Why is the White House sending its Iran negotiator to a neocon conference in D.C.?

Well because that's where the power is. The permanent Establishment in D.C. has a neoconservative flavor right now, Obama has to truckle to those folks. (Ask me why later.) The Foundation for Defense of Democracies is a neoconservative shop. It takes a hawkish stance on confronting Iran. The Obama aide is Gary Samore. The press release below. Two Israelis are confirmed speakers. Where's the American realist? Where's Trita Parsi of the National Iranian American Council?

Washington, D.C. (December 8, 2010)- On Monday, December 6th, Iran refused to discuss its nuclear program in its latest round of negotiations with Western powers. As in past talks that failed to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear program, U.S. and European leaders are once again facing long odds. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, FDD will devote its annual Washington Forum, which takes place December 8-10 in Washington, D.C., to Countering the Iranian Threat. U.S., European, and Israeli diplomats, members of Congress, intelligence specialists, military officials, and proliferation experts will explore the nature of the Iranian regime, and the policy options available to confront it.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Dr. Gary Samore, White House Coordinator of weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), Counter-terrorism and Arms Control
  • Representative Pete Hoekstra (R-MI), Ranking Member, House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence
  • Representative Ted Deutch (D-FL), Member, Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Judiciary
  • Ambassador Uri Lubrani, Iran Advisor to Israel’s Ministry of Defense and Israeli Ambassador to Iran before the 1979 Revolution
  • Major General Yaakov Amidror, Former Head of the Israel Defense Force's Research and Assessment Division, charged with preparing its National Intelligence Assessment

Obama is clearly sending his negotiator to get his/her marching orders.

  2. Dan Crowther says:

We have a White House Coordinator for Weapons of Mass Destruction? WTF? I suppose if your going to have one, he/she might as well say some sh*t in front of a microphone every once in a while. Also, this has “negotiated feel good moment” written all over it; when Bibi was housing Barry and the O’s the other week- I bet Netanyahu said, “Oh, and we want some face time with some mucky-mucks talking about Iran sometime soon.”

  3. Israel is pulling out all the stops.

Don’t these guys get tired of making fools of themselves in public?

  4. Ian says:

Iran has not decided to build a nuclear weapon according to a leaked cable of Tauscher’s visit in December 2009:

    (S) Turning to his crystal ball, Gilad was not sure
Tehran had decided it wants a nuclear weapon — but is
“determined” to obtain the option to build one.

Israel does not want Iran to have breakout ability because then Israel cannot act with impunity. However, it is too late!

    • Shingo says:

“Iran has not decided to build a nuclear weapon according to a leaked cable of Tauscher’s visit in December 2009:”

Which means that the 2007 NIE is still pretty much current, evben though the new NIE is being delayed.

Another cable revealed that Israel’s fear is not that Iran would use a nuke if they had one, but that the existence of an Iran nukes would intice Israeli Jews to leave Israel and put Jews off from moving to Israel.

      • Citizen says:

The US MSM has said nothing about the delay of the new NIE. Just another pink elephant dancing in the room in a tutu.

Unless, of course, Israel demands that the U.S. close its doors to Israeli Jews, as the settler-entity pressured Germany to do a few year ago when so many Soviet Jews preferred to emigrate there rather than to Israel. Likewise, during WW II Zionist leaders nixe4 deals with Nazi Germany* that would have allowed Eastern European Jewry to attain sanctuary in the West. Seems that as far as Zionist leaders are concerned, the only Jews they’re concerned with are those who either commit to living in Israel or, if they prefer to live elsewhere, remain staunch supporters of the settler-entity.

        • Unless, of course, Israel demands that the U.S. close its doors to Israeli Jews,

would that demand include these Jews:
          Stuart Levey
          Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
          Dennis Ross
          Howard Berman
          Brad Sherman
          Charles Schumer
          Abraham Foxman
          Alan Dershowitz
          Sheldon Adelson
          Haim Saban
          Edger Bronfman
          William Kristol
          David Makovsky
          Robert Satloff
          etc
          etc
          etc

or would Israel be happy to see these people maintain their status in the US, where they advance Israel’s interests at the expense of Americans?

        • annie says:

these people are all americans PG, israel would have no authority to do this nor would it be in their interest.

        • Potsherd2 says:

It’s interesting to conside how US Jewish organizations might react to this – which is of course what US politicians respond to, not the Israeli government itself.

I would like to see the story about AIPAC denying asylum to Jewish refugees.

      • Its interesting.Arabs can live ,Arabs dont think of leaving for some other destinations ,despite Isarel hvaing nukes, despite Israel attacking with impunity Arabs so many times but Israel is viscerally frightened of Arabs ( Jordan was told to forget to acquire civilian neuclear technology last year by Israel-USA) or Iran having nukes. Is it fear out of guilt,is it the distilled effects of Israeli propagnda? Israeli know that some one will always bail them out. Thye always will have a place to move to. ( a myth on disperasl will grow around this development if it came to pass).
Or do Israeli love life and luxuries of life more than the Arabs do? there is something profoundly wrong with this possibility that Israel will lose its citizen to some other countries in case of Iraian nuclear capability.

To believe that there is a a political bifurcation is a fatal error, because you are constantly being surprised by what occurs. There is no left and right, conservative – liberal when it comes to the essential makeup of the power and offices in Washington DC. Once you understand this than you can move forward in an appropriate fashion . If people insist on making these distinctions, you have accepted the mindset that you are daily fed, your toast.

    • To believe that there is a a political bifurcation is a fatal error, because you are constantly being surprised by what occurs.

Ha, what’s that definition of “insanity” that we always hear? : Doing the same thing again and again, and expecting different results?

Iran has every right to enrich uranium under the Non proliferation treaty. the latest NIE and the head of the IAEA have not found any hard evidence that Iran is enriching uranium beyond the levels that they are legally able under the NPT.

What no one is talking about is how Israel continues to refuse to sign the NPT. Along with Pakistan and India.
