Democratic chair Wasserman Schultz said to cancel speech to Muslim voting-rights group under rightwing pressure

Wasserman Schultz
Emerge's original banquet announcement

Breaking: Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chair of the Democratic National Committee and a Florida congresswoman, has apparently bowed out of speaking to a Muslim organization's event under pressure from a right wing campaign.

Emerge is a political organization dedicated to empowering Muslims in Florida. Look at some of the work they do at the link-- stopping an industrial waste site next to a mosque, getting Muslims to vote in elections.

This April Emerge is having its annual banquet in Florida. Its facebook page made this announcement in the last day:

EMERGE USA is happy to announce that Mayor Mohammed Hameeduddin of Teaneck,NJ will be speaking at our April 21st banquet

But you can see the original announcement, as posted by a rightwing group, above. I am told that Debbie Wasserman Schultz has withdrawn under pressure. I just called her office now.

This rightwing pressure group, for instance, slammed Wasserman Schultz for agreeing to appear at the event and cited David Horowitz's Islamophobic organization, Front Page:

FrontPageMag.Com - A radical Muslim group with ties to the Obama Administration will be featuring the head of the Democratic National Committee, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, as the keynote speaker for its annual fundraising banquet this coming April. By agreeing to partake in the event, Wasserman Schultz is helping to further this organization’s nefarious agenda of placing Islamists into positions of American power and influence. It is this stealth jihad which threatens our country not from abroad, but from within.

Here is the Front Page article, with the Israel/Palestine angle:

Wasserman Schultz likes to flaunt her Jewish identity and (false) pro-Israel persona, but how can she begin to do so, when the organization she will be addressing maintains staff who display animosity towards the Jewish state?

Laila Abdelaziz, the Field Coordinator of EMERGE, denounced Israel in a question she posed to President Obama, during a January 2010 town hall meeting he held in Tampa, Florida. “[W]hy have we not condemned Israel and Egypt’s human rights violations against the occupied Palestinian people, and yet we continue supporting them financially with billions of dollars from our tax dollars?” she belligerently asked.

Emerge does not focus on the Israel/Palestine issue. It focuses on domestic issues and voter empowerment issues. But Wasserman Schultz has evidently bowed to pressure from the rightwing. Because she is part of Obama's outreach to the Jewish community. If you go to her official site, the first photograph is of Wasserman Schultz with Netanyahu. Half embracing him. Then a photograph of her at Yad Vashem, the Israeli memorial to the Holocaust in Europe.

I don't know what to say. This is so disheartening it leaves me speechless. And yes, it is about prejudice inside the Jewish community.

    Prejudice or political opportunism?

I’m not a fan of Wasserman-Shultz so you folks take your pick.

I casually browsed the website you linked to, Frontpage, and found this ad:

    link to imageshack.us

I wonder if it’s true. Even if we disregard the organization behind the ad; if it is factually true, doesn’t this concern you? I’m a bit shocked to be frank. I wonder if it’s factually true. If it is, it’s a stunner.

Krauss. Come on anything in Florida with Islam in the name is going to be described as “radical”!

RADICAL? Its about as radical as the MANY Jewish federations in Florida — hmmm — wonder where their money goes?

“….Laila Abdelaziz, the Field Coordinator of EMERGE, denounced Israel in a question she posed to President Obama… OMG.

“…Israeli prisoner Khader Adnan, who according to Israel is a “senior member” of the terrorist group Palestinian Islamic Jihad… Knowing that after all Jonathan Pollard is pure as the driven snow.

Your link — where did it come from — David Horowitz’s Israel’s ‘Terror’ List too? Interesting you didn’t bother to even research where the list could have come from?

If you have proof of EMERGE USA having real terrorist connections — then go for it.

    • I casually browsed the website you linked to, Frontpage, and found this ad:..I wonder if it’s true.

why don’t you casually browse stormfront’s ads and come back and report them to us and tell us how you wonder if they are true. or some neo-nazi site. this could get really entertaining.

and what does this have to do with emerge? this is a threadjack.

plus, after what i know now about the prosecutions of the holyland foundation founders i have absolutely no respect for the witchhunts carried out against muslims in america. ziyad khaleel, for example ran an Islamic charity. he’s dead now so he can’t speak for himself. when they start prosecuting american jews who donate to settlements for funding terrorism let me know, then i might take this crap more seriously.

      • “when they start prosecuting american jews who donate to settlements for funding terrorism let me know, then i might take this crap more seriously.”

If you expect this to happen in your lifetime you better be a whole lot younger than the youthful woman you appear to be in your photo.

Besides, that little word “prosecuting” has a habit of being spelled “persecuting” when it’s applied to those who are not Arabs but who do what those who are Arabs have been prosecuted for doing.

ps. good on you for your efforts at a Palestine conference. i’m eager to hear more about it. Congratulations Annie, you are doing good by doing good.

Frontpage Mag is the one of the most sickening and racist publications I came across in my early days of exploring Israel and US zionism. Don’t even want to click on that site.
My attitude is I don’t care if it’s true or not. AlQ is not different than Zionist terror or US terror except it’s smaller. “If” ALQ is solely responsible for killing 3000 on 911, it’s still less than the Palestines Israelis have killed and a hell of lot less than the Iraqis and Afghans that the US has killed.
Possible ALQ formerly of the US is no more of a stunner than the Zionist agents still in the US. At least they didn’t and don’t occupy positions in our government and congress.

    • Bumblebye says:

Krauss, it’s a load of cobblers, whether or not it’s true.
How many tens of thousands of homegrown and foreign muslim students have gone through US universities in just the past decade? And that’s a list of half a dozen?
Just a bit of perspective required.
Remember when they “all” seemed to be products of British universities and colleges? Even the pantybomber.

    • LeaNder says:

Sand, American, Annie, personally I think Krauss may well be the most interesting case study post-Richard Witty.

For whatever reason Krauss triggers flip-flop in my mind. It may be genuine, but I somehow can’t connect emotionally. Or to stay on the rational level how does his support for Gilad Atzomon’s rehash of the old myth of the Wandering Jew / The Eternal Jew in German lore, connect with his his misuse of Tony Judt via anecdotal evidence without more precise data but much prejudice?

But I guess, we all have our Amalek preferences.

      • LeaNder says:

I will read Atzmon with in combination with a closer look at the old myth of the Wondering Jew. Did Atzmon choose the title, would be an interesting question.

      • LeaNder , flip flop? genuine? hello! he’s a pro that’s all. it’s his job to be ‘interesting’.

      • Krauss says:

Hi LeaNder! It’s always slightly amusing, flattering (and if we are brutually honest, a bit creepy too) to be the focus of someone’s obsessions. I’m impressed of how closely you read my comments!

Surely Annie is right. I bring interest to this site(and apparently fanboys too!).

As for your own comment, it’s a mishmash. You complain that you can’t ‘connect emotionally to me’. This again adds slightly to the creep factor.

Then implicitly say that Atzmon is an anti-Semite. My comment which you linked is torn on this issue. In some ways he is, or at least he entertains such notions, but on other cases he isn’t. My mind isn’t made up entirely on that issue.

But what does strike me as interesting is your absolutist stance. Any other opinion on Tony Judt is a ‘misuse’, as if it was not a matter of opinion but a purely mechanical matter.

Perhaps it is in this lens that we should see your attack (‘flip flops’, ‘can’t connect emotionally’). Maybe the difference between you and me is that I try to keep my mind open to all viewpoints and not forcefully push all matters into a narrow ideological fold.

Maybe you’ll learn that one can take numerous positions, without regard of how they connect to each other, so to avoid the trap of becomming a narrow-minded ideologue.

        Just a thought!

(But you’re more than welcome to continue to read my comments as obsessively as you do. Mancrushes are cute!)

        • do not flatter yourself by assuming anyone is obsessed w/you.

Surely Annie is right. I bring interest to this site

i did not say you brought interest to the site. i said it’s his job to be ‘interesting’. big dif. leander said you may well be the most interesting case study post-Richard Witty.

not exactly a compliment if you ask me. i think the only person obsessed with you..is you.

        • Citizen says:

Krauss, if you’ve been here awhile you must know that LeaNder is both logical and analytical but she never questions her arch premises & unravels from there: she’s a competent modern German born into her particular German time. She is not even confused by Atzmon’s predilection to be a total humanist and stir up what this really means, especially for his own tribe–he always needs to be read in his context or he’s easy pickings for shallow knew jerk reactions. Don’t forget his first language is Hebrew, not English.

    • interesting imageshak thingy.
Do you suppose that’s something Aubrey Chernick’s software company can concoct, or did CFNS find it scrunched in the pages of an unacceptably pro-Islamic textbook in Florida?

(CFNS = Citizens for National Security, a Chernick-funded witch-hunt group centered in Boca Raton, FL and dedicated to alerting the populace to the ‘threat’ of living while Muslim.)

    • kalithea says:

Ahh…you’re an Islamophobe and smug about it too.

“I’m a bit shocked…to be frank.” To be frank…MY ASS. You wouldn’t know “frank” if he slammed into you! The bullshit meter reads: code red. How far did ya have to dig to come up with that load of crap? Either, you searched atlasshrugs, Jihadwatch or hasbara straight from CAMERA. One things for sure, you were giddy with satisfaction when you hit paydirt!

  2. American says:

Taken together with Phil’s advice to fellow losers and observations on changes consider the US 2010 census:

    Whites- 224 million
    Blacks- 40 million
    Hispanics – 50 million
    Asians- 15 million
    Mixed races – 9 million

Zionism can keep on trying to corral minorities in the US to support Israel but it isn’t going to work. The minorities aren’t minority ‘enough’ any more to need to piggyback the “Lobby” access to US gov and congress. You could take any smart Hispanic or Black leader and if so inclined or made worth his while, turn over 100 million other minorities into enemies of the zionism and Israel Firstdom minority as dangerous to their overall welfare in the US. No one has been interested in mounting an attack like this, but if one was, other minorities would be a force in eleminating Israel firsters in their congressional districts.

    • Citizen says:

So, American, the Jewish Establishment had to break up any possible future US Nazi state by pushing fathead Teddy Kennedy to change our immigration law in 1965 (all the while poo-pooing any projected anchor baby or chain migration impact whines), only to now find itself faced with the fact that blacks, browns, and yellows harbor no white guilt at all, and hence will not be easy converts to AIPAC’s continued agenda? Not to mention, some of the non-whites actually think that Jews are part of the 1%…

(excerpt) Has anyone ever accused Avigdor Lieberman of being too dovish? Too soft on issues like the future of the West Bank, where he resides?
A politician who lives closer to West Palm Beach than to the West Bank thinks she knows better than the hawkish Israeli foreign minister.
Republican Karen Harrington is making a second attempt to unseat Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz in Florida’s 20th District, which runs between Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach. She got 38 percent of the vote in 2010 in the heavily Democratic district with a large Jewish population.
Speaking before a New York audience of opponents to Palestinian statehood and U.S. Middle East policy, Harrington told a dinner for the Hebron Fund that Palestinians already have their own state and it is Jordan…

SEE: The religious-conservative insanity of the American right, By Avirama Golan, Haaretz, 3/14/12
Liberal Jews in the U.S. are doubly fearful – of the messianic insanity now spreading in American politics, of its Israeli version and, most of all, of the link between the two.

(excerpt) …U.S. Democrats are now experiencing a profound fear that the important principle mandating separation of religion and state in the United States is being eroded with horrifying speed. And how unsurprising that this Democratic public includes many Jews – far more than what seems to be the case when Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaps loud applause at an AIPAC convention. These Jews are now doubly fearful – because of the messianic insanity now spreading in American politics, and because of its Israeli version and, most of all, because of the link between the two.
A huge community of secular, traditional, Reform, Conservative and Modern Orthodox Jews is witnessing two political systems that have broken the rules and are working with what looks to them like a worrying lack of restraint. They believe that the connection between the evangelical extremists and the settler extremists, which is being forged over the heads of the American public (and behind the backs of the Israeli public ), has long since passed the bounds of legitimacy – in the huge budgets being invested in it and the brainwashing that is following in its wake.
The way in which Netanyahu is speaking directly to the American right – in what is proving to be a cynical bypassing of the fragile dialogue between Jerusalem and Washington – is arousing frustration here. Human rights organizations, liberal communities, academics and public figures are all expressing dissatisfaction and despair in light of the Haredi-religious-ultra-nationalist extremism in Israel, and the strengthening of the connection between it and ultra-nationalist, white Christianity and extreme right-wing and extreme ultra-Orthodox Jewry in the United States. . .

  4. we need a clean break from zionism, the clean break that got us into zionism has worked out well for its planners, but the one that will get us away from zionism will be more of a natural phenomenom, problem is though, that i think we still may be a few years away, unless of course the economy takes over again.

nature abhors a vacuum, and zionism is becoming an empty space, noone wants to be there anymore except the few, the proud…etc.etc.etc.

  5. stevelaudig says:

Bless Wasserman–Schultz’s dark little heart. We cannot expect courage from snakes such as her who have slithered their way up the political ladder. Grasping power is far too important to allow principle to interfere with retaining it. Her ‘morals’ and ‘ethics’ are as supple as a snake. Call her “Gumby” for the backbone she possesses. If one fears a Horowitz they live in fear and have been/ are not / will never be a reliable ally.

  6. kalithea says:

“And yes, it is about prejudice inside the Jewish community.”

And, what else is new??? The ME, MYSELF AND I community doesn’t want anyone else getting a piece of their action.:

“By agreeing to partake in the event, Wasserman Schultz is helping to further this organization’s nefarious agenda of placing Islamists into positions of American power and influence. It is this stealth jihad which threatens our country not from abroad, but from within.”

It takes one to know one, doesn’t it? God forbid anyone else should place themselves in position of American power and influence but the ME,ME,ME Community.

My advice to the ME,ME,ME Community is: keep pushing; THE EDGE IS NEAR.

  7. ahhiyawa says:

Phil, it’s not prejudice, its politics. I’m sure the ‘Emerge USA’ leadership understand the political constraints of this election year, but what’s far more important is that Muslim and Arab Americans are FINALLY organizing their communities by educating their voters, PAC’s, getting out the vote and lobbying.

  8. I think it is progress in politic of this country .

  9. hophmi says:

Do you have any proof – whatsoever – that Schultz cancelled her speech because of a FrontPageMag article or right wing pressure? Because it doesn’t seem to be in your post.
