A night-flower by any other name would smell as obnoxious

MJ Rosenberg joins the battle between Steve Walt and Rob't Satloff over the true aims of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and says the thinktank is just a "cutout" for the Israel lobby.

I was working at AIPAC and it was Steve Rosen who cleverly came up with the idea for an AIPAC controlled think-tank that would put forth the AIPAC line but in a way that would disguise its connections.

There was no question that WINEP was to be AIPAC's cutout. It was funded by AIPAC donors, staffed by AIPAC employees, and located one door away, down the hall, from AIPAC Headquarters (no more. It has its own digs). It would also hire all kinds of people not identified with Israel as a cover and would encourage them to write whatever they liked on matters not related to Israel. "Say what you want on Morocco, kid." But on Israel, never deviate more than a degree or two.

So why does it matter?

It matters because the media has totally fallen for this sleight of hand and WINEP spokespersons appear (especially on PBS) as if WINEP was not part of the Israel lobby.

So Satloff is engaging in pure subterfuge in telling Steve Walt that all we do around here is think about Morocco. This is why I often call the lobby a conspiracy, in the sense of the word that Lincoln used when he saw a conspiracy of the slave interest pervading our politics. There are a number of players and when you call them out they deny their role.

The problem is that the media know perfectly well what WINEP is and knowingly go along with the deceit, giving it more credibility by doing so.

  2. You go further than Walt in calling “the lobby” a conspiracy.

I think you are careless in that language, gambling.

Whether or not the “lobby” is technically a “conspiracy”, or merely a secretive organization involved in covert operations is somewhat irrelevant. The crucial point is that the lobby misrepresents itself (surprise, surprise!) in order to achieve unstated objectives. Power operates best in the shadows. Of course the corporate media are complicit! It’s how they earn their profit!

Creative protest or hurtful provocation? Residents of the religious settlement of Otniel were in for an unexpected surprise Saturday after “hosting” a group of 15 leftist activists, including a woman who they say took her clothes off in a residential neighborhood.”

If this information is available as open source information, then it’s clear that mere politics are preventing the FBI and American patriots from taking action against AIPAC.

This article clearly shows that AIPAC operates like an espionage agency, with front companies, deceptive tactics and ulterior motives in tow.

It’s time someone with the power to do so registered AIPAC as a foreign lobby organization. It’s also time for the IRS to investigate them.

PBS is airing a program in honor of Yom Hashoah (Jewish Remembrance Day for the Holocaust) tonight. I received this in my inbox:

There is a program airing Monday evening, April 12th at 10:00 PM on WTTW which addresses the question: did any Arabs help Jews during the Holocaust? It is based on a book written by Robert Satloff, an American Jewish historian, who decided after 9/11 to research whether during WW II there were Arab rescuers. His research concerns mainly the countries of North African: Moroco, Algeria and Tunisia. As a result of Satloff’s research, a North African Arab, Khaled Abdul Wahab, was nominated for inclusion at Yad Vashem as one of the “righteous among the nations.”

The WTTW program guide has the following description of the program: “Did any Arabs save Jews during the Holocaust? Seeking a response to the plague of Holocaust denial in the Arab world, Robert Satloff, head of a respected Washington policy center, set off in the wake of 9/11 on what would become an eight-year journey to find an Arab hero whose story would change the way Arabs view Jews, themselves and their own history.”

Taking this with Netanyahu’s incendiary speech at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, the RW continues to mine the Holocaust for political capital.
