navel-gazing while Rome burns

I don't understand how anyone can write a long article about a Jewish monologuist doing a long piece on Jewish identity, in January 2009, with a picture of Golda Meir as one of his touchstones, and hte usual anguish about his place in American society, without bringing up Israel and the Gaza massacres. It's like this Dialogue book last year called The Faith Between Us by a Jew and a Catholic. I don't think they talk about pedophilia or occupation for one second.                        (Phil Weiss, with thanks to Mohammad)

  1. We are supposed to find all the bitter convolutions of "jewish identity" fascinating, Phil, we nonjews, because after all we don't have such complex, finely-tuned personalities as you do.

  2. Mohammad says:

It is astonishing that so many articles about "jewish Identity" ends up giving the readers so little about that identity. Essentially this article is not about jewish identity, but rather about how jews talk about that identity.

Golda Meir's name and image is an abstract sign symbolizing the supposedly inseparable link between Israel and the Jewish identity. Mentioning of the Golda Meir is the minimum commentary about Gaza in the piece.

Golda Meir, now there's a beauty, inside and out. A USA patriot of the first quality.
