You Can’t Be Free….On Route 443!

Only in Ha'aretz:

[L]ast Friday, [Mustafa] Barghouti, with hundreds of Palestinian activists and a hundred Israelis, took part in a demonstration against Road 443, which is blocked to Palestinians.

Did you know about Road 443? Should you? Why isn't it in your newspaper?

Oh My God! There's a road in a military occupied zone that some people aren't allowed to drive on? It's Treblinka I tell you! No, worse than that! In Treblinka they just starved and murdered people, in Israel they are making people take THE LONGER ROUTE! When oh when will our media stop whining about "genocide" in Africa and address this silent superhighway of passive discrimination!

  8. I know when routes such as this were brought up, it was claimed that there was no such thing as "Jews Only Roads." Would the the correct terminology then be "Palestinian Restricted Roads?"

  9. zed says:

Yup, all the Palestinians have to complain about is a "longer route". What whiners. Kind of like those Polish Jews in World War II carping about their lovely "gated community" in the Warsaw Ghetto. Losers.

    …..
If I ever start to wonder how people can let horrible things happen to their fellow human beings, all I have to do is listen to the likes of you and those like you who justify and belittle; who totally fail to comprehend what others face and yet seem to be proud somehow of that lack of comprehension and compassion.

Your absolultely right Zed. No shortage of that sort of thing. True for Jews and non-Jews.

"Kind of like those Polish Jews in World War II carping about their lovely "gated community" in the Warsaw Ghetto. Losers."

I couldn't agree with you more. The suffering of the Palestinians is the West Back matches, if not exceeds, the suffering of Jews during the so-called Holocaust. The Jews know this, and their shame causes them to repeatedly deny it.

  12. Burrell says:

The mother of Princess Diana called her a 'whore' for dating Muslim men, her inquest has heard.

Frances Shand Kydd made the 'disgraceful' comment when she discovered her daughter was in a serious relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan.

The pair did not speak again before Diana died two months later, according to her butler Paul Burrell.

The sensational revelation came on the day that he told how:

    • Diana was planning to marry Dr Khan;

    • Her romance with Dodi Fayed was just a '30-day' fling;

    • Prince Philip did write 'cutting' letters to the princess but would not have ordered her murder;

    • The Queen warned him of mysterious 'powers at work' – but he had no idea what she meant.

The 49-year-old former butler revealed that Diana's bitter conversation with her mother happened in June 1997, during the last throes of her relationship with Dr Khan and just two months before she and Dodi died in Paris.

Mr Burrell told the High Court that the princess had held up the phone as they sat together on the sofa of her Kensington Palace apartment so that he could hear her mother's rant.

He said Mrs Shand Kydd, who died in 2004, was a 'formidable lady' who often expressed herself 'in extremely forceful terms about Diana's consorts, especially if they were Muslim'.

Asked to describe what he had heard on that particular day, he hesitated.

It was only when the coroner, Lord Justice Scott Baker, interjected, saying: 'This is relevant', that Mr Burrell replied: 'Well, she called the princess a whore and she said that she was messing around with f****** Muslim men and she was disgraceful. She said some very nasty things.'

Mohamed Al Fayed's barrister, Michael Mansfield, asked: 'It was shortly after one of these telephone calls that the princess decided she did not want to talk to her mother again?'

    'Yes,' Mr Burrell confirmed.

  15. Utopian says:

WETZLAR, Germany — A brutal war of words has broken out between the two major parties here over violence committed by youths with immigrant backgrounds, and neither side is backing down.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has found herself straddling the divide, caught between her contradictory roles as party leader during a heated regional election campaign and as the head of a delicate coalition government.

The controversy began suddenly in late December, when a 20-year-old Turk and a 17-year-old Greek were caught on videotape severely beating a 76-year-old retiree in the Munich subway. The pensioner’s skull was fractured in the attack, which shocked the nation. Far from a brief flare-up, the political battle over crime, punishment and ethnicity has only intensified since.

Germany has its difficulties with its immigrant residents, of which Turks are the largest group, but nothing like the kind of raw conflict seen in other European countries, particularly France. Germany’s Nazi past, and, as a result, the pains that mainstream politicians here usually take to avoid even the appearance of overt nationalist sentiment, have tended to keep a lid on the kind of debate pursued more openly by far-right parties elsewhere on the Continent.

Yet there are signs that could be changing. Roland Koch, a Christian Democrat and the premier in the state of Hesse, home to Frankfurt, seized on the Munich attack as an opportunity to push for tougher penalties for juvenile immigrants who commit crimes. Voters in Hesse and Lower Saxony go to the polls on Jan. 27 in closely watched races for their state parliaments, with Hamburg following in February.

At an election rally here on Sunday before thousands of supporters, Mr. Koch made the typical candidate’s speech, touching on roads and schools, chances missed by his Social Democratic predecessors and the successes of his own government. The loudest cheers came when he turned to his theme of law and order.

“Anyone who raises their fist in this country will experience the combined resistance of the entire civil society of this republic,” Mr. Koch said. His position struck a chord with Christian Democratic voters.

Herbert Thiel, 66, who had come from the Hessian town of Eschborn for the rally, said, “The others, their politics are all illusion and utopia, as if all people are the same.” He said that safety was the most important issue in the campaign. Privately, everyone discusses the problem, he said, but not talking about immigrant crime in public “is an unwritten rule.”

Mr. Thiel was far from alone in his thinking at the campaign stop in Wetzlar, where a majority of those who were asked said fighting crime was the top priority. The question for Mr. Koch on election day will be how important the undecided voters think the issue is. The Social Democrats are campaigning on instituting a national minimum wage, also a popular and highly emotional issue here.

At stake in the election is control of the three state governments, as well as their seats in the upper house of the federal Parliament. But beyond the short-term political tussle lies the question of long-term damage to the country’s halting attempts to integrate its newcomers, many of whom were born here but are still viewed as outside society’s mainstream.

Politically, the Christian Democrats have everything to lose, since they already control all three governments. Even if they manage to maintain control, simply losing seats would likely be interpreted as a sign of weakness, as the campaign for the next national elections in 2009 already looms large. Mrs. Merkel hopes to win a large enough share of votes to break up the marriage of convenience with the Social Democrats known as the “grand coalition.”

She struck a more measured tone when she spoke at the rally after Mr. Koch. “Violence in this country, whoever is responsible, is not acceptable,” Mrs. Merkel said. She asked for a discussion “in all calmness” with the Social Democrats.

When the debate first flared up, Mrs. Merkel seemed to steer clear of the controversy. Then a few days later she stepped up to support Mr. Koch. “It cannot be that a minority in this country creates fear in the majority,” she said, leaving wiggle room as to whether she was referring to immigrant youth specifically or to young people generally.

Mrs. Merkel pointed to the high share — 43 percent — of violent crimes committed by those under 21, and the fact that close to half of those were by what she called “foreign youths.”

Critics argue that the problem lies in disproportionately disadvantaged backgrounds, and that poor German youths are as likely to commit crimes as poor Turks or Russians. Statistics show that juvenile crime rates fell in 2007 from the prior year, but the debate has been more rhetorical than statistical.

Immigrant groups, Germany’s Jewish community and in particular the rival Social Democrats have called Mr. Koch a populist xenophobe and worse. Peter Struck, parliamentary floor leader for the Social Democrats, went so far as to accuse Mr. Koch of being “glad at heart” that the Munich subway attack had happened, a charge Mr. Koch denied.

Critics say the racial overtones cross the line. A campaign poster in Bavaria showed a still image from a surveillance video of the attack, in which the one attacker in the frame is a black silhouette. The victim’s image is cut out, making him a pure white shape. Where he slumps on the ground are written the words, “So that you are not the next.”

  17. Jerry Fletcher says:

First I'd like to say thank you to Richard Cohen for writing this piece. It takes balls to write this especially since Cohen actually likes Obama. I plan to vote for Obama myself, but I too need to see who he really is. This story has been floating around the internet for a while now, but no one in the media has been willing to touch it.

    Here is the big question:
This award to Farrakhan was made very recently. We are not talking about something that happened years ago – they did this last year – WHEN OBAMA WAS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. Wright HAD to know that this was going to hurt Obama. Farrakhan is a total kook in addition to being an anti-semite and racist against whites. He is the one person that Christians, Jews, and traditional Muslims can all agree is real nutjob. If you don't believe me then read what the Nation of Islam actually believes. It's really kooky.

My point is that someone in Wright's camp doesn't want Obama to succeed, and this is the classic crab pulling the other crab down back into the bucket. On some level Wright is either pissed off at Obama and doesn't want him to win, or wants to make himself a martyr by forcing Obama to disown him.

Think about it – If Wright can force Obama to disown him and then claim he is a victim of political correctness or Jews forcing Obama to tow a certain line, then his stature amongst a certain group grows considerably. Obama gets to have his Sister Souljah moment and Wright makes out pretty well.

    Seriously. Think about it.
Why would Trumpet do this at this time? Why not wait to give Farrakhan the award next year after the election?

There is another story here folks.

    Red meat for Joachim

A U.S. historian has threatened to publicly reveal alleged Polish atrocities against Jews in the aftermath of World War II, if the Polish State Prosecution tries him for "insulting the nation."

The Polish State Prosecution said last week that it would consider pressing charges against historian Jan Tomasz Gross for "insulting the nation" in his book "Fear: Anti-Semitism in Poland after Auschwitz."

In his book, Gross covers the Kielce pogrom and other instances of post-war violence perpetrated by Poles against Jews. A Polish translation of the book came out last week sparking the current row.

"If they will take me to court, I will bring witnesses, Jews and Poles, to say exactly what happened [in Poland] after the war," Gross said Monday by phone. "It will be a big scandal."

Gross said that the Polish prosecution was prompted by articles published in the media accusing him of tarnishing the country's reputation.

According to a Polish law passed two years ago, anyone found guilty of accusing the Polish nation of cooperating with Nazi or Communist war crimes can be imprisoned for a maximum of three years in jail. The legality of the law is currently being debated in the country's high court and is expected to be rescinded, Gross said.

"I expect that the prosecutor general will give up the prosecution," Gross said. "I am confident nothing will come out of this. But if they do, there will be a big scandal. The book is not a slander; it is a description of a period. There are people in Poland who are already willing to deal with this subject, and there are people who don't. There is a debate now, and I hope it continues. Only that it will be a substantial debate".

The Kielce pogrom occurred July 4, 1946, when a mob including policemen in uniform attacked a group of Jewish refugees taking shelter in a building in the center of town. Some 27 Jews of the 200 that had been in the building were killed. The incident began when a child who had gone missing told police that he was kidnapped by Jews.

Gross, 61, is a Polish-Born U.S. citizen who has taught at Yale, NYU and Princeton. His books have dealt primarily with anti-Semitic incidents during and after World War II. In one of his best known books, "Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne, Poland," Gross argues that the Jewish population of the village was massacred by its Polish neighbors, and not by the Germans as previously believed.

So much for the “last resort”
    08Jan08

Confirmation that Israel rejected numerous opportunities to end the confrontation with Hizbullah in favour of an all-out war on Lebanon:

“Israel missed a reasonable opportunity for a cease-fire with Hezbollah during the first week of the Second Lebanon War, which could have included transferring kidnapped Israeli reservists Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev to the Lebanese government, according to senior Israeli and United Nations officials who were involved in the indirect talks.

The deal offered to Israel between July 16 and 18, 2006, would have at least enabled Israel to ascertain the soldiers’ condition, which remains unknown.

According to the mediators, the Israeli leadership played a key role in botching that opportunity, which led to an escalation of the war with Hezbollah…

UN diplomats claim that at the time, Hezbollah did not rule out transfering Goldwasser and Regev to Siniora. Israel Defense Forces officers now confirm that the possibility had been up for discussion, and that Hezbollah might have agreed to it. However, when the UN envoys tried to advance the proposal, it was made clear to them in Jerusalem that the hostages were no longer top priority…

UN envoy to Lebanon Geir Pedersen had met with Hezbollah leaders, and reported that the organization would agree to the emerging deal, including transfering the hostages to Siniora.

Pedersen stressed that Hezbollah wanted an immediate cease-fire, and that at a later stage, they would ask that in return for the soldiers’ transfer to Israel, Israel release only the three Lebanese prisoners and not include Palestinian prisoners in the deal…

“At the height of the pressure, Nasrallah agreed to transfer the kidnapped soldiers to Siniora, but the mechanism for arranging this was not found,” one officer said.

Said a UN official, “We saw that Hezbollah was interested in a cease-fire, but the attitude we encountered in Jerusalem was: ‘Forget it. We’re going to win.’ It was a once-only chance to end the war, under better terms for Israel.” Senior IDF officers have provided support for the UN’s version, stating that at every situation assessment between July 16 and 18, they said Hezbollah was ready for a cease-fire.”

As a recent Ha’aretz editorial so accurately put it, there can be no doubt that “Israel initiated the war“.
