The Jerusalem Post has picked up on the Hampshire divestment movement and reports that:
A pro-Palestinian student group at Hampshire College in western Massachusetts irked the college administration by disseminating a message on-line Thursday congratulating the school for becoming the first US college to divest from companies benefitting the "Israeli occupation of Palestine." . . .
An SJP statement insisted the group had "pressured Hampshire College's Board of Trustees to divest from six specific companies due to human rights concerns in occupied Palestine. Over 800 students, professors and alumni have signed SJP's 'institutional statement' calling for the divestment."
The College disputes this assertion, saying they are not divesting from Israel per se, but because the six companies in question "violate the college's policy on socially responsible investments." When pressed they admitted that the decision to divest was "based on a complaint by Students for Justice in Palestine about six companies doing business in Israel." Enough said.
Hampshire also sent this explanation out the alumni today:

Subject: Hampshire College Board of Trustees investment decisions of February 7, 2009Dear alums, parents, and friends,
There has been some inaccurate publicity surrounding an investment decision made by the board of trustees on February 7, 2009. In anticipation of questions you may have, I send the following statement to explain what actually took place:
Statement of Clarification from Sigmund Roos 73F, chair of the board of trustees, Ralph Hexter, president, and Aaron Berman, vice president and dean of faculty, regarding trustees’ actions on college investments
We write to correct numerous reports circulating about actions taken by the Hampshire College board of trustees on February 7, 2009. The facts are as follows:
• On February 7, 2009, the Hampshire College board of trustees accepted the report of its investment committee, which earlier had voted, without reference to any country or political movement, to transfer assets held in a State Street fund to another fund.
• Based on a comprehensive review of the fund by the trustee investment committee, administrators and an outside consultant, the college found that this fund held stocks in well over 100 companies engaged in business practices that violate the college’s policy on socially responsible investments. These violations include: unfair labor practices, environmental abuse, military weapons manufacturing, and unsafe workplace settings.
• The review also led the board of trustees to vote to revise its 1994 socially responsible investment policy to bring it up-to-date with current standards and practices, and, pending revision, to suspend that policy.
• The review of the State Street fund was undertaken at the request of a sub-committee of the investment committee, to address a petition from a student group, Students for Justice in Palestine. The investment committee’s decision, however, was based on the consultant’s finding that the State Street fund included 100-plus companies engaged in multiple violations of the college’s investment policy; the decision expressly did not pertain to a political movement or single out businesses active in a specific region or country.
• No other report or interpretation of the actions of February 7, 2009 by the Hampshire College board of trustees is accurate.
The short version is that while Hampshire apparently did not divest only from the Israeli occupation, they did find that they wanted to be sure they were not invested in companies benefiting from the occupation. Sounds like divestment to me. (Adam Horowitz)

What a perfect metaphor for the current situation in America: the rank and file want to get Israel off of perpetual American welfare while the suits at the top are scared to death of rich Jewish Zionists withholding money or threatening them with accusations of anti-Semitism, so they wring their hands and hem and haw. It's also a perfect metaphor for how corrupt and spineless America's "elite" have truly become: effete, greedy, cowardly. The very definition of servile.
That's not enough said. Not at all. This needs to be clarified, and the obvious reason for the divestment needs to be publicized. There are plenty of schools all over the country who engage in divestment because "the companies in question violate the college's policy on socially responsible investments." That's obviously a worthy endeavor, but it is important that a specific divestment is tied directly to Israel's illegal occupation, so that other schools will follow suit. This is how momentum builds.
Unless the SJP admits that it went to the board and asked them to investigate these companies due to "social irresponsibility" and nothing else, then this clearly is a case of the board giving in to pressure.
Obviously, the SJP, a group specifically committed to publicizing Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine and helping the Palestinians, went to the board because these companies are complicit in Israel's illegal actions, not because they are generally "socially irresponsible."
By all appearances, the board agreed with SJP's assertion regarding Israel and acted on it. The inevitable barrage of complaints came from Israel's advocates (those who support an illegal occupation and Israeli barbarity), and the board backed down. Typical. And unacceptable.
The review of the State Street fund was undertaken at the request of a sub-committee of the investment committee, to address a petition from a student group, Students for Justice in Palestine. The investment committee’s decision, however, was based on the consultant’s finding that the State Street fund included 100-plus companies engaged in multiple violations of the college’s investment policy; the decision expressly did not pertain to a political movement or single out businesses active in a specific region or country.
Not until the complaints the came in. As Ed said, spineless. Absolutely spineless.
A "sub-committee of the investment committee" is who addressed the SJP's petition? Could they have distanced themselves any further from the humanitarian group, while getting right back into bed with the wealthy Zionists and their supporters? Ridiculous.
Next it will be "a sub-committee of the sub-committee of the investment committee."
Hampshire College also puts its frats on "double secret probation."
Here's a little tidbit that might give the Hampshire College suits a bit of spine: even Starbucks, run by Jewish Zionist Howard Schultz, is shunning "disheartening" rumors of its ties to Israel

Facts about Starbucks in the Middle East
It is disheartening that calls for boycotts of Starbucks stores and products, which are based on blatant untruths, have had direct impacts on local economies and residents, and have also led to violent situations involving our stores, partners (employees) and customers.
Our more than 160,000 partners and business associates around the globe have diverse views about a wide range of topics. Regardless of that spectrum of belief, Starbucks Coffee Company remains a non-political organization. We do not support any political or religious cause. Further, allegations that Starbucks provides financial support to the Israeli government and/or the Israeli Army in any way are unequivocally false. Unfortunately, these rumors persist despite our best efforts to refute them…
Myths
Is it true that Starbucks provides financial support to Israel?
No. This is absolutely untrue. Rumors that Starbucks Coffee Company provides financial support to the Israeli government and/or the Israeli Army are unequivocally false. Starbucks is a publicly held company and as such, is required to disclose any corporate giving each year through a proxy statement. In addition, articles in the London Telegraph (U.K.), New Straits Times (Malaysia), and Spiked (online) provide an outside perspective on these false rumors.
Has Starbucks ever sent any of its profits to the Israeli government and/or Israeli army?
No. This is absolutely untrue.
Is it true that Starbucks is teaming with other American corporations to send their last several weeks of profits to the Israeli government and/or the Israeli Army?
No. This is absolutely untrue.
Is it true that Starbucks closed its stores in Israel for political reasons?
No. We do not make business decisions based on political issues. We decided to dissolve our partnership in Israel in 2003 due to the on-going operational challenges that we experienced in that market. After many months of discussion with our partner we came to this amicable decision. While this was a difficult decision for both companies, we believe it remains the right decision for our businesses.
Anybody who divests and doesn't come right out and admit it is a coward of the worst kind.
what a bunch of wimps.
For once I agree with you, Suzanne!
@Phil.
Wow, Phil, you really are a pathological liar, aren't you? You are willing to lie and put up proof that you are lying all on the same page.
The college said nothing at all about the social responsibility of investing in Israel. They said nothing about the social responsibility of the six companies that the anti-Semites, terrorist supporters, and useful idiots asked them to divest from.
What they said was that the big fund that they had their money in had money invested in 100 companies (not identified), that have various violations of their investment policies. None of the examples they gave of violations of their investment policies have anything to do with Israel.
This story is equivalent to a crazy cat lady telling the cops that her next door neighbor has been murdered. The police show up, no murder, but they do find a huge pot farm. Think they won't arrest the pot farmers just because the initial reason they investigated was bogus?
The college humored these whiny idiots who called for a divestment enough to look into their investment fund. When they looked, they found violations that had nothing to do with whether investing in companies that do business with Israel is socially responsible.
Of course, they are morons for A) not realizing how it was going to look if they moved the money after the complaint, B) making it clear from the outset that it had nothing to do with Israel, and C) not finding a new place for their money before announcing it. Now whether they invest in a fund that has no companies connected to Israel, or a fund that has companies connected to Israel, they are going to look like they are pandering to somebody.
Thom–I think it was Adam Horowitz who submitted this story.
And yes, I agree…they look like they are pandering.
I sent them an email to that effect. I told them the anti-Semitic nutballs are suggesting they were pressured by JOOOOS. (In case they don't have a clue how offensive their mamby pamby milktoast behavior is)
Caterpillar is one of the companies on the divestment list. A Caterpillar dozer was the heavy weapon that murdered brave and great American Rachael
Corrie. In June for the 6th straight year, there will be protests inside and outside Caterpillar's annual shareholder meeting, wherein a resolution will be put fourth to stop sales of those big bad dozers to Israel. Yep, that's Israel, where a pimply teenaged IDF kid can demolish an Arab home at whim, e.g., as the Breaking The Silence IDF vets tell us, simply because the home is painted yellow and the
prick doesn't like yellow. SOP–right from the top out of the mouth of hi Israeli policy makers straight into the IDF kid's ear.
PSC press release on divestment in companies profiting from the occupation
Friday February 13, 2009 – 01:19
Over this past weekend, 7th and 8th of February, the Church of England clarified their position on their investments in companies profiting from the illegally occupied Palestinian territories and now wish to make clear that late last year they removed over £2.2 million in Caterpillar, a company whose bulldozers and heavy plant equipment are been used to destroy the homes of Palestinians by the Israeli government.
I understand that Caterpillar was cleared of the accidental death of the American terrorist, Corrie, who is often pictured as the flag burning supporter of Islamic Fascism.
Corrie, a past winner of the Darwin award, was playing chicken with a bulldozer. The dozer did not notice the insignificant Corrie. The rest of the world is now saying, "Corrie who?"
But the mighty chris berel will be remembered for many, many minutes after his death. At least by his family. One hopes.
As usual, chris, your understanding is retarded and slanted. You know this so you revert to slandering the name of Rachel Corrie and calling her death an accident when you were not there. Caterpillar was not cleared of anything. The case would would have been rejected in the lower court on basis of summary judgement otherwise. On September 17, 2007, the Ninth Circuit affirmed the lower court's dismissal on political question grounds only, and therefore never reached the suit's claim merits. The appeals court found that because the bulldozers were paid for by the U.S. Government as part of its aid to Israel, that the Judicial Branch could not rule on the merits of the case without ruling on whether or not the government's financing of such bulldozers was appropriate, a matter not entrusted to the Judicial Branch.
Flag burning remains a traditional world method of non-violent protest, as it was during the Vietnam war in the USA. Although I am a U.S. Army veteran, I view it as protected free speech. The worst that can be said about such a tactic is that it is a double-edged sword in terms of
sending a message.
Only in your own cranium has "the rest of the world" forgotten Rachael.
Rachael's case was also taken to Congress, where it was promptly buried, and the MSM ignored this travesty to justice and the USA's best
interest. So what's new? Congress did the same with the USS Liberty case. Similarly, the AIPAC spy case keeps getting buried, all three branches of government plus the Fourth Estate work together to keep the tail wagging the dog. Americans who are complicit in this are traitors.
I'm glad Dershowitz made a huge stink about this and brought it to public attention.
The country is sound asleep when it comes to awareness of the political activities on college campuses. It's a breeding ground for young, impressionable minds.
We're living in some odd times right now, so I wouldn't get complacent.
Further, chris, Rachel's words and vision were brought to life by an award-winning London play based on her writings called My Name is Rachel Corrie. Rachel was silenced again when the New York production of the play scheduled to open March 22 was "postponed" indefinitely due to Israel Lobby activated political pressure.
PS: For anyone who chances on this blog as distinguished from the regular commenters who already know, please google "USS Liberty."
Pay attention to how abnormally short the investigation was, how the crew survivors were muzzled, and the latest Chicago Tribune article
on the case. Americans died from an attack on a USS ship & they were written off as expendable by our government–the only time this has happened in our entire USA history.
It's been downhill ever since.
I'm glad Dershowitz did too–it will make the sleeping public more aware of what it is enabling Israel to do. Not in our name!
citizen–take your anti-paranoid pills.
That play bombed because a)it was poorly written
and
b) there was no market for it.
P.s. You can stop wearing your bullet proof jammies…AIPAC isn't hiding under your bed. haha

@ Citizen
Corrie, and the USS Liberty "case", weren't buried. They were looked into, in the case of the USS Liberty, several times. Every time the investigators came to the same conclusion. Israelis sometimes make mistakes. I realize you favor the "evil-superbeing" theory of Jews which says that every time they do something they intend exactly the results that happen, but sorry. We're human, when the U.S. tells Israel that there are no U.S. ships in a war zone, a Jew might mistake a U.S. ship in the war zone for a non-U.S. ship, just like a non-Jew might under similar circumstances. Funny thing, I have never heard any of the USS Liberty conspiracy nuts claiming that the Canadian troops bombed by the U.S. in Afghanistan were deliberately targeted.
As for Rechel "Darwin Award Winner" Corrie, when someone stands in front of a bulldozer with poor visibility, damned if the Jewish x-ray vision doesn't let us down.
BTW, the reason that the bulldozer had poor visibility is that it was bulletproofed to keep the Palestinian terrorists that Rachel Corrie was there to support from shooting the driver. Ironic that she got killed due to precautions that were only needed because of the terrorists she was supporting.
On, I don't know about Chris, but though I wasn't there, I have seen the actual footage of her getting run over, and seen footage from the inside of the cab of the bulldozer (it is available on the Internet). It doesn't look like the driver could have seen her given her position and the limited visibility of the bulldozer. This was an accident that was the result of her stupidity and the shooting at drivers of the Palestinians.
Thomas Moorer, a chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a number of other high-level current and former American military personnel, all concluded in 2003 that Israel deliberately shot at the Liberty and that a new investigation should be conducted. Their efforts have been stifled by the usual gang of useful idiots who sit in even higher echelons of power than these men, and who are willingly subservient to Israel and its advocates.
Findings of the Independent Commission of Inquiry into the Israeli Attack on the USS Liberty, the Recall of Military Rescue Support Aircraft while the Ship was Under Attack, and the Subsequent Cover-up by the United States Government
CAPITOL HILL, WASHINGTON, D.C.

Chairman, Liberty Alliance
GENERAL RAYMOND G. DAVIS, UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS, (RET.)*
Former Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps

REAR ADMIRAL MERLIN STARING, UNITED STATES NAVY, (RET.)
Former Judge Advocate General of the Navy

AMBASSADOR JAMES AKINS, (RET.)
Former United States Ambassador to Saudi Arabia
Director, Liberty Alliance
We, the undersigned, having undertaken an independent investigation of Israel’s attack on the USS Liberty, including eyewitness testimony from surviving crewmembers, a review of naval and other official records, an examination of official statements by the Israeli and American governments, a study of the conclusions of all previous official inquiries, and a consideration of important new evidence and recent statements from individuals having direct knowledge of the attack or the cover up, hereby find the following: **
1.
That on June 8, 1967, after eight hours of aerial surveillance, Israel launched a two-hour air and naval attack against the USS Liberty, the world’s most sophisticated intelligence ship, inflicting 34 dead and 172 wounded American servicemen (a casualty rate of seventy percent, in a crew of 294);
2.
That the Israeli air attack lasted approximately 25 minutes, during which time unmarked Israeli aircraft dropped napalm canisters on the Liberty’s bridge, and fired 30mm cannons and rockets into our ship, causing 821 holes, more than 100 of which were rocket-size; survivors estimate 30 or more sorties were flown over the ship by a minimum of 12 attacking Israeli planes which were jamming all five American emergency radio channels;
3.
That the torpedo boat attack involved not only the firing of torpedoes, but the machine-gunning of the Liberty’s firefighters and stretcher-bearers as they struggled to save their ship and crew; the Israeli torpedo boats later returned to machine-gun at close range three of the Liberty’s life rafts that had been lowered into the water by survivors to rescue the most seriously wounded;
4.
That there is compelling evidence that Israel’s attack was a deliberate attempt to destroy an American ship and kill her entire crew; evidence of such intent is supported by statements from Secretary of State Dean Rusk, Undersecretary of State George Ball, former CIA director Richard Helms, former NSA directors Lieutenant General William Odom, USA (Ret.), Admiral Bobby Ray Inman, USN (Ret.), and Marshal Carter; former NSA deputy directors Oliver Kirby and Major General John Morrison, USAF (Ret.); and former Ambassador Dwight Porter, U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon in 1967;
5.
That in attacking the USS Liberty, Israel committed acts of murder against American servicemen and an act of war against the United States;
6.
That fearing conflict with Israel, the White House deliberately prevented the U.S. Navy from coming to the defense of the Liberty by recalling Sixth Fleet military rescue support while the ship was under attack; evidence of the recall of rescue aircraft is supported by statements of Captain Joe Tully, Commanding Officer of the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, and Rear Admiral Lawrence Geis, the Sixth Fleet carrier division commander, at the time of the attack; never before in American naval history has a rescue mission been cancelled when an American ship was under attack;
7.
That although the Liberty was saved from almost certain destruction through the heroic efforts of the ship’s Captain, William L. McGonagle (MOH), and his brave crew, surviving crewmembers were later threatened with “court-martial, imprisonment or worse” if they exposed the truth; and were abandoned by their own government;
8.
That due to the influence of Israel’s powerful supporters in the United States, the White House deliberately covered up the facts of this attack from the American people;
9.
That due to continuing pressure by the pro-Israel lobby in the United States, this attack remains the only serious naval incident that has never been thoroughly investigated by Congress; to this day, no surviving crewmember has been permitted to officially and publicly testify about the attack;
10.
That there has been an official cover-up without precedent in American naval history; the existence of such a cover-up is now supported by statements of Rear Admiral Merlin Staring, USN (Ret.), former Judge Advocate General of the Navy; and Captain Ward Boston, USN, (Ret.), the chief counsel to the Navy’s 1967 Court of Inquiry of the Liberty attack;
11.
That the truth about Israel’s attack and subsequent White House cover-up continues to be officially concealed from the American people to the present day and is a national disgrace;
12.
That a danger to our national security exists whenever our elected officials are willing to subordinate American interests to those of any foreign nation, and specifically are unwilling to challenge Israel’s interests when they conflict with American interests; this policy, evidenced by the failure to defend the USS Liberty and the subsequent official cover-up of the Israeli attack, endangers the safety of Americans and the security of the United States.
WHEREUPON, we, the undersigned, in order to fulfill our duty to the brave crew of the USS Liberty and to all Americans who are asked to serve in our Armed Forces, hereby call upon the Department of the Navy, the Congress of the United States and the American people to immediately take the following actions:
FIRST: That a new Court of Inquiry be convened by the Department of the Navy, operating with Congressional oversight, to take public testimony from surviving crewmembers; and to thoroughly investigate the circumstances of the attack on the USS Liberty, with full cooperation from the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency and the military intelligence services, and to determine Israel’s possible motive in launching said attack on a U.S. naval vessel;
SECOND: That every appropriate committee of the Congress of the United States investigate the actions of the White House and Defense Department that prevented the rescue of the USS Liberty, thereafter threatened her surviving officers and men if they exposed the truth, and covered up the true circumstances of the attack from the American people; and
THIRD: That the eighth day of June of every year be proclaimed to be hereafter known as
USS LIBERTY REMEMBRANCE DAY, in order to commemorate the Liberty’s heroic crew; and to educate the American people of the danger to our national security inherent in any passionate attachment of our elected officials for any foreign nation.
We, the undersigned, hereby affix our hands and seals, this 22nd day of October, 2003.

** [1] Captain Ward Boston, USN, JAGC, Ret, the chief Navy attorney for the 1967 U.S. Navy Court of Inquiry into the Israeli attack, has recently come forward to repudiate the Court’s conclusion that the attack was “a case of mistaken identity”. Captain Boston has revealed that all available evidence, in fact, pointed in exactly the opposite direction — that it was a deliberate attack on a clearly identified American ship. In his affidavit dated October 9, 2003, Captain Boston states, “Admiral Kidd and I believed with certainty that this attack, which killed 34 American sailors and injured 172 others, was a deliberate effort to sink an American ship and murder its entire crew. I am certain that the Israeli pilots that undertook the attack, as well as their superiors who had ordered the attack, were aware that the ship was American.” [See Exhibit attached]. Captain Boston stated that he has personal knowledge that Admiral Kidd found the attack to be “a case of mistaken identity” in 1967 only because he was under direct orders to do so by Defense Secretary McNamara and President Johnson.
[2] Lieutenant Commander David E. Lewis, the Liberty’s chief intelligence officer (who was severely wounded in the attack) has reported a conversation with Admiral Lawrence R. Geis, the Sixth Fleet carrier division commander, who visited Lewis after he had been medically evacuated by helicopter to the aircraft carrier USS America. According to Lewis, “He (Admiral Geis) said that he wanted somebody to know that we weren’t forgotten…attempts HAD been made to come to our assistance. He said that he had launched a flight of aircraft to come to our assistance, and he had then called Washington. Secretary McNamara came on the line and ordered the recall of the aircraft, which he did. Concurrently he said that since he suspected that they were afraid that there might have been nuclear weapons on board, he reconfigured another flight of aircraft – strictly conventional weaponry – and re-launched it. After the second launch, he again called Washington to let them know what was going on. Again, Secretary McNamara ordered the aircraft recalled. Not understanding why, he requested confirmation of the order; and the next higher in command came on to confirm that…President Johnson…with the instructions that the aircraft were to be returned, that he would not have his allies embarrassed, he didn’t care who was killed or what was done to the ship…words to that effect. With that, Admiral Geis swore me to secrecy for his lifetime. I had been silent up until I found out from Admiral Moorer that Admiral Geis had passed away” [transcript from NBC’s Liberty Story, aired on national television 1/27/92]. This statement by Commander Lewis has recently been corroborated by Tony Hart, a Navy communications technician stationed at the U.S. Navy Base in Morocco in June, 1967. Mr. Hart connected the telephone conversation between Secretary McNamara and Admiral Geis and stayed on the line to keep them connected. Hart has been recorded as saying that he overheard Admiral Geis refusing McNamara’s order to recall the Sixth Fleet rescue aircraft while the ship was under attack. Mr.Hart reported that McNamara responded,“we are not going to war over a bunch of dead sailors.”
[3] New evidence of intercepted radio communications between attacking Israeli pilots and the Israeli War Room, recorded by a U.S. Navy EC-121 spy plane, in which the Israeli pilots report seeing the Liberty’s American flag flying, has been collected by investigative author James Bamford – for 9 years the Washington Investigative Producer for ABC’s World News Tonight with Peter Jennings (and author of Body of Secrets, which includes a chapter entitled Blood about the attack on the Liberty). A similar radio message was intercepted by the EC-121 from the Israeli motor torpedo boats. This corroborates statements by surviving crewmembers, by Ambassador Dwight Porter, and by senior National Security Agency officials concerning NSA intercepts of Israeli pilot communications identifying the ship as American.

Recent poll reveals steep rise in racist views against Arabs in Israel
Marriage to an Arab is national treason
The survey, which was conducted for the Center Against Racism, also found that over 75 percent of participants did not approve of apartment buildings being shared between Arabs and Jews. Sixty percent of participants said they would not allow an Arab to visit their home.
According to the survey, racism against Arabs in Israel has seen a sharp rise since a similar survey was conducted two years ago.
In 2006, 247 racist acts against Arabs were reported, as opposed to 225 one year prior.
About 40 percent of participants agreed that “Arabs should have their right to vote for Knesset revoked”. The number was 55 percent lower in the previous survey. Also, over half of the participants agreed that Israel should encourage its Arab citizens to immigrate from the country.
Over half of the participants said they would not want to work under the direct management of an Arab, and 55 percent said “Arabs and Jews should be separated at entertainment sites”.
‘Arab culture inferior’
When asked what they thought of Arab culture, over 37 percent replied, “The Arab culture is inferior.”

Thanks Dan and Citizen. Thom just took the usual hasbara-usa goverment lackey hasbara line. The original investigation was cut way short from even a standard USS Navy time mandate. Johnson aided the quick cover up, as did McCain's daddy, congress, and the MSM. IT is the only time in USA naval history that any nation has got away with this travesty of justice. Congressional rep flunkies still trot out the joint
hasbara–USA flunky line, even after the Chicago Tribune's article, which was the last one in the MSM and
clearly indicated there was, is, a giant cover-up.
Of course the Caterpillar will work. If all the College Professors and Web Journalists of the world stop buying agriculture and heavy construction equipment, the will go out of business overnight.
