a third intifadah?

Access to the Temple Mount is being restricted following Palestinian violence in Jerusalem. The JPost:

Jerusalem Police chief Cmdr. Aharon Franco caused a brief stir when, referring to the ongoing violence, he called the capital’s Muslim residents "ungrateful."
"There’s a certain degree of ungratefulness from the city’s Muslim population," Franco said, "after the police worked hard to allow peaceful prayers on the Temple Mount over the month of Ramadan."
Franco’s statements provoked outrage from Arab lawmakers, including MK Ahmed Tibi (United Arab List-Ta’al), who suggested that the police chief "take a course in democracy and the values of equality. Not all Jews are smart," he said.

Shattered rising expectations (Obama-Mitchell peacemaking?) have often been the spark that ignites rebellion. In the face of mounting Palestinian violence in Jerusalem and the possibility of the outbreak of a third Intifada, the reaction of the Police Chief Franco is _________ . (fill in the blank)

1. Nuanced and reasonable.

2. A possible beginning for dialog between two embattled peoples.

3. A mindless expression of colonial mentality.

4. A celebration of an undivided Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty.

Native Palestinians should not be offended by Zionist remarks – as most of the Zionist leaders are known for making insulting remarks for the non-Zionist Jews. Furthermore, Franco’s remark show the acute frustration the Zionist regime after failing to control the Second Intifada (2000). The Zionist regime and its puppet in Washington and Europe have failed miserably to destroy democratically elected Hamas government and breath new life into the half-dead corrupt Fatah leadership,

    Can Hamas be beaten?

If you want real riots, try restricting Haredi access to the Kotel to males over 50.

    “But that’s different!”

According to Erekat, Israel is deliberately inciting a new intifada in Jerusalem, in order to justify a crackdown. link to haaretz.com

A senior Palestinian official on Tuesday accused Israel of deliberately creating “an extremely dangerous situation” in East Jerusalem, to trigger violence, justify a crackdown and tighten its grip on the disputed city.

“Israel is lighting matches in the hope of sparking a fire, deliberately escalating tensions in occupied East Jerusalem rather than taking steps to placate the situation,” chief peace negotiator Saeb Erekat said in a statement before meetings later this week with U.S. President Barack Obama’s envoy.

In other words, a repeat of Ariel Sharon’s accomplishment in 2000. This would certainly result in mass expulsions, which is exactly what Israel wants to render East Jerusalem arabenrein.

What a way to stir it up. Ariel Sharon must be proud

The Netanyahu govt has to be concerned about what is the quid pro quo for Abbas’ deferring the Goldstone report for 6 months. The US PLO bilateral talks last week were about the terms of reference for I-P negotiations, and the PLO was apparently looking for a settlement freeze, a timetable by which negots must be completed and formal US acknowledgement that the basis of the two states is the 1967 borders.

I don’t know what they got, but it was apparently big enough for Abbas to take all this flak over Goldstone, which can’t make Netanyahu very happy about what kind of talks he is getting manoeuvred into. Nothing like an eruption of violence over the holy sites to dispel the threat of talks you don’t want to be in anyway.

    It worked for Sharon.

Thanks tree. I had an accident in the early part of this year (spinal cord injury) which has put me out of circulation somewhat. I’m making a lot of progress, but it does take over your life. I feel like I don’t do anything except rehab at the moment. Hopefully by the end of the year I’ll get back into doing other things.

Anyway, it’s nice to be missed!

    Best wishes,
    Diane

  9. Ira,
I liked your last post here, which I think was the reading suggestion list.

Would you be willing to facilitate a group read of one of the books? A chapter every couple days, with discussion?

Raed Salah, head of the Islamic Movement, has been arrested for incitement by Israel.

This will calm things down. Not.

The situation is once again tense, but did no one else see the humor in Ahmed Tibi’s observation that “Not all Jews are smart”?
