We have great news: As of today Mondoweiss is a project of the Center for Economic Research and Social Change. CERSC is a great fit for us because the Center is fearlessly dedicated to ideas that are outside the mainstream. With the help of Anthony Arnove, it is best known for its pathbreaking publishing arm, Haymarket Books, which has published Omar Barghouti, Noam Chomsky, Arundhati Roy, Wallace Shawn, Amy Goodman, Dennis Brutus, Amira Hass, and Ilan Pappe, among others.
The CERSC partnership ends our two-year relationship with the Nation Institute. We are grateful to the Institute for helping us to establish ourselves and grow in the years after the Gaza conflict, and for helping to publish our book on the Goldstone Report. We are especially thankful to Hamilton Fish, the former director of the Nation Institute, for his vision and bravery in bringing us in.
We expect great things of this partnership. CERSC has intellectual courage, it is used to daring thinking, and it will help us to get to the next level, both in substance and influence. This is a day of celebration for us because we are gaining an enthusiastic partner, with whom we hope to grow and learn. Soon we’ll announce a fundraiser to launch the relationship-- today we’re popping corks.
Wow best of luck with it. Hopefully Mondoweiss will continue to grow. Just checked out the Center for Economic Research and Social Change and certainly looks like great organisation.

I read the Atzmon article he posted the other day, and he made some good points, that I think you recognize. The man has seen it and you can feel his writing – it’s tough, but sincere. At any rate, I think he makes some solid arguments against the occupation and oppressors.

OT…but since is what you’re up against, you have to watch the Surfin’ Synagogue Rabbi Nachum Shifren on the steps of the Dearborn City Hall four days ago calling Blacks and Muslims in the audience low-level scum and utter every prejudicial item in the book (you’re all on welfare, no jobs, too stupid to hold one, can’t read, can’t write, useful idiots, all on drugs, ruining this country, using our freedoms to destroy us, killing whites, infecting the minds of our “yutes”). (He was there with Quran-burning Terry Jones.)
The website is a hate Islam site….part of my homework on what’s happening around the country ;-). You gotta’ watch this because it is so over-the-top, he makes Pamela Geller look like a Girl Scout. The honking is because the radio told people to drive downtown to drown him out. Shifren claims he’s going to Europe to take this message to it from America.

The new publisher CERSC says : Mondoweiss is a news website devoted to covering American foreign policy in the Middle East, chiefly from a progressive Jewish perspective. (bold added, eG)
So it’s Jewish here. It’s a we-Jews-will-solve-the-problem site. Is what the publisher says. Any mooser and dershowitz is in this together: we jews. A non-jew, goy and gentile is tolerated as far as is tolerated, don’t take anything for granted. Freedom for Palestine is a Jewish gift. Not a human right.
eGuard, get a grip! The key term is “progressive” surely. I don’t know if you’re Jewish or not, but if you are, try and get over it a bit.
Unfortunately, I think eGuard’s point is well-taken. The key term was Jewish, modified by the term progressive. The I-P issue is a Jewish problem abetted by fawning, unquestioning and massive US financial and political support. Mondoweiss, with the support of what I see as a relatively small minority of righteous Jews and righteous non-Jews is making a valiant but still largely marginal attempt to change this ghastly situation. While some of the dialogue on Mondoweiss deals with important “Jewish” issues as they relate to I-P, most of the dialogue involves debate over factual and legal issues that transcend religion and its inherent irrationality, and deal with issues of US policy and politics in the Middle East, including the I-P issue. The proponents of these positions don’t deserve to have their positions characterized as stemming from some irrational religious or tribal perspective, be it Jewish, Muslim or Christian.
I suspect many Jews who participate might also find it insulting to have their intellectual contributions characterized (or minimized) as progressively Jewish, just as I would not want mine characterized (and thereby diminished) as progressively atheist, or progressively Irish-Catholic. I also don’t think that the many non-Jewish contributors to Mondoweiss, Muslim, Christian, Atheist and other, will take kindly to it being described as having a progressive Jewish perspective which comes across as exclusive. While issues of religion and tribalism are certainly part of the I-P debate, I’ve always felt Mondoweiss was about truth and that one’s religion or tribe (or lack of) had no place in the debate. Perhaps I’m naïve, but I’ve always thought Mondoweiss was inclusive and non-tribal.
In any case, congratulations, it sounds like a good fit. You might want to work on that site description though. It seems too exclusive and too tribal unless you see yourselves competing with Tablet, Jewish Daily Forward and +972 rather than part of the larger fray including Atlantic, Daily Beast, Salon, Politico, etc. I hope you have set your sights higher than that of another Jewish news outlet, as good as those other publications are. To win this war, your audience needs to be not just Jewish America, but Middle America which is at least 30 times larger.

I’ve also felt that Mondoweiss was (and remains) about truth. Unfortunately, the tribal (collective) mentality is a significant feature of being Jewish, in the sense that if one is a Jew, one should not criticize fellow Jews–a feature which figures prominently in the I-P debate. (Note that another aspect of the tribal mentality is that a Jew should refrain from actions that could subject the group to criticism by non-Jews–a feature that the Israeli desire for the lands of others has conveniently overridden.)
As you know, Phil and Adam have very courageously addressed both of these collective injunctions as have many others (Jews and non-Jews) here on Mondoweiss.
As have you, I have always felt that both Jews and non-Jews who seek a fair and just setttlement of the conflict are welcome here, and that both will be needed in large numbers to turn the tide.
I also agree that Mondoweiss’s mission is far more than merely to offer a “progressive Jewish” perspective and that to describe it as such could be seen as offensive by many Mondoweiss readers.

The perspective at mondo in my view is quite plain: to day- after-day document Israeli atrocities towards Palestinians and to publish news, opinion, and dicussion that drive forward the goals of getting rid of the Occupation, and the Zionist Lobby in America.
I appreciate what you and eGuard are getting at: the sense of Jewish exceptionalism and entitlement that is seen every day on mondo and that drives righteous Jews and non-Jews wild.
But this demented perspective is not the perspective that Phil and Adam have chosen.
well, nobody said mondoweiss merely offered a progressive jewish prospective. it says ‘chiefly from a jewish prospective’ and that makes sense because both adam and phil are jewish. they don’t leave their jewishness at the door and one of phil’s goals is to stimulate a much needed dialogue within the jewish community. it’s an honest assessment and i’ve always admired and valued the honesty and guts published here, whether it come from a jewish, arab or any other perspective.
people can’t divorce themselves from who they are or their origins nor should they. i’m all for embracing those origins and recognizing how who we are impacts and in many cases empowers us. let’s not find offense where there’s no imperative to be offended. i’m all over these threads and i’m not jewish and nothing about that introduction offends me in the least.
i wake up everyday grateful this site is here. so whether it is an american door or a jewish door i’m walking thru it makes no difference to me, the door is open and welcoming. let’s not quibble on this celebratory thread. we’re all mondoweiss!

The word “Jewish” ended up in the CERSC description not by accident. What I can trust: at the end of the day, a contribution will be jugded by the jewishness of its author. Already, patm did so in the morning of the day.
