That hateful Rachel Abrams rant against Palestinians continues to resonate, in large part because she's the wife of Elliott Abrams. You know that the neocons are on the run because J Street, which usually avoids hot topics, has issued a sharp condemnation of the remarks, saying that they put Abrams and the Emergency Committee for Israel outside the "pro-Israel" community. Well I'll take anything I can get to push the neocons out of the discourse. Jeremy Ben-Ami:
“J Street is appalled by the unhinged rant filled with incitement and hate speech posted this past week by the founder of the Emergency Committee for Israel, Rachel Abrams, on her personal blog....
It is bad enough that the Emergency Committee for Israel already has a proven track record of making Israel a wedge issue in American politics. If they hope to have any credible claim to a place in the pro-Israel community, they must cut ties with Ms. Abrams immediately.
If they don’t, we call on politicians and community leaders to refuse any further connection with ECI.”
I see that J Street doesn't like that the Emergency Committee has politicized support for Israel. That's the part I like: getting Israel into the political debate...

Now maybe they can be gotten to take a stand against Marty Peretz’s next unhinged rant.
And the Dersh’s. And — too much to ask — Bibi’s or Lieberman’s.
It would be good catch. Then they could go after advocates of “Samson options” in Freeman Center for Strategic studies, and then we could prepare a longer list.
J Street only objects to the “posting” – not the actual comments.
J street is whack. They are kind of like a rapist who uses a condom………
It’s nice. It’s going to cause them to be cautious for 3 months but it’s nice. Neoconservatism has been obnoxious and indefensible since the beginning to those paying attention but this kind of talk makes it easy to explain to everybody.
That’s the part I like: getting Israel into the political debate…
me too
… the Emergency Committee for Israel already has a proven track record of making Israel a wedge issue in American politics.
I’m actually glad about that. I like to hear politicians’ unhinged support for Israel straight from their mouths. Then I know who to ignore, oppose, or ridicule.
I would rather have the likes of Abrams as advocates for Israel than the likes of Ben-Ami. Why? It’s easier. With hypocrites like Ben-Ami the job of countering their tribalism and biases is harder. Ben-Ami also prefers to exclude Palestinians from the discussion concerning Israel’s policies. He doesn’t support BDS.
Did Foxman at ADL chime in yet?
I think his computer broke, and he did not get the news yet.
He was pretty fast after Helen Thomas’s infinitely milder anti-Zionist remarks went viral (reminder: she did NOT say ‘go back to Auschwitz’, neither did the passenger on the Mavi Marmara, as suggested on the fake tape issued by the IDF) In fact, the country was in the grip of a full-scale witch hunt, if I remember correctly. Is HT more important than RA?
I think this will blow over fast and be handled ‘internally’, within the Jewish community. Liberal Zionist putting the brakes on off-the-scale Zionist in order not to scare the masses. In the same way, the Dersh sharply criticized the Fox for his bigoted views on the so-called ‘Ground Zero Mosque’. It’s just damage control
I agree with Avi_G and Antidote on this; Ben-Ami is a hypocrite on this issue and simply doing some damage control for the Zionists.
“Did Foxman at ADL chime in yet?”
The vile toad won’t say a word because that piece of filth Abrams was defaming Arabs. If anything, that fat bastard probably agrees with her.

Cynical, cynical me:
Today US recalls the Syrian Ambassador.
Last week US wants troops out of Iraq by December 31, 2011
Today J Street burnishes extremist fringe Emergency Committee for Israel’s existence by asking them to sever ties with ‘hate’ instead of J Street severing ties with the hateful anti-American ECI. (We need an emergency committee to use up US resources, purloin congressional attention, and tap our treasury and military for Israel?)
Is Israel readying to attack Iran?
or syria now that libya’s on the ‘right track’.
Why on earth would Israel attack Syria right now? it makes absolutely zero sense. Israel is going to sit back and let everything play out.
Anyways, Nasrallah says everything has passed and all is good in Syria.
you’re right i was being lazy. i meant the US or nato attacking syria. why now you ask? because we like imposing birthpangs and new regimes.
I hope not.
when has israel ever done the sensible thing?
“Anyways, Nasrallah says everything has passed and all is good in Syria.”
You zionists have learned a lesson good and well: you take Nasrallah’s words seriously. And amazingly, though you don’t speak Arabic, you understand him perfectly well :-)
I read a very interesting article about drones
link to nybooks.com
“Given that more than forty countries around the world are now experimenting with military robots of their own, the United States cannot rest on the assumption that it will retain a monopoly over this technology forever. The day when US forces are attacked by a drone—perhaps even one operated by a terrorist—is not far away”
I wonder if one of these will be part of the surprise Hizballah has for Israel.
Check the map, annie: link to maps.google.com
With Syria neutralized, Israel can fly their F-15s (with the 55 5,000-lb. US-made GBU-28 bunker-busting bombs made for F-15s attached) right over Syrian airspace, over friendly Mosul right into Tehran.
They can get Syria on the way back.
Watch what a bunker-buster can do:

ha! i was just checking the map MRW.
With Syria neutralized, Israel can fly their F-15s (with the 55 5,000-lb. US-made GBU-28 bunker-busting bombs made for F-15s attached) right over Syrian airspace, over friendly Mosul right into Tehran.
i still think the US or nato would do the neutralizing for the iran end game which of course includes chopping off territory from several countries for the new robust neo/lib/con friendly kurdistan.
Syria’s air defense is already proven ineffective against the IAF, but why even bother. They’d just go through Saudi Arabia, who would be happy to open their airspace against their not so new regional enemy.
MRW, have you read MOA
With Gaddhafi gone the Lidless Eye of NATO turns to its next target, Syria, for a repeat of the successful model that was applied in Libya. But the plan for Syria has a flaw in that it depends on Turkey. But attacks by Kurds can press Turkey to abandon the plan.

I don’t like this development, annie. This is waaay too much agita cooked up in a short period of time for the death of 3,000 protestors in a country of 21 million. What was our Ambassador doing taking the anti-Assad forces’ side, and issuing harsh condemnations of the Syrian government? He’s not a diplomat? He did it on instruction.
We didn’t recall our Saudi Ambassador after 9/11, nor the Afghani one.
What the hell’s going on? The only country that benefits from all this is Israel. It’s destabilizing.
The only country that benefits from all this is Israel. It’s destabilizing.
read the asiatimes alister cook article at that link. SA could be salivating too.
Then, of course, the 7.2 earthquake hit the largely Kurdish region of eastern Turkey. 1,000 dead, so far.
yes i know. there are limits wrt what i write on websites tho. i don’t generally hold back on my imaginings.
coincidences aren’t part of my preferred choice of options unless a bird drops its load on my head while i’m taking a shit in the woods or something.
This is waaay too much agita cooked up in a short period of time for the death of 3,000 protestors in a country of 21 million.
Wow.
please, please, please don’t blame the earthquake on Israel :)
Cook’s article doesn’t mention Israel at all. And his ‘theory’ contradicts the whole Israel/PKK/Middle East domination theory also.
Thanks, annie. Crooke’s article multo-interesting. The cast of outside characters dicking with people’s lives and futures. I’m getting more radicalized as a I breathe. I found Crooke’s article much clearer than MOA.
[What a buried tidbit: "Sarkozy's wife enlisting Bernard Henri-Levy, the arch promoter of the Benghazi Transitional Council model that had been so effective in inflating North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) into an instrument of regime change." Not only the arch promoter, the arch Israel-First Uber-Zionist. This ain't gonna end well, as Crooke intimates could happen. None of the stakeholders, the ordinary people, in these countries have a goddam say in their own future.]
I don’t look at coincidences. I look at the grouting between the tiles, and timing. Things can get stopped in their tracks and then people/governments take actions they didn’t think through, and didn’t have a plan for, so there is a short-term result we anticipated and a long-term consequence we didn’t. Our military and government strategic planning—just listen to the insufferable Thomas Barnett—is extrapolating the present into the future, and acting on what we determine. Straight out of Mother Goose; hence, the forever oh-oh “unintended consequences” excuse. We don’t design our future, and we don’t involve the stakeholders: us . . . and them.
please, please, please don’t blame the earthquake on Israel :)
The point of mentioning it, AND the regional suffering they are experiencing flew right over your head.
The earthquake happened two days after this in the southeastern region of Turkey on the Iraqi border:

“please, please, please don’t blame the earthquake on Israel”
If God rewards bad behaviour with quakes, Israel is a goner.
So we can rule out divine intervention.
it was in the predominately Kurdish east. No wonder Erdogan declined all international help, he doesn’t want the world to see what he is doing to the Kurds.
I found Crooke’s article much clearer than MOA.
well, they were meant to be read together. also i’ve been reading b for years so i understand the way he thinks, communicates and am used to his sometimes imprecise or challenged english. the awesome thing about b is he’s generally a step ahead of the game by a long shot. he’s based out of hamburg and is incredibly smart and connected. i respect him a lot. his analysis if often spot on and he thinks completely differently than an american. the part about the assassination of Mashaal Tammo is nothing you would ever read here (probably because the ptb WANT the syrian kurds to rise up as a result of this assassination, the opposite of what assad wants)..but we’ll see who’s right.
anyway, b schooled me in foreign policy for years, i had many of my awakenings there. time and again he’s been right. i’ve met him too, great guy.
DBG :
Someone has fooled you in good time. There are elements in Iran that S-A dont like that much, but enemy label…..thats way too exaggerated. Biggest reason why S-A is at odds with Iran…..
No, on the second thought, find out yourself.
Annie . . . Ah! Didn’t realize English was a second language with him. I read him a lot a couple of years ago.
DBG is dying for tel aviv to be pancaked. Just to prove a point on MW.
“Syria’s air defense is already proven ineffective against the IAF, but why even bother. They’d just go through Saudi Arabia, who would be happy to open their airspace against their not so new regional enemy.”
WARMONGER WARMONGER WARMONGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Taxi, you do realize that it was a response to Annie and MRW’s talk about going through Syria.
Good try, but you kinda looked silly there.
Mig I am sure in your mind it has something to do with the US and/or Israel. Because they of course are the root of all evil. I am sure in your mind it has nothing to do w/ the Sunni/Shia divide and their fight to control influence over the ME after the fall of Egypt.
who exactly is going to ‘pancake’ Tel Aviv? more war-mongering Taxi? I want peace not war. I am sick of war.
That was also a Mossad black flag operation, blaming mother nature!!!
It was a Mossad false flag operation, blamimg it on mother nature!!
I saw Nir Rosen on AJE the other night suggesting that natural processes might not be enough and that there might well be a Turkish intervention, without other Nato participation, in Syria.
I know a government is responsible Theo, but I think it was the Turks who made the earth shake. It is a predominately Kurdish area.
” I want peace not war. I am sick of war.”
So what are you doing to get the war mongering Israeli Jews to stop their multi-generational war on the Arabs in general and on the Palestinians in particular? It is rather galling for a supporter of the aggressor state to complain about war. There’s been a peace plan on offer by the Arabs for a decade and the fucking Israelis won’t even talk about it. Why are you hear, attacking people who are standing up for the victims, if you hate war so much? Why aren’t you on the pro-Israeli sites bashing them for Israel’s failure to accept the Arab peace deal?? (Or is it only a peace on Israel’s terms, which turns the Palestinians into slaves, in their own land, subject to the whim of the invading occupier, that constitutes “peace” in your mind???)
DBG :
It has absolutely nothing to do with US or Israel. Try again.
Issue was S-A vs. Iran.
Right, it doesnt have anything to do with Sunni/Shia relations. Now you can continue your errors. But 1 point for at least trying something. Carry on. Try again.
The Arab peace plan is a great idea, why don’t the Palestinians sit down and hash it out?
nailed it
“The Arab peace plan is a great idea, why don’t the Palestinians sit down and hash it out?”
Because the Israelis have not indicated that they will accept it, so the call for talk is nothing more than a ruse to occupy the Palestinians and the world while the greedy Israelis steal more Palestine. (Imagine a man is raping your wife, and the rapists’ partner asks you not to call the police or take any action, but to “sit down and hash it out.” You now have an idea of what you are asking the Palestinians to do.)
But the real question is “why don’t the Israelis accept it?” It gives them everything they CLAIM they want. But it would prevent them from continuing to oppress the Palestinians and would require them to abandon their plans for the Greater israeli Empire. (I guess the fact that they have to give up their blood lust and land greed maybe that’s why they don’t accept it…)
LOL, you have it all figured out mig, don’t ya.
DBG :
Palestinians sit down ? That Arab peace plan was directed to Israel, and tell us what Israeli response was ? ( offer has given twice )
And i agree, that plan is great. Sorry that in Israel nobody gives a thought. So much from that offer.
mig, it is a great basis for a negotiation. is Israel just supposed to put everything down and agree to it with our an coordination or negotiation with the Palestinians?
Right now they won’t even sit down with Israel to discuss it. Bibi has mentioned he’d sit down and talk based on ’67 borders, he also offered a governmental freeze of all building in the WB/EJ.
you guys can talk about past plans until you are blue in the head, nothing will happen without direct negotiations.
“nothing will happen without direct negotiations”, said DBG.
WELL NOTHING HAS HAPPENED AFTER SIXTY FRIGGING YEARS OF DIRECT NEGOTIATIONS YOU FRIGGING RACIST THIEVING ETHNIC CLEANSER!
BUZZ OFF WITH YOUR DESPICABLE PROPAGANDA!
YOU’RE AN INSIDIOUS INVIDIOUS WARMONGER!
What does Israel do the day after?
Israel has no answer to the fact that nobody in the Middle East with the possible exception of the Lebanese Maronites and the Saudi Royal family has any time for it.
“is Israel just supposed to put everything down and agree to it with our an coordination or negotiation with the Palestinians?”
I am certain that if the Israel’s announced an acceptance of the Arab Peace Deal and asked for meetings with Palestinians to coordinate on the withdraw of Israeli gunmen, for example, they would have no problem. What they want is to freeze the Palestinians in negotations. which is to the Israeli’s benefit. Having been fooled by the Israelis for 15 years into pointless “negotiatiosn”, why would Palestinains do so again, without firm committments by the Israelis?
“Right now they won’t even sit down with Israel to discuss it.”
They did so for 15 years after Oslo and Israeli stonewalled (and continue to steal Palestinian lands.) If all Israeli will offer is more talk, what is the point?
“Bibi has mentioned he’d sit down and talk based on ’67 borders,”
BFD. Talk is nothing. Netanyahoo also said that he would never allow a real Palestinian state. Why would the Palestinians give Netanyahoo a political victory is he is not willing to make firm commitments ahead of time?
“he also offered a governmental freeze of all building in the WB/EJ.”
So? He won’t freeze all buidling in the West Bank and Arab sections of al Quds, and certainly won’t roll back the colonies, so this means nothign more than that the invading horde of Israeli Jews will continue under private hands.
“you guys can talk about past plans until you are blue in the head, nothing will happen without direct negotiations.”
And the Israelis had 15 years of direct negotiations and the Palestinians got nothing more than more Israelis polluting their land with their theft. If the Israelis aren’t going to make clear concessions and commitments ahead of time, then the Palestinians should pursue other options.
Woody,
Please tell that disgustingly radical zionist nation-thief DBG that MOST SETTLEMENT BUILDINGS ARE PRIVATELY FUNDED – THAT BIBI’S LYING-TONGUE IS ONLY ‘TALKING’ ABOUT PARTIAL FREEZING OF GOVERNMENT FUNDED SETTLEMENTS.
Pardon my capitalization and pardon me too my friend for asking you to deliver a neglected FACT to the rrrrrradical rrrrrracist zionist called DBG. I’m not in the mood to talk to trashed-out criminals tonight.
seafoid,
Most lebanese maronites wanna destroy israel with their bare hands.
It’s only a small fraction of a faction that wanna deal with israel and not for the love of zionism believe me – but for the love of money and guns that they hope to get from usa.
Taxi, I am going to take the same approach I have taken with Chaos. talk all the trash you want, I am done responding to your attacks on me.
DBG :
Not all, but pretty close. That “rift” between S-A and Iran started Iran revolution. Now, i guess you can find out rest of the story by yourself. Try wiki, mentioned there.
DBG, you can ignore whoever you want, but the points made by various people still stand. Netanyahu’s freeze is meaningless and without firm guarantees of a state along the 67 borders (except for mutually agreed upon changes) why should the Palestinians talk? Obama caved in to Netanyahu, so he’s not someone the Palestinians can rely on.
“talk all the trash you want, I am done responding to your attacks on me.”
Haven’t we heard that from you before? How many times? But, damnit, you don’t go!
Sure seems to me like you would be happier at another website. And yet, you never seem to find one you like better than Mondoweiss. I wonder why that is?
DBG :
It is.
Yes. It all begins and ends in Israel.
No they dont.
Semantics. And governmental freeze ain’t enough. All to freeze.
Walk the walk, talk the talk. Now look here. Plenty of many times we have seen that Israeli foot draggin in negotiations. Yes, i know all of those stories what you have heard or read in Israeli media how Israeli negotiators has turned every stone while trying to solve the problem, and get agreement. And then we read that real story how they went.
And i agree completely with you with this need to negotiate, and get negotiated agreement. But one thing is missing in this puzzle, and we wait that puzzle from Israeli side. Action. Partial marriage doesnt exist. Partial freeze isnt that trick. If Israel cant do that before negotiations start, how they can do it later. How they will sell that to the public then, if they cant sell it now.
Let’s see Taxi. I don’t trust the b*stards.
Bashir Jumayyal had lots of followers in his day. There was nonsense in 2006 as well.
Who cares ’bout your ladeeda “approach”?! I’m attacking your racism buster! And I’ll keep doing it to you and to other ethnic-cleansing lying justifying enablers.
NO SIREE YOU AIN’T WINNING THE WAR OF IDEAS HERE ON MW AND YOU SURE AIN’T GONNA BE WINNING ANY WARS ON THE BATTLEFIELDS NEITHER.
Viva Palestina!
Seafoid,
Check out a bit of info on Michel Oun, Lebanese Maronite leader:
link to en.wikipedia.org
He’s only like Nasrallah’s best friend – something the western media don’t want you to know about (and I wonder why uhuh).
A hated enemy for him? Apartheid israel. Naturally.
Driving around south lebanon, where I am visiting presently, you see hundreds of portraits of Nasrallah and Michel in the same frame, down the streets of moslem villages as well as the streets of christian villages.
seafoid,
You might be thinking of this old Lebanese maronite trollop:
link to en.wikipedia.org
Samir Geagea (pronouced Ga3ga3), has nominal, laughable support even within the christian community.
Oh yeah he’s the kinda maronite the west usually likes to refer to as the ‘christian’ opposition to Nasrallah.
Mig, it all boils down to Shia/Sunni relations
link to en.wikipedia.org
Everything DBG knows of Islam comes from Fox News, apparently, if Mr. “Interfaith” doesn’t actually understand Middle Eastern international politics versus religious sects. The mosque in my place of birth had a Shia imam for a predominantly Sunni congregation.
The House of Saud are Capitalists before they are Muslims, DBG. If your constant “Sunni Shia” refrain made any sense at all Hezbollah wouldn’t exist as the political powerhouse it does and you wouldn’t be talking out the other side of your mouth about Syria controlling Hezbollah or Iran controlling Hamas.
The only consistency in your droning on about Muslims, DBG, is you pick whatever description at the time paints them in the worst light. There isn’t even anything nuanced about your bigotry, you’re just anti-Muslim across the board and you’re willing to look like a fool JUST so you can say anti-Muslim things. You don’t look intellectual or informed at all DBG. Not even slightly.
No, its not Shia/Sunni relations. I’ll help you a bit :
link to en.wikipedia.org
No DBG it DON’T “boils down to Shia/Sunni relations”!
Stirring sectarian strife with your usual WARMONGERING DBG? AGAIN?! Ya drooling at more DISTRACTING wars in the middle east so you can just keep STEALING more land cuz ya think god told ya so?
Ever heard of something called ASSERTION OF POWER that’s part of the HUMAN CONDITION and part of any regional configuration? You got any idea how utterly racist and dumb you sound with every predictable quote from your revolting zionist hasbara bible?
Ya think you can just keep trolling out your garbage colonialist racism and fascist islamophobia around here without people putting their foot down and saying: STOP RIGHT THERE BUSTER FREAKSTER?!
You ever even simply SAT in a room with an actual sunni and a shia?
I bet my farm you never EVER have cuz you’re such a manicured supremist chickenshit you’d run away a mile in a nano second if the room had a coupla brown-skinned goy relaxing peacefully in it – whatever religion they may be!
Taxi
I remember him from the early 90s. He started off another leg of the civil war by himself and was exiled to France or somewhere. He’s a chancer. Isn’t the Christian community in Lebanon split between the Hezb and the establishment ?
Seafoid,
The lebanese christians are divided when it comes to Syria’s influence and other internal politicized issues.
But they’re pretty much ALL against Apartheid israel. And for good reason: the idf has killed their family members and destroyed many of their businesses during the invasion.
Mig, you honestly think the Shia/Sunni divide has nothing to do with it?
why should the Palestinians talk?
because they want a state and w/ out talks there will be no change.
“because they want a state and w/ out talks there will be no change.”
They’ve been talking for a generation and there has been no change, and there is no indication from the Israelis that there will be any change in the future, aside from the Israeli position of “Surrender to us now and quietly accept whatever we decide to give you and don’t you dare complain about it.”
Continuing to talk without a fundamental attitude adjustment by the Israelis benefits the Israelis and penalizes the Palestinians, and there are other options, including bringing international pressure to bear, pushing for voting rights in the Israeli government, and others, none of which are possible if the charade of “talk” goes on.
So, again, why should they talk?
DBG,
Did you read ANY of the above posts that address your precious ‘talk’?
Evidently NOT!!!!
So why don’t you go talk to the hand or talk to the finger: your choice!
The EXACT choice your murdering ethnic cleansing zionism has been giving to the suffering Palestinians for DECADES!
so what should they do Woody? continue an armed struggle which has failed for 60 years? sit back and let Israel colonize the entire WB? trust that their supporters in the international community will get them a deal? trust that BDS will bring Israel to it’s knees?
DBG,
Your scumy propaganda continues!
The peaceful protest is crucial but the armed struggle too is VITAL!! The Palestinians are dealing with a buncha nazis let’s face it! Or would you rather 5 million Palestinians were slowly holocausted – as is currently TAKING PLACE!
Hizbollah proved the armed struggled is VITAL! Nay 100% effective.
The nazis were destroyed through the ARMED STRUGGLE!
What you got to say ’bout that then?
“so what should they do Woody? continue an armed struggle which has failed for 60 years? sit back and let Israel colonize the entire WB? trust that their supporters in the international community will get them a deal? trust that BDS will bring Israel to it’s knees?”
What makes talking to a party which has no interest in reaching a reasoanble deal any better than any of these options?
But if you were to ask me, given the way the Zionists freaked out about the UN petition, I would recommend continuing to do that and things like it. I would attempt to leverage international pressure and if the colonization continues, I would move for the South Africa option — one person, one vote. And when the Israelis fight against that, I would press that concept harder.
And if those options failed, I would start again. I wouldn’t take anything off the table, including the armed struggle against Israel and its supporters, but do it world wide. I hope it does not come to that, sincerely, which is why the Israelis should leap to take the Arab peace deal. Because if they believe that there is a chance that this will just go away, they’re nuts.
Well Woody your mentality and people with similar ideas are dooming another 2 or 3 generations of Palestinians.
Correction. Ambassador to Syria recalled last week. Syrian Ambassador to US recalled to Syria today.
RE: “I see that J Street doesn’t like that the Emergency Committee has politicized support for Israel. That’s the part I like: getting Israel into the political debate…” ~ Weiss
MY COMMENT: Fear not, the politicization of support for Israel will continue irrespective of what the Emergency Committee does. The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) and the Christian Zionists are determined to turn the GOP into the GOZP (Grand Old Zionist Party). These folks are “true belivers”. They are in no way “realists”.

I hope this doesn’t shut Rachel up…..she worth millions in free advertising and positive PR for the Palestine cause.
The lobby has had the US State Department and congress very busy for the past two years.
I wonder just how much time they spend on Israel and Jewish problems and how much they spend on actual US business.

Israel Reaches Deal for Release of an American Held in Egypt
By ISABEL KERSHNER
Published: October 24, 2011
JERUSALEM — Israel announced Monday that it had reached an agreement with Egypt, with American assistance, for the release of Ilan Grapel, an American law student from Queens who also holds Israeli citizenship.
Mr. Grapel, who was arrested in Egypt in June and charged with spying for Israel, is to be exchanged for 25 Egyptians, including three minors, held in Israeli jails. Egypt’s state television had a similar announcement Monday, Agence France-Presse reported.
Representative Gary L. Ackerman of New York, a Democrat from Queens, said he had worked to secure the release of Mr. Grapel, 27, a constituent and former intern in Mr. Ackerman’s office, “by personally intervening with the Egyptian Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, the prime minister of Israel and the U.S. State Department.”
Daniel Grapel, Mr. Grapel’s father, told Israeli television on Monday that he was not privy to the details, but was aware that things were happening “behind the scenes.” He said he did not know exactly where and when the exchange would occur.
Ilan Grapel and his family have denied that he had any role in espionage. Egyptian officials also accused him of sedition and inciting protesters to violence. He went to Cairo in May to work for a nonprofit group that helps refugees, his family said. Photographs posted online showed him holding signs at Tahrir Square protests.
Mr. Grapel has made no secret of his Israeli citizenship. On his Facebook page, he displayed pictures of himself in an Israeli military uniform. He was wounded in the 2006 war with Lebanon.
Mr. Ackerman said that from the beginning, he was “assured by the highest levels in Israel that in no way did Ilan have anything to do with espionage, the Mossad or any other type of spy agency.”
Our government does a bang up job for some Jews and Israel –but you
know, I don’t remember it doing a thing about Rachel Corrie or Triston Anderson or the Jewish peace activist girl who got her eye put out.
Between campaigning and collecting money and working for Israel and the zionist it’s understandable they don’t have time for Americans.
BWTTGASO
I would love to know the same thing, American. Considering how little Congress has done for us, what are we talking about here in terms of time? Anyone know what the normal congressional days are per session? I thought they were 129.

Relevant story, not sure what to make of it.
I was working with a campus chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine recently when I was approached by a J Street organizer. She told me that she really appreciated all the work we were doing, and that her organization would like to get more involved in the future and work more with SJP around Palestine. At first I thought her plans were some way to frame the debate, do something stupid like “Why can’t we all just be friends?”, but the more she talked the more I realized she was serious about advocating for Palestinian rights. Now, she’s just one member, so I don’t know how generalizable that is, but still. What’s going on?
“What is going on?”
Perhaps J Street is not evil?
I never said they were evil. It’s just that they seem to be moving to the left at the same time that many Zionist groups are becoming more and more hardliner. I was wondering about the discrepancy.
If liberal Zios are moving to the left it’s because they see it as a more effective way of defending racial supremacy in different circumstances.
Many of the Student chapters of J Street are to the left of the organization as a whole. The woman who approached you may have been expressing her personal interests or the interests of students within her chapter. I have a hard time believing that it was an initiative supported by J Street headquarters. In fact, across the US, Jewish community and campus groups are being told that they will get their funding cut if they co-sponsor events with the wrong sort of people (“delegitimizers”).
I’m against rabid zionists being silenced. I say give ‘em a megaphone and presidential tour bus.
Rats are leaving the sinking ship and lining up for the next round.
Give her a microfone, loud speakers, a pulpit with State Department logo and put her in front of UN.
