Media math: 1 Israeli colonist’s life=0 American freedom rider’s

Susie Kneedler writes:

NPR has never mentioned Tristan Anderson that I know of. A search of its website yields nothing, but today on "Morning Edition" has already announced the "axe-wielding" militant's killing of the Israeli settler in the West Bank.

Is Tel Aviv a colony? Are the Jews living there colonists? Can you name me a Palestinian who does NOT think so?

  2. Technically, I think the Israelis need to actually kill Mr. Anderson before NPR 'officially' ignores the story. As it stands now, it's just your run-of-the-mill omission.

It makes me think of the Al Franken bit on "the Al Franken Decade" whereby every question had to be posed as such, "How does this affect me…Al Franken."

NPR seems to have an unwritten (or written…who the hell knows?) policy of , "How does this affect me…the state of Israel" and if even the mere mention of a particular uncomfortable fact might make Zionists cry, it in essence, does not exist.

    Bar Kochba

Say, Barry, weren't you banned for general insanity at TPM?
But you are crazy, you know. "Can you name me a Palestinian…"
Who the hell are you talking to? You're nuts, baby, plum loco.

It's that fascinating assumption of authourity which keeps me coming back for the Ziotrolls. What was it yesterday? Oh yeah, that's right: "Phil, you worship the Palestinians"
What can give a person that kind of vicarious omnipotence? Ziocaine, that's what.

  4. otto says:

Yes, Tel Aviv is a colony. Israel is a colony, like French Algeria.

  5. Doppler says:

I complained last year to my local newspaper, concerning its coverage of Phil's issue, calling the editor's attention to something highly newsworthy Avraham Burg had said that was quoted on this cite, and I pointed out that the paper reports with frequency on the Holocaust, yet had never even mentioned the Naqba according to searches of its site. Well, that word has now appeared twice since March 29, in different stories from the Middle East! So, Phil, send your post to the editorial board of NPR. It will start a conversation. It will start a thought. The spirit of Tristan Anderson will dwell in the thoughts and minds of those editors. Eventually, they will change course.

I noticed the NYT put this horrible incident on the front page of its web edition. An attack on Israeli setters in Palestinian territory is front page news, but there is hardly any mention of the illegality of these settlements.

  7. Rowan says:

It isn't even controversial to say that they are "colonists'. The alternative would be to say that they were "natives'. It's a non-discussion, pure semantic triviality.

  8. Harry Fenton says:

I don't think that NPR did a report on Tristan Anderson's 21 months of trespassing and tree-sitting at UC Berkeley. They don't do a report every time a person in the US is tased by a police officer, rightly or wrongly. And they don't do a report every time a protester is hit by a tear gas canister that bounces off of the ground into his head. Why should they? There are much more important issues facing the United States and NPR's listening audience than the injuries of a 38 year old crackpot who can think of nothing better to do than support Hamas and harass Israeli troops.

And no – they don't refer to Israeli's as "colonists" for the same reason they don't refer to Palestinians occupying the West Bank and Gaza as "colonists". It's a silly argument both ways.

  9. tommy says:

During the recent Gaza civilian massacre CBS Evening News did a long feature about an Israeli soldier's funeral. He was killed by friendly fire. An Israeli soldier killed by friendly fire was given more national media attention in the US than all of the Palestinian children murdered by his peers. CBS will probably run today's story near the top of the show. Acts of violence against illegal Israeli settlers have been selected for news saturation just in case any Americans should have any feelings for the suffering of Palestinians.

  10. Harry Fenton says:

Of course, now I get it! An axe-murderer who intentionally kills a 13-year-old boy and seriously wounds and maims a 7-year-old girl is exactly on par with the unintentional head injury to a 38-year-old protester who illegally entered Israel on false pretenses and who was harassing Israeli soldiers in a restricted area with a group of anarchists and who happened to be injured by a tear gas canister that bounced off the ground and into his head.

If you think for a moment that these two incidents are on the same moral level, you simply have no clue and are horrifically oblivious to what most sane people view as normative behavior.

  11. Citizen says:

    @ Fenton

"And no – they don't refer to Israeli's as "colonists" for the same reason they don't refer to Palestinians occupying the West Bank and Gaza as "colonists". It's a silly argument both ways."

How so? Are you claiming Palestinians have not, do not resist dispossession and occupation
because they are colonists? How can one colonize his own land? Your argument is silly one way.
    Are you a moron?

  12. Chris Berel says:

No citizen, but he has certainly identified you as an idiot.

  13. Rowan says:

oh, Berel, his comments are always so mechanical and moronic, he's really an argument for the necessity of ruthless eugenic pruning, himself, as he claims Rachel Corrie was.

  14. Rowan says:

sorry, I phrased that confusingly, i was talking of Berel, not of 'Citizen.' It is Berel who claims that the death of Rachel Corrie was a eugenically desirable event.
