On Commenters Having Trouble Posting

A lot of people have had trouble posting comments. I apologize, we’re trying to work out the bugs. If you’re ticked about it, email me and I’ll get it on the blog.

Here is something that Richard Silverstein, whose progressive Jewish blog I recommend (Tikun Olam, http://www.richardsilverstein.com) tried to say about the question of Israel talking to Syria.

Responding to the comment: “Let Israel give up the Golan heights when you, Lester, Gene, and the rest of the Hasrallah/Hamas cheering sections move yourself, wives, children, and pets to the foot of the Golan heights, within artillery range.”

No, how ’bout little Bill you move yr loved ones to Beit Hanun & suffer
under IDF bombardment for a few nights to really whet yr appetite for
those uber-Israel views of yours.

And btw, since you seem too ignorant to know otherwise, those Syrian
Golan artillery batteries have been silent for 40 yrs. If Phil followed yr
orders he & his loved would sleep well in their beds knowing that Syria was
maintaining the peace on the Golan border.

OT- Mr weiss can delete this if he wants. something I just wrote:

One argument I hear from the right (whatever that means these days) is something along these lines:

we invaded Iraq to spread democracy across the region. this would help us becuase as the middle east becomes more democatic it will become less violent, the terrorists will be margenalized, and we , in turn, will be safer. we will be preventing terrorism AT IT'S ROOT as opposed to relaying on luck or the CIA to sniff out potential plots.

I call this Middle east NAFTA: as a response to 9/11 we are going to give the middle east these seeds, called democracy, which will grown and spread. your typical iraqi teenager will no longer want to be a terrorist, he'll be working at Starbucks.

Does this remind anyone else of NAFTA? the idea there, created by elites on both sides who stood to gain a massive windfall from it, was that there would BE NO ILLEGAL IMIGRATION PROBLEM if mexico had a booming economy. well, as is obvious to anyone with eyes, the illegal immigration problem has exploded. mexicos economy is stil shit, though the elites on both sides got their money. all in all, mexico lost and amercans didn't get their probelm solved but mulitplied.

In Iraq we see the same thing: the iraq people are certainly not, at least for the time being, any better off and that's being generous. the american people who wanted less terrorism out of this war haven't gotten it. quite the contrary though again, the eiltes on both sides are fabulously rich.

So Why can't we build a fence on the border and punish those whoe hire and in fact purposely import illegal aliens? why can't we pull are forces out of the middle east entirely and / or implement the suggestions of the 9/11 commision? answer: it's unfashionable. globalism is in "nativism" is out. OF COURSE imigration reform as per tancredo and BUchanan would reduce illegal immigration. OF COURSE pulling out of the middle east and implementing actual security measures would make us safer. but if they are tried and are succesful, there goes the whole globalist ball of wax. no more fun for congress and big corporations. No more 5 star hotels in dubai, at least not on the taxpayers dime.

Also, why are we spreading democracy in the middle east as a way of helping our alleged ally Israel? Was China more or less dangerous after it become "open" I think most people would say more. they were harmless when they were starving under Mao's central planning. There are all sorts of muslim societies. some, like say, Iran have modern things like subways, highways and whatnot others like parts of pakistan are quite rural and even what some would call backward. but they have one thing in common: they hate israel and they hate the US. no matter what you add to or take away from any of these societies that remains constant. you could have ten regime changes in iran, you will never find a leader who is both friendly to US hegemony and Israel AND ALSO has legitamacy with the people.

  2. Bill Pearlman says:

    Richard Silverstein:
Ok moron, the reason that border has been quiet is because the Israelis are holding the Golan and there is no Syrian artillery up there. And Israel has listening posts that can monitor movements in Syria. Giving up the Golan changes that whole dynamic and the miliatry balance. That takes real peace and that is most assuredely something that Assad and his mafia is not talking about. And I'd also
like to remind you that the only reason the Syrians were stoped in the Yom Kippur war was because Israel possesed that zone. You put Syria on one side and the Iranians on the other in Lebanon through their proxy hezbollah and that renders Israel northern panhandle untenable. Alond with the possiblity of being blackmailed over water.
Secondly asshole, if the situation was reversed the demonstations in Beit Hanoun wouldn't be taking place. The Arabs would mow down everybody en masse. It's only Jews that would sit still for this. And if you engaged in honest intellectual discourse you would admit that. The analogy your trying to draw is bullshit.
Personally I would invited Assad to Jerusalem right now though, why not, Offer to go to Damascus, why not.. Let Syria have Lebanon and throw in Jordan besides, after all that is the "realist appoach" isn't it.

  3. Joseph Augustus says:

Bill, you are slipping. Why don't you leave out the "moron" and the "asshole" and just respond to Richard Silverstein?
By the way, I know Phil Weiss, and he is not "little." He is 6'2", and in good physical shape. joseph

  4. Bill Pearlman says:

Literary license Joe, small in heart, stature, and integrity would be more on point

  5. Rowan Berkeley says:

More to the point is the fact that in accordance with its usual passive-aggressive geo-strategy, Israel procured the attacks of the Syrian artillery by sending tractors across the cease-fire lines, as the reflexive liar Pearlman presumably knows perfectly well, since such reliable sources as Moshe Dayan have attested to it.

  6. Moe says:

Didn't Moshe Dayan admit (there was an AP to this effect) that he took the Golan Heights, using their strategic importance as a pretext for seizing fertile agrarian property? I.e., Israel wanted the farmland.
