Hampshire College divested from South Africa in 1977. Apartheid began to crumble politically 13 years later. But is this a good analogy?
Yes. In
the end several hundred schools divested, but they did so within a few
months of each other in 1987 and 1988, ten years later. I believe they'll fall
like dominoes eventually, but not yet. It would be great if a few other
schools fell, but it will have to be schools like Hampshire. Small,
private and liberal. It will be much more difficult for a large state school. It's not impossible but it's too political for
a state institution right now. But there has to be a first, and this is it.
Oh, and this time it won't take 13 years. History doesn't like sitting through the same movie twice.
