‘Spengler’ unwittingly outs himself as David P. Goldman

A few months back, my friend Mark and I exposed the pseudonymous conservative columnist Spengler as the nom-de-plume of a LaRouchie-cum-neocon musician/trader named David P. Goldman. We decided to unmask him because author investigations are fun, and also because Spengler was saying things like More Arabs have to die, more Arabs need to be put behind barbed-wire; and I like people to know who's pushing such repulsive ideas.
Smoking gun time.
Yesterday Goldman self-identified as Spengler. Mark sent me the following link to a smart article by Goldman (he's smart about economics). First click on the main link, "First Things..." The byline is David Goldman. And then click on the "Cached" button. When you click on "Cached," the byline is Spengler.

Thanks. A couple years ago I sent Spengler a horribly nasty email, through Asia Times On Line, after his call for the US to start a war with Iran. I rather liked his humor and knowledge, but can no longer suffer reading his column. His conclusions make me ill.

  2. Ari says:

It's beyond pathetic that a war-mongering hack journalist like Goldman (who abandoned The West, the very same West which gave him his education and freedom to pursue it) tries to portray himself as a thinker and writer in the same league as Oswald Spengler.

  3. Given that your buddy Marx X says quite explicitlyu — twice — that he is an ex- 'Larouchie', I think it is downright dishonest of you to refer to him as a ;Karouchie' without qualification. Also the term itself is abusive. I am not going to pose as a defender of L Larouche, but I am not going to let you use him as a cheap straw man target either.

  4. sorry about the two misprints. I usually check first.

  5. - three misprints. It's only 3 a.m., or already 3 a.m., here. I need more coffee.

  6. Rowan says:

Better. Now, here again we have this dismissive word 'cult'. What do people mean when they refer to the Larouche organisation as a 'cult'? Kindly be specific.

  7. Witty's anonymous critic says:

If you're interested in the LaRouchies, Rowan, you could probably google something about them. My impression (firsthand experience in an airport) is that they are cultlike–intelligent, but slightly demented. And I started looking at the google entries–sure look like a bunch of nuts to me.

  8. Rowan says:

That is a silly reply, Richard. I have probably read more internet material both about and by them than anyone else here, since this is exactly the sort of thing I find intriguing. And you have certainly offered no explanation at all of what you yourself mean by the word 'cult'.

  9. Eva Smagacz says:

    Rowan,

Definitely one more cup of coffee ;-). Who are you conversing with?

  10. yes, Eva, you are right. not richard witty but witty's anonymous critic. wouldn't it be nice if people had the guts simply to sign their names to their comments, as you and I do, and as I have always done (I mean, I have never used a pseudonym, whether witty or otherwise).

I think Diane Feinstein is doing a pretty good job, too, of leaning forward on these issues. Perhaps Mondoweiss should ask the good Senator for an interview. I'd love to hear her answers to the questions: where do you stand on Zionism? the Settlements? the Two-State solution? AIPAC vs J Street. Perhaps it should also interview Ellison, Edwards & Baird. Interview some of these politicians and ask them the straight questions, and publish their responses. Enough of this hiding the ball, pretending that it is impolite to ask about the most important issue facing/corrupting our Congress. It's like living at Jefferson's Monticello, and never mentioning nor acknowledging that half the house slaves are children of the masters.

  12. TGGP says:

I called out Spengler here for his brazen deception.

I have seen no evidence that he is smart on economics.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Asia Times Online is my first read every morning. I think it is one of the best publications on political economy I’ve ever read; on or off line. Accordingly, I could not help but wonder who this idiot was who had the pretension to call himself Spengler and why such an excellent publication would feature him.

What is most interesting about your ‘outing’ is that recently there has appeared a new daily column by, you guessed it, David P. Goldman. Ironically, it’s not a half bad economics column. It is well written, empirical, and concise to the point.

Now I’m really confused. How could the same person write both extremely different columns? As they say” “Go figure?”

    Tom

Haha, busted!!! Thank you for exposing this loon.

Oh what a finest of games, the hunting of a man!

Sick him! Sick him! Get the Jew!

was by an impostor antisemite. The Jewish people of Israel has left "the goyim" alone long ago, and even bofore that there was no sucking-off going on except in the perverted minds of the scapegoaters.

FYI Philip the Mondoweishkis here self-identifies as a "Jew" (whatever he means by that).

Were he a non-Jew, I wouldn't accuse him of being a traitor to his gradparents' people that he is.

This, today, 3/30, was my first encounter with Mr. Goldman, a weak specious, tendentious piece, on a site not known for speciousness,

  20. Tertium Quid says:

Spengler is always interesting, even when he is wrong. I can't say that about many other writers.
