Magazine’s Israelis-in-Bikinis Shoot Underwritten by Israeli Gov’t, Lobby

by Philip Weiss on June 20, 2007 · 18 comments

The New York Post says that the pictorial of Israeli babes in Maxim was "encouraged" by the Israeli consulate in New York. A Globe and Mail article posted by Israel21c, a lobbying organization,  is blunter: Maxim’s expenses for the April junket were paid for by Israeli groups and the Israeli government.

"We want to show them that Israel is not a one-dimensional place of just wars and politics and conflicts," said David Brinn, editorial director of Israel 21c, an organization that lobbies journalists, usually at more austere publications than Maxim, to write non-conflict stories about the country.

Mr. Brinn said that his organization, along with the American-Israel Friendship League and the Israeli Foreign Ministry, would subsidize "all [Maxim's] expenses" while the magazine was in Israel, including flights, hotel rooms, a bus and a tour guide.

This kind of thing goes on all the time. And I remember when Alex Cockburn lost his job at the Village Voice because he had gotten some grant from an Arab friendship organization…

"And I remember when Alex Cockburn lost his job at the Village Voice because he had gotten some grant from an Arab friendship organization."

Was that the one where he shot all those photos of the Arab women laying out in their burkhas?

Scandalous indeed.

btw Joachim – If that woman is a representative of ashkenazi invader jews, where do I sign up to have my country invaded?

Hebrewhaha

"Two weeks ago, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni hosted a conference where she launched a new multi-million dollar project to "rebrand" Israel. … According to research conducted by a number of public relations firms, Israel’s international image is one of a war-torn society riddled with religious fanatics and intolerance.

"She has hired a whole host of public relations firms who have conducted focus groups and used other mass marketing tools to figure out how to reinvent Israel in a manner that will make people like it.

"To this end, they plan to move the emphasis of Israel’s public diplomacy from defending Israel in its bid to defend itself against its neighbors who seek its destruction to promoting Israel as a "fun" country. They will market Israel as a libertine country replete with beautiful beaches, beautiful women, wild nightlife and a large, dynamic and booming hi-tech economy.

"As Livni’s adviser Ido Aharoni explained to reporters, "Israel is not perceived as fun or normal. Our job is to say, ‘Yes, we are not normal, but we are far more normal than you think.’ "

Come on Phil, I know your married, probably for a while, but your not dead. You can't not be impressed here. BTW lets have competing photo shoots. Girls of the IDF vs. the babes of Hamas. Internet vote maybe?

One other note, I don't know the Cockburn details but it strikes me that there is a qualitative difference between whats supposed to be political commentary and news and Maxim, ( a great publication by the way ) Although in a world where the association of British journalists has freaking vote about their baias and comes out pro-palestinian, well, who knows

That settles it. I shall no longer regard Maxim as a serious newsmagazine. (Take heed, Details.)

"Yes, we are not normal, but we are far more normal than you think."

The problem with this tactic is that if they push the "normalcy" theme too far, they're going to lose the support of folks like Richard Witty.

David, are you gay, ( not that there's anything wrong with it )

Zionists have long used multi-tier, viral and guerilla marketing to sell their product.

Sex sells, and when one is trying to create a positive image of something so ugly as Zionism, a pretty gal in a bikini is not a bad idea in today's marketplace of ideas.

Stanislawski has documented the use of homoerotic images during the 20s and 30s. Such imagery was common in other fascist and ethnic fundamentalist movements of the time period.

Recently (in 2003) college Zionists distributed Zionist-message condoms.

The Israeli government commission Uris to write Exodus and has been long involved in funding and distribution pro-Zionist, Arabophobic and Islamophobic film.

Jack Shaheen has extensively documented Arabophobia and Islamophobia in US film but has been much too circumspect in identifying the critical role that Zionist fanaticism and ethnic Ashkenazi racism has played in such demonization.

Boy Joechem, dinner at your house, up on the planet klingon, must be a barrel of laughs. What's the story, did some Jewish kid kill your pet cockroach when you were a kid.

"Girls of the IDF vs. the babes of Hamas."

Por Bill, placing his dick between the Hamas and the Evil.

Sorry, I mean "the Hammer and the Anvil."

Didn't quite get that witty slashing rhetorical wit my man. Pray, enlighten me has to your point

Sorry, Bill, I shouldn't have forgotten you are a paranoid. Relax, the hammer thing was just an innocent rhyme. My point is you have bad taste.

At least the Israeli govt is exploiting their own women in the relatively tame Maxim. The history of smut in America was and currently is a Jewish business specialty.

I wonder if the IDF will resort to a previous tactic of theirs in Gaza where they shut down the TV stations and the only shows available on the tube were hard core porn. A nasty form of Psychologic warfare.

14 Seamus June 20, 2007 at 11:12 pm

Free porn from the IDF. Where do I sign up?

Seriously – How much better would the Middle East be if those young Muslim boys were able to funnel some of their energy into having sex with their fellow girl and boyfriends? Rather than blowing themselves up for the chance to sex up 72 virgins they might just try blowing or getting blown by some of their compatriots. After viewing the photo of the young Hebrew maiden I'm sure they'd like to detonate themselves inside those nice Jewish girls.

You know, queen Rania from Jordan is definitely a babe, but on the whole Arab women seem pretty grotesque. Hard to figure how they have 22 kids a piece. Is it the hijab. the Burkha, very curious.

Please Bill – shut up. Your last comment was obnoxious and not true. Ever been to Lebanon?

-A fellow Jew

17 Bill Pearlman June 21, 2007 at 9:08 am

Actually no, being Jewish I never thought that straying into Hezbollah land without a machine gun was a good idea. Anyway though, hot girls in Lebanon, works for me

The Israeli PR campaign smacks of "Cool Britannia" and the Spice Girls (remember them?)

Israel is promoting tourism, but they're still squandering scarce water on waterhog agriculture. The Dead Sea is falling three feet every year now, and Israeli tourist spas that once fronted it have to use motor-trams to get the tourists TO it. Sinkholes suddenly appear while you're walking. They're thinking of digging a canal from the Gulf of Aqaba as a last, best hope.
