a situation in which the Israelis try to impose a settlement on the Palestinians. I think the Israel lobby will work hand-in-hand with the Israelis to push that approach. It think it is not in America’s interest and I think it is not in Israel’s interests. And for that reason, I think the Israel lobby is not good, not only for the United States but for Israel.

After the talk, another lieutenant commander came up to the authors with a bound copy of the paper, and had the authors sign it. Alan Dershowitz’s assertion that the two had “destroyed their professional reputations” was not supported by this event in Rhode Island. When it comes to the strategic military community, they’re doing fine.

Finally the word is getting out thanks to the honesty and integrity of our military. The question is will the media feature and discuss Mearsheimer's and Walt's study in print and on TV or are they still afraid of the "Lobby".

Also when will the citizenry wake up to the fact that US foreign policy is being dictated by individuals with dual loyalties. As Lawrence Davidson in his article"Privatizing Foreign Policy" writes "Thus a general ignorance of outside events leads to the public's dependence on media edited news and “establishment” experts. In the case of foreign policy formulation, the effectiveness of special interests is helped along by the normal indifference the general public shows in events abroad. "(

  2. Hank Silver says:

The Mearshiemer-Walt paper performed an important service in discussing the relationship between the organized American Jewish community (aka Israel Llobby)and Washington decision makers. The fact that the Israel Lobby is attempting to discourage discussion of the issue is testimony to the significance of the Mearsheimer-Walt paper.

  3. Clarence Prince says:

The Israel Lobby, that is, Jewish-Americans fanatically supportive of Israel state policies who have misled America in the Middle East for decades, is trying its best to keep the lid on any open discussion of the Mearsheimer/Walt paper. Loyal Americans will do well to publish it as broadly as possible and at every opportunity.

I wish Weiss had reported the answer given to the Lt. Commander's question about "how the Palestinians can combat the Israelis' foreign influence in the United States." Maybe it wasn't answered, but it is a key question that needs to be engaged if US foreign policy is to return to normal and a healthy relationship with the Arab/Muslim world created.

Israel is held to a standard of perfection (which of course it fails) in Walt's World while thuggish terror-supporting states such as Iran and Syria are presented as potential important allies of America, and are insulated from any criticism by the professors. Israel is demonized by the authors; the surrounding dictatorships, who have sent terrorists to our shores and who are killing our soldiers now, are sanctified.

The professors' attempt to promote the good deeds of Syria in the war on terror is particularly laughable. Syria has opened its border to virtually every jihadist willing to kill Americans in Iraq. It has attempted to undermine every serious peace process between Israel and the Palestinians, or between Israel and its other neighbors since Israel's founding. Syria occupied Lebanon for over 15 years, has treated terrorist groups as proxies for Syria, has been implicated in the assassination of the leader of Lebanon, and has openly served as a conduit for over 10,000 missiles delivered to Hezbollah terrorists in Southern Lebanon who seemingly run their own Islamic terror state within a state.

The professors also cavalierly argue that an Iranian nuclear capability is no threat to America. These experts seem to be unaware that Iran has consistently been ranked as the number one terror state in the world by our State Department (a charge they would probably discount since in their delusional world, the Jews control even the famously anti-Israel State Department). But Shiite Iran, with missiles purchased from North Korea, can reach many of the Sunni Arab states that the authors argue are America's real allies in the region, and also Europe.

Are the professors unaware of the thousand year rivalry between the Shiites and Sunnis in the Islamic world' Are Europe and the Arab states not areas of strategic interest for America' During his presidency, Jimmy Carter enunciated what later became known as the Carter Doctrine: an attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf Region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the United States of America, and such assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including military force.

Thanks for this. It would be invaluable for the cause of human rights in Palestine (and Israel!) were the US military to come out against standard US foreign policy in this area. The potential benefits for the US were it to reverse its policy on Israel/Palestine are so manifest and so massive that only the most blinkered ideologues could fail to recognise and act upon them.

Could not agree more. It is past time for Pro Americans to stand up and take notes. I beleive the current disgrace in Iraq began 8 June 1967 with the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty and the contuining cover up. Check the Liberty site . It is worthwhile research.

Give it a rest, Joey. We've already heard that. And the scam is pretty well blown anyway.

and to think the 'holocaust' as it is called has been the conduit for how us stupid gentiles can allow israel and its jewish cohorts to get away with just about everything…. well someday it will be learned that this event did not occur as we all have been brainwashed to believe – no gas chambers.. maybe 200-300 thousand killed tops from disease and sickness – much less than rwanda…

that means no reason for guilt, no reason for israel..

it all starts with the holocaust over here.. americans have big hearts and feel bad for victims (or those who parade themselves as such) thats the beginning of this incredible conspiracy to control our government and turn us into one large mercenary military fighting for this evil 'democratic' regime… a 'democratic' entity that allows its soldiers to aim the sights of their weapons we GAVE them right at the heads of CHILDREN..

what kind of immoral society can allow such a thing??? and how can we support it???

it all starts with the holocaust… the biggest FRAUD in world history…

thats right joey – go take your insulin injection now as you realize there are many americans that have uncovered this SCAM.

God bless the survivors of the USS Liberty!!!…

  11. Brenda says:

There were about 170 million deaths from war crimes over the course of the 20th century, including the 6 million European Jewish deaths during WW2. There were about 6 million additional civilian deaths in Europe during WW2. That is part of the scam. The State of Israel does not own the holocaust of the 20th century.

The other part of the scam, the truly egregious, truly cynical, is that the State of Israel has for the past 40 years made use of the suffering of the 6 million to cover and excuse Israel's own war crimes against the Palestinians and others.

That Israel became what it has become is one of the big disappointments of my life. It makes one lose hope for the human species. That the United States is partially in thrall to Israeli aspirations in the Middle East is really and truly dangerous for everyone living on this planet. Reading the tired old Israeli propaganda on this thread really made me feel like throwing up.

  12. George says:

Way to go Brenda, maybe there is hope for the US yet. Let's hope more people see through this horrible scam!

  13. skip says:

Usually at a bou this point in the discussion a faux no-nazi pops up to say he and David Duke agree with the lobby study. That is meant to dismiss the argument before it starts.
W&M merely uderscored what is well known in Washington already. All you really needed to do was watch Wolf Blitzer (formerly of the Jerusalem Post) interview Frank Gaffney, Richard Perle, Reul Gerecht and Ken"Cakewalk" Adelman. Quite a "variety of opinion."

  14. joey cavod says:

Where is any claim of Israel "owning the Holocaust" coming from?

Israel is trying to defend itself and follows the Geneva Convention Accords, unlike the USA.

Who dropped two Nuclear Bombs on 100,000 civilians?

The horrible scam is American self-righteousness.

  15. Brenda says:

So which side are you on, Joey?

The United States, my country and yours also (?) has a hard enough time keeping her hands clean these days, and keeping her head above water financially without the added burden of being associated with Israeli war crimes and Israeli goals in the Middle East.

This has gone way, way beyond an intellectual debate. The survival of the United States herself is at stake.

  16. joey cavod says:

I am on America's side the Israel lobby is in the best interest of America. 4/5ths of the money "given" to Israel is spent in the US and a large fraction of that is on joint-technology development projects.

The benefits of the Israel Lobby (having a military ally in the Middle East, a developer of many technologies from which the US has benefited) outweigh the fact that the Palestinians are suffering (in large part because they have been used as pawns by the rest of the corrupt Arab world and by their own corrupt leaders)

Israel's war crimes are infinitesimal in perspective to those of the United States. I keep the reality of the situation in perspective. Not that there is anything OK about any war crime.

The Israel Lobby has helped American businesses and consumers by developing the Israeli economy of dynamic technologists that have delivered the design and production of the most widely used Pentium processor, the unmanned aircraft (UAV), R&D centers for Microsoft, Google, IBM and Intel, the MRI (body scanner), countless pharmaceutical and medical discoveries and ISCAR Tools (Warren Buffet's four billion dollar acquisition).

Americans benefit from the fruits of this lobby. Call it a subsidy to Intel, Google, IBM, Boeing and Berkshire Hathaway. For better or worse, the interests of America are the interests of the Fortune 500 and the Israel lobby serves these interests.

Of course, the goal is peace and prosperity between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel loses more than the Palestinians, in the current status quo. Peace and the inevitable ensuing prosperity is in the best interest of both sides.

The Israelis get no joy in having to aggressively defend themselves against the Palestinians. The Palestinian terror organization are funded by rogue Arab nations, while the peace and prosperity loving Palestinians are held hostage by the situation, along with Israel.
