One of my new themes on this site is that the Israel lobby as we know it is over. Gaza and Netanyahu shattered it. Obama gave his speech in Cairo because he knew he would have political cover from American Jews to reach out to the Muslim world. Marty Peretz and Charles Krauthammer didn't like the speech, but Jeffrey Goldberg and Roger Cohen (and Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod) did. That's the ballgame.
This morning Ori Nir of Peace Now provides powerful evidence for my theory from a still-secret poll that says that women and Democrats are defecting:
"Israel Radio ran a scoop this morning: poll data showing a sharp drop in Americans’ perception that Israel’s government seeks peace. The poll was conducted by a U.S. organization that strives to improve Israel’s image here."
You see: When Obama distances himself from Israel, the American people are listening. And the poll was conducted by The Israel Project, a lobby organization that I gather had a couple of people on hand in Cairo to interpret Obama's speech to reporters. (I missed them.) Nir continues:
The state-run radio station’s Washington correspondent, Nathan Guttman, obtained data from a recent unpublished poll, conducted by the Israel Project, an organization that works to improve Israel’s image in the United States.
The Israel Project has been conducting a periodic running poll, asking American registered voters questions about Israel. Consistently, the polls’ results – those that were published – have so far shown a steady, sturdy level of support for Israel as a peace seeking country.
That has changed, quite dramatically, now that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is refusing to get on board President Obama’s two-state peace push. And that change is probably why the Israel Project has not (yet?) published its poll.
According to the poll, conducted among a rather large sample (800 registered voters) between June 9 and June 11, there has been a 20% drop (!) in the perception of Israel’s government as peace seeking. Here are the data. The question asked was: “And, how committed do you think the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is to reaching a peace agreement with the Palestinians?” A similar question (“How committed do you think the Israeli government is to reaching a peace agreement with the Palestinians?”) was asked in December 2008 and in March 2009. In December and March, the results were almost identical: 66% said it was committed and 29% (in December) and 30% (in March) said it was not. This month, however, in the light of the open conflict on Israeli-Palestinian peace between Bibi and Obama, only 46% say Israel is committed and 39% say it is not.
Furthermore, there is a steep decline in the percentage of Americans who say that the U.S. should support Israel. That has dropped from 71% in March 2008 (at the time of the Annapolis process) to only 44% now.
Israel Radio reported that the Israel Project confirmed the validity of the poll and the data, but said they were “not final.”
APN has leaned that the poll findings were sent confidentially to a small number of people in the U.S. and in Israel.

Is it surprising? An increasing number of Americans may not know their names, but they realize that Zionist subversives like Marty Feldstein (crimes related to AIG) or Stuart Levey (seditious conspiracy, obstruction of justice) belong in jail and not in government.

That & hearing over & over that our support for Israel is a major cause of US-directed terrorism while witnessing the inhumane treatment of the Palestinians, add together billions in yearly military aid plus a recession, and you've got something of a perfect storm.

Our student group is sponsoring a girl to go to Gaza with the Vivia Palestina. In addition to other stuff, we are throwing a party and all proceeds will go to sponsoring her and the supplies she will buy with the Viva Palestina group, once she's in Egypt. The response from students is amazing. People are really pissed at Israel.
When I found out Israel was using telecommunication companies to spy on Americans and its officials that was the last straw. We give them so much support, financially and militaristically. I've never believed that the percentage of Americans who would voluntarily give money to Israel, or volunteer to fight in wars that are explicitly for Israel, is high. My guess is that the number of non-Jewish Americans (even Christian Zionists) who would give directly to Israel, or try to join the IDF is very small. I also don't believe that only a small percentage of the Jewish community in America supports the special status of Israel and Jews in the United States. Much of the dismay expressed by American Jews about Gaza/Israel lately is just is just an attempt to draw attention away from the support the Jewish community has given fro Israel's crimes over the last 60+ years. In the end, I seriously doubt that very many of the courageous Jewish voices we hear at the moment would support a peace in Palestine that wouldn't work in the favor Israel. I've never taken part in a poll that I believe could accurately reflect my opinion, so I doubt that the polls cited were constructed to do much more than elicit more than one or two responses for the purpose of spin. I also seriously doubt that even many Christian Zionists would volunteer to fight in Israel for Israel's interests, or to give of their own money to the point that it hurts. Most Americans have far bigger worries than what happens to a bunch of Jews in Israel. The poll on his post seems suspect. #1) If there were ever a time for people to turn against Israel, it would have been in the aftermath of the Gaza conflict, which the Gallup poll covered–but found no measurable difference in opinion. #2) He overhypes the disagreement between Bibi and Obama–and even this rift wouldn't be likely to sway so large a number against Israel.

Well said man. You forgot to mention, what did USA got in return? The war in Iraq is clearly for Israel's benefit but I didn't notice any Israeli troops in that 30 nation coalition! Yet we sacrificed thousands of young boy's lives and trillion of dollars, for what?
I will not support Israel for as long as it lies about their attack on the U.S.S. Liberty in 1967. Anybody knowledgeable about the incident knows that it was not an accident. Until Israel admits that, and explains their motivation, why would any American want to support them? It is also a country that spies on us more than any other, with the possible exception of China. But we don't hand out aid to China. Finally I find it odd that here in the United States, where Jews are a small minority, the majority of them are adamant that we have continued mass immigration and amnesty for illegal immigrants, all to make white gentiles a minority as quickly as possible (all of our Jewish senators voted for illegal alien amnesty the last time it came up). Yet they support a Jewish ethnostate that only lets Jews immigrate. Imagine the uproar if the United States only let Christians immigrate! Now I'm going to be labeled a vicious Jew hater. But I'm not. I have Chinese friends. That does not mean I think my government should look the other way when China spies on us. That doesn't mean I think we should be handng out billions of dollars of aid to China. And it doesn't mean I have to favor the policies of the Chinese government. I have Jewish friends.
