A great book came out last year called To Hate Like This Is to Be Happy Forever, by Will Blythe (yes, a friend), about the undying rivalry between Duke and the University of North Carolina. The rivalry goes way beyond sports. It’s class and culture. Duke the entitled, UNC the downtrodden. And yes it’s racial, too.
I noticed during Nifong’s testimony last week that he went to UNC. Is it possible that the Duke prosecution came out of this ancient and bitter rivalry? He was taking on rich Duke kids on behalf of poor black North Carolinians… Where are our cultural commentators?

Nifong was winning an election, which means pandering to minorities and special interests. Surely you've read *Bonfire of the Vanities*.
Even more than an appeal to the downtrodden blacks of Durham, Nifong's strategy was to tap into the endless well of white guilt, and also open up its tributary, known variously as "tolerance" or "civil rights" or "racial justice". This, viewed correctly, is the new BMW, the Rolex among the elite whites who take a bit of PBS with their ET. It's the way they separate themselves now, and they have Hollywood and the infotainment media (which is owned by the Presybterians, you know) to lean on as their guide.
"Tolerance" advocates loudly and publicly love The Negro more 'n' better than their lower class relatives. Those poor souls scrabbling to climb up one more rung on the class ladder quickly buy in, proudly sending their daughters off with Lemaricus and spouting misbegotten interpretations of Galatians 3:28 to all. The one-upsmanship is a remarkable thing to see, and it recently culminated in the Nifong bandwagon.
Don't worry- there'll be another Proud Cause to ride soon enough. The Battle Hymn of the Republic will blare out in satanic Unitarian rhythm, and the Tolerant Ones will find new ways to look down on their lessers. And they'll ignore the truth, because it hinders their narcissistic climb towards status.

Off and on I read the coverage of the Duke rape charges in the Boston Globe — not the best paper I admit.
I was generally amazed at the behavior of the prosecution. I have to wonder if the issue might have been jock culture. After all, jocks are supposed to behave the way the charges allege. So what if there is no evidence.
Nifong probably thought that if he pressed hard enough, the defendants would crack and confess.
Unfortunately, in this case the jocks were innocent.
In that interpretation the case does remind me a little of the Neocon case for the attack on Iraq, and I guess we could take it as a parable for the downfall of individuals or groups that believe they know the truth despite or without the facts.
A Boston Globe acquaintance described to me one of Bill Kristol's classes at Harvard last year. When it comes to Arabs, Muslims and the Middle East, Kristol teaches more or less as Nifong prosecutes.

Phil, I'm obligated to respond to this one because I spent 2 years in grad school at UNC and took a couple of courses up the road at Duke. That rivalry is so bitter that Nifong may well have held subconcious biases against Duke athletes, especially considering their perennial success on the lacrosse field against UNC.
But commentor cooper above has it mostly right– Nifong was bent on winning an election and knew that winning the black vote in Durham along with a healthy percentage of liberal whites almost always guarantees victory in that town.
Durham is a city of immense contrasts. It was virtually built by tobacco industry barons starting in the late 1800's — chief among them being James Buchanon "Buck" Duke, whose family perfected and patented the mass-producing cigarette roller that made him one of the richest men in America by the 1920's. But despite that labor-saving device, tobacco was still a very labor intensive industry, and most of its laborers were blacks who were glad to leave the poverty of sharecropping and tenant farming for a steady working wage in the city.
The prevalence of working blacks soon brought in a number of successful black-owned business. Indeed, the South's largest black-owned insurance company and banking business both started up in Durham in the early 1900's. Economic power soon led to political power, making Durham one of the South's earliest bastions of black political leadership, continuing to this day.
Meanwhile, Buck Duke focused more and on his legacy as he aged and grew richer, thinking of ways to keep his name living long after he was gone. He bought an electric power company known today as Duke Energy. He also became very interested in the beauty and reputation of Princeton University in his new home of New Jersey, so much that he offered that institution many millions if it were to change its name to his name of Duke. But the Princeton trustees weren't going to sell its name at any price, so Buck Duke took his money back to his hometown to build his "Princeton of the South" and name it for himself.
Anyone who visits both Duke and Princeton campuses will marvel at the similarities in architecture. Duke took on so many characteristics of the Ivy League that today most of its students are from northern prep schools. It has always been considered an island to itself, reviled by most North Carolinians.
Yep, I'd say Nifong had some latent psychological biases that came into play along with his highly flawed political ambitions. He was not the first politician to be taken down by blind ambition, and certainly will not be the last…
