Opponent says Jane Harman represents Israel, not California

mondo

I love this story. Democrat Marcy Winograd (left) is primarying Congresswoman Jane Harman in California. Winograd ran in 2006 and got 38 percent, she says. And Winograd, who is Jewish, is making the race all about the special relationship with Israel. Like, she’s having a reading of My Name Is Rachel Corrie in LA in August.

And she is accusing Harman of dual loyalty. Remember that when some opponent accused Rahm Emanuel of dual loyalty a few years back in Chicago, he got crushed, accused of anti-Semitism. A legitimate question, when Emanuel had run off to serve as a civilian at an Israeli base during the Gulf War. Winograd’s press release:

Since 1967, the Israelis have demolished 24,000 homes in violation of international law.

Says Winograd, a co-founder of LA Jews for Peace, “I am for universal human rights – and the right to keep your home is considered sacred in Jewish tradition.  The TALMUD a rabbinic collection of Jewish laws, recognizes that owning a home enhances dignity and self-worth.  If we are to promote peace in the Middle East, we must heed Rachel Corrie’s message of non-violent resistance to human rights violations.  I appreciate President Obama’s courageous call to action and support his efforts to begin a new peace initiative that holds both sides accountable to just principles.”

Winograd’s opponent in the 36th congressional district was previously investigated by the FBI for allegedly using her influence in Congress to get spying charges dropped against American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) analysts.  Harman voted for resolutions in support of the Israeli siege of Gaza and invasion of Lebanon and was a featured speaker at the recent AIPAC conference.

“I’m not clear who Jane Harman represents in Congress – the people of her district or a right-wing faction in a foreign government?” says Winograd.  “When elected to Congress, I will represent the people of this district and the interests of the United States.”

What a breath of fresh air she is!

  6. Richard Witty says:

She’ll have to have MUCH MORE content than that to win, or deserve to win.

Don’t go “one issue” on this. We’ve had enough abortion opponent representatives (a comment on the “one issue).

Harman is the chair of the house intelligence committee. That is a VERY powerful position, as an asset.

She’s also wrong about what Talmud is. Its a collection of discussion of law (the opinions), not a collection of laws. There are other books that summarized the discussions of Talmud into a description of the conclusions.

    • Citizen says:

Yes you’re right about the Talmud, and she’s misinformed about it. That the likes
of Harmon holds that VERY powerful key house intelligence position horrifies me. What ever happened to the investigation into her tapped phone conversation concerning the (now deep-sixed) AIPAC
      spy case?

If there ever was a case for “one issue” voting, Harmon is it.

      • Richard Witty says:

Its ALWAYS a mistake, pro or con.

      • Citizen says:

And please quit your weak habit of emphasis by using CAPS. It’s not the slightest
aid if you are attempting to convince anyone of your POV. It instead evokes your
paramount ideology, no matter if cloaked in abstract humanistic lingo.

    • contrarian says:

Harman is the chair of the house intelligence committee. That is a VERY powerful position, as an asset.

WRONG, Witty. Flat wrong. Which is par for the course for you. Apparently you missed it while you were busy making excuses for her when the whole AIPAC scandal broke earlier this year, but Harman was expelled as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee nearly three years ago, just after the 2006 elections. She’s not even on the Intelligence Committee anymore.

She now chairs the Intelligence Subcommittee of the Homeland Security Committee, but don’t be fooled: that subcommittee is nothing like the Intelligence Commttee she once chaired; its members do not have high-level security clearances and are not privy to White House briefings and classified documents.

So you’re going to have to find a new rationalization, Witty. Sorry.

    • tommy says:

How would being the chair of the house intelligence committee be an asset to the constituents of Harmon’s California congressional district?

Being the chair of the house intelligence committee is a great asset for foreign espionage controllers, not for the citizens of California, and that should be one of the arguments used against Harmon’s candidacy.

    • Colin Murray says:

Don’t go “one issue” on this.

Why not? This is by far and away the single most important security issue facing the United States.

    • Colin Murray says:

That is a VERY powerful position, as an asset.

      An asset to whom?

She’s also wrong about what Talmud is.

She is right about Jane Harman putting Israeli before America. Her understanding of Talmud is utterly irrelevant.

  7. Thank you, Philip, for coverage of my campaign — and thank you to all who have commented. To clarify, my campaign addresses many issues, most of all the need to realign our priorities so that the trillions we are wasting on war, occupation, and no-strings-attached bank bail-outs are invested, instead, in addressing human needs: health care for all, education that promotes critical thinking, and jobs in emerging green technologies. Please visit my web site: http://www.winograd4congress. com to learn more about my campaign for a new economy.

Please note that Jane Harman is not the chair of the Intelligence Committee. In fact, House Speaker Pelosi passed over Harman, refusing to give her the chair when Congress changed hands. Previously, Harman was the ranking minority member of the House Intell Committee during the Bush administration. It was Harman’s relentless defense of the Bush wiretaps and her pressuring the NY Times not to publish the Bush law-breaking that, undoubtedly, upset Pelosi. Though Harman lobbied for a job in the Obama administration, President Obama passed over Harman, as well. Bottom line — She is not so powerful.

When I go to Congress, I expect to lead the Progressive Caucus and advocate for a stronger America, one that is rooted in a sustainable economy and a commitment to the rule of law.

    • Richard Witty says:

I’m glad that you are stepping up to express your views.

But, with all of your stated agenda already in process under the Obama administration, what exactly are you running for?

And, how do your views on the majority of issues that affect your constituents, differ from Harman’s?

Obama is proceeding very well relative to Israel to my understanding. How would your presence in Congress, enhance good?

      • Richard Witty says:

I get that your impression on Israeli abuses describe a contrasting perspective from Harman’s.

There is a balanced position. I appreciate in your description of the issue that you regarded Hamas shelling and prior gruesome civilian terror as reprehensible and inneffective (my words, not yours).

There are ways to express truth on the issue that don’t unnecessarily alienate your potential constituents. I see that as important for both the purpose of getting elected, AND for the purpose of accomplishing good when elected.

Invoking cause-celebres will motivate your base (much as anti-abortion diatribes motivate the republican conservative base). But, it might also motivate your opposition and in a partisan manner. Your assessment of the issue will be described as simplistic. Hopefully that will be a false attribution, and you can explain in more complexity how you approach the multitude of issues.

If it is important to speak about, it is also important to be very skillful in addressing.

I personally regard the important goal to be a viable and consented peace. I very much like Obama’s approach so far to accomplish that.

I understand that as comprised mostly of skillfully eliminating obstacles to peace, layer by layer by layer by layer. He does NOT evoke cause celebre’s, as that deters the process of developing a consent (even with his assertive mediation).

And, at the same time, he does apply backbone to critical tipping issues (like the settlements) which indicate Israel’s long-term intent.

You need more than just your base to win your district. Maybe I’m wrong, and Susan Sarandon’s support will get you elected. (You should note that Phil savaged her here for willingly buying jewelry from a large jewelry shop owned by a supporter of settlers).

  8. Citizen says:

Not so. In the primary I switched to Republican just to vote for Ron Paul. Then, when our ill-conceived de facto two party system left me with a choice between Obama or McCain, I voted for Obama–on a single issue–more balance in our Middle East foreign policy. Otherwise, the pros and cons of the two balanced each other out. Obviously
    we differ on priorities.

  9. Citizen says:

Further, I don’t think you are sincere when you say “Its ALWAYS a mistake, pro or con.”
My reading of the aggregate of all your comments to date on this blog is that you are a
PEP to the core. Personally, I think human life is more complex. For example, I have a very nuanced view of the Pro Life vs. Pro Choice debate. Do you? Or do you think one size fits all?

    • Richard Witty says:

Of course you would use a single-issue dismissal, Citizen.

You entirely misrepresent my views. Again, it would be worth your integrity TO make the effort the represent them, even in the process of criticism of them.

      • history buff says:

No more important issue than our one-sided support of Israel. I agree with AIPAC types like you on that. I just put the USA first, while you and AIPAC types put Israel First. Everybody here knows it. You have no integrity.

      • Saleema says:

        Richard talks about integrity. lol

  10. Paul de Rooij says:

When it comes to Harman/Emanuel even the term “dual loyalty” is not appropriate. The Fifth columnists only have one loyalty…

  11. Ed says:

Single-issue voting is OBLIGATORY when confronting the issue of Jewish nationalism co-opting the resources and moral authority of the world’s only super-power to pursue it’s own ascension, enrichment and political agenda, which includes World War III.

    • Citizen says:

Witty thinks it’s of low priority. He claims never to be a “one issue” man. LOL
He leaves his obsession issue trail here everyday, and has the gall (“chutzpah”)
      to state otherwise.

      • Ed says:

To me, Witty demonstrates the intractable nature of Jewish nationalism, even among its most “liberal” adherents. He’s been hashing it out here with Zionist critics for literally years, Jew and gentile, and he’s barely budged an inch — despite Lebanon, despite Gaza, despite the counter points and counter arguments rebutting and discrediting hasbara spin, all painstakingly documented here day after day.

If liberal Jewish nationalists like Witty refuse to see the light, or even consider the Palestinian perspective after undergoing barrages of everything from patient rationalism to reason to thoroughly nasty insult, I really don’t believe there is much hope of ever expecting anything but treason, treachery and subversion from average diaspora Jews under Jewish nationalism’s grip.

And the Shoah isn’t an excuse, because the Jewish problem was incredibly bad before there even was a Shoah. Now it’s even worse. Even America can’t tame it. This is an unpleasant reality that must sooner or later be faced.

  12. Saxon says:

It appears Winograd lied about the Talmud and the essence of the Corrie suicide. It has been proven that Corrie was a violent ideologue. She was an active advocate of suicide bombing.

    • Oscar says:

Saxon, man, your hasbara is venal. You seem to suggest she — what — “violently” attacked the IDF-modified Caterpillar bulldozer by throwing her body under the treads? Corrie committed “suicide?” Winograd is gonna mop up the floor with Harman. By the way, this conversation never happened.

      • Citizen says:

        LOL
        “this conversation never happened.”
Exactly what she told the Zionist on the other end of the phone.
Turned out they didn’t need her. Just another version of the USS Liberty incident.
Franklin’s out and mowing his lawn, the little Eichmann prick.

      • Saxon says:

Winograd will be defending the first part of her last name as her opponents will show that that is the reason for her ignorant remarks.

If Corrie had not intended suicide, she could have easily escaped the clutches of the mad bulldozer bearing down on her at the unreasonable speed of 6 miles per hour.

    • Citizen says:

The Talmud is just arguments back and forth dealing with the nuance of living by
the fine points of Jewish law as between fellow Jews; otherwise, it contains arguments
dealing with the nuance of treating Jews differently than Gentiles; that they should be treated differently is never questioned at all except when it’s necessary to treat
Gentiles the same for PR purposes. There’s 613 ways to skin a cat, but each one is
itself open to interpretation by the Talmudic Jew.

Yeah, I saw that M-16 and rocket launcher Rachel was aiming at the IDF Peoria bulldozer when it
      cracked her back.

      • Saxon says:

I recall seeing the lasar-guided bulldozer with a picture of Corrie burning an American flag while blood dripped from her fangs.

      • Oscar says:

        link to motherjones.com

Looking toward the bulletproof windows, [Rachel Corrie] could probably see the silhouettes of two Israeli operators. The steel blade began pushing a huge pile of debris and sandy soil toward her, so close that the scent of the moist earth permeated her nostrils.

The ground began to shift beneath her feet. Tom Dale was standing a few yards from Corrie as the bulldozer got close. “The bulldozer built up earth in front of it. Its blade was slightly dug into the earth,” he told me. “She began to stand up. The earth was pushed over her feet. She tried to climb on top of the earth, to avoid being overwhelmed. She climbed to the point where her shoulders were above the top lip of the blade. She was standing on this pile of earth. As the bulldozer continued, she lost her footing, and she turned and fell down this pile of earth. Then it seemed like she got her foot caught under the blade. She was helpless, pushed prostrate, and looked absolutely panicked, with her arms out, and the earth was piling itself over her. The bulldozer continued so that the place where she fell down was directly beneath the cockpit. I think she would have been between the treads. The whole [incident] took place in about six or seven seconds.”

Dale looked on, stunned, as the D9 slowly reversed and dragged its blade along the ground — back over Corrie’s body. Then he and the six other activists rushed to her aid. A photograph an activist took of the moment captures the tragedy with painful clarity: Corrie sprawls on the ground, face contorted in pain, her legs twisted pitifully, her lip split open, blood trickling down her cheek. In the background the bulldozer’s blade looms over her crumpled body like a wall of steel. A British activist named Alice cradled her head and assured her an ambulance was on its way. “My back is broken,” Corrie gasped. Then she lapsed into unconsciousness.

Let’s hear it for the most moral army in the world.

Oh shit, there it is, right out in the open, being used as a talking point in a campaign.
This, I think I might categorically say, is bad for the Jews.

    • Saxon says:

Actually, it is bad for Wino-grad. It will open up an investigation as to why she is advocating siding with Islamic Fascism

      • history buff says:

And everyone will see she is an American and humanist first, and Harmon can go
ascend to Israeli heaven, good riddance.

  14. Mooser says:

Oh Lord, Corrie again. What is it with Zionists and poor murdered Corrie? But you got to ask yourself (while shuddering and getting hot with shame) what the hell wires do they have crossed in their brain, that they think that posthmous abuse of Corrie is a convincing arguement to use with anti-Zionists? Think about that. Now that is a display of some really piss-poor character traits.

    • AnaSanchez says:

You’ve hit the nail on the head, Mooser. Now why is it that despite all those Nobel prizes and tests showing higher-than-average IQ scores that a significant number of your co-religionists are affected with “some really piss-poor character traits?”

Most Jews are imbeciles. The presence of a few off-the-charts geniuses like Einstein doesn’t alter that fact one iota.

Sandler. Madoff. Leiberman (either Joe or Avigdor). These are typical Jews. Spinoza, Einstein, Mandelstam, Paul Celan, Walter Benjamin are the exception to the fairy reliable rule.

    • Citizen says:

Well, if you mean moral and mental integrity, I agree. On the foot, if your highest value is Jewish “continuity,” that is, immortality via reproduction forever on earth,
no matter what the cost, especially to non-Jews, it’s quite a display of logical consistency. If you read Rachael’s letters, she’s not exactly a Julius Streicher kind of girl; actually more like an Anne Frank who lived and chose Ghandi tactics. More like Winograd than Harmon, eh?

  15. v... says:

I say look carefully at where the money resides, it is in Jane Harmon’s pocket, in 2007 she declared between $222, 175, 722 million dollars and $596, 678, 022 dollars. Than look at where the money is –

    JANE HARMON BANK ROLL

We need to stop placing individuals in office who do not represent the people. We have this long trail of elites, who do not identify with any working class people – we have an entrenched class process going on in public office.

People who have no monetary cares make policies for individuals that count pennies, health policy is formulated by people who have never sat in a public clinic or have never had the problem of no money for health care – transportation policy is made by those who have never ridden a bus or looked for a parking space – our education policies are legislated by people who have never sent their kids to public school – daycare by those who have high payed nannies to care for their children.

These type of people (above) always say and believe that people of low income are doing just fine, the environment is just fine (they retire from work on their estates). If you put these elites in they will always equate the national interest with the people they rub elbows with, not with the likes of you and I.

They see the poor and working class as deserving little because we are regarded as contributing little. This is the same type of person who has brought you the WTO, that was made to fly above the will of the people and national sovereignty! Community interest is subordinated to the interest of finance capital and multi-national corporations. These people meet in secret and do not publicize their proceedings and are not subject to administrative appeal.

THE RICH ELITE TRAIN OF “REPRESENTATIVES” PURPOSEFULLY SET UP THIS WAY

So these individuals, including Jane Harmon, will vote and influence where their interests lie – and they are aligned with other than the people will. This is why she, as well as others are approachable not only toward Zionist goals, but where their money lies. You have an entire group in both houses that do not listen to the people, have their own interests, and make a joke out of representative government.

Nothing will ever merit comparison with the One True Tragedy, and the One True Tragedy will eternally limit ideological introspection to Zionist-approved conclusions.
