Debra DeLee of Peace Now has a great letter in today's Washington Post telling Obama to keep up the pressure on the settlements:
First, a settlement freeze is absolutely necessary, both to demonstrate
that Israel is approaching negotiations in good faith and to avoid
reaching a point of irreversibility beyond which the creation of a
Palestinian state would simply be impossible. Second, a freeze is
achievable, both politically and legally, and if any Israeli government
could enforce such a measure, it is a broad-based, right-wing coalition
such as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's government. Third, the
Palestinians have been taking steps to fulfill their commitments under
the "road map" for a peace agreement.
But the letter ends with this line:
The Obama administration is not "posturing" but rather — at long last
– doing the right thing for the future of Israel as a democratic
Jewish state and for Israel's future relations with its neighbors.
I wonder: is this how progressives want to imagine Israel's identity? Will young people sign on to this vision? If we said that the U.S. was a democratic Christian state, would some see those ideas as contradictory? (Myself I am not opposed to Israel being a Jewish state on the idea that many states discriminate on a religious/ethnic basis. But I don't think that's anything to write home about; and, not in my name.)

I went to a New-England-ish private school (03')/wealthy family (parents are doctors)/etc. etc. I actually consider myself to be somewhat spoiled. I didn't even know about this conflict until 2 years ago. I remember thinking Iraq was a good idea because 'Saddam was a bad guy'. Just typical jingoism that I took for granted. In HS, I didn't care about politics and as an undergraduate, I mainly just watched 'The Daily Show' and that was just for a laugh. It wasn't until recently that I got interested in this stuff. I've never been accused of racism or bigotry although I've definitely made comments that can be misconstrued that way. There is a difference between being an actual racist and then being called a racist for political reasons. The Jewish community is a minority, yet they have tons of money/power. That's not an antisemitic trope – it's a reality. And Jews have replaced WASP elite. None of this is false or controversial unless you're looking to play that name-game. I notice as people get older, especially my family (all doctors), understand this too because first off, they aren't from this culture. They do not have to deal with this hysteria on a daily basis. Actually maybe their culture was like that…but they were insulated having grown up in a small village. Once my family and my extended family got their degrees and such they were able to establish homes here and blah blah blah, they were American citizens. I grew up around philosemites, but I think they are mostly blind on the issue of Jewish influence. Anti-Semitism would be an irrational prejudice or dislike towards Jews. But having a beef with a community that is largely responsible for involving the rest of us with Israel isn't irrational. And it isn't just non-Jews, or Jews who are out-of-the-loop, who proclaim Jewish power, so it isn't wrong to notice the Jewish insularity and influence in areas such as finance, culture, MSM, entertainment, foreign policy, education and institutions of all sorts—most of which have taken on a heavily Jewish flavor, and are failing. Add to all of that, forced holocaust guilt, constant spin on Jewish issues, and a cynical group politics that is very hypocritical, and it's only natural that there is a problem.
We should avoid the hysterics of tribal Jews and refer to studies on attitudes towards minorities both here and in Europe. Overwhelmingly it's Arabs and Muslims who are the targets – not Jews. It's this constant need to feel victimized. I think tribal Jews could simply not know themselves without the concept of antisemitism (totally politicized).

I think that if you look at Judaism and Israel you will find that while the two are linked it is Judaism that has been twisted in order to serve the needs of Jewish nationalism. This is the normal coarse of things for state religions. I think that Einstein was more accurate when he said "Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind." Too many Americans do view Israel as a democratic, Jewish state. Quaintly, they think of the passive Jews from Michener's "The Source," who are benign care takers of the 'Holy Land.' Israelis might have been like that decades ago, if ever, but the world is beginning to learn differently as the massive aggression Israelis use becomes too heinous and institutional to be ignored.
