I just saw this picture (on James Wall’s blog) but what a pleasure it is. Congressman Steve Rothman released this photo a couple months back, during his run for reelection to Congress from the newly-combined 9th district in New Jersey.

Well, Rothman lost the primary this past week, in a walloping upset, to fellow Congressman Bill Pascrell, despite fierce support from AIPAC and the lobby (as MJ Rosenberg reported this week).

Here’s what Rothman’s office said about the photo above:

Washington, DC – On March 30, 2011, U.S. Missile Defense Agency Director, Lieutenant General Patrick O’Reilly and Arieh Herzog, Director of the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO), came to Congressman Steve Rothman’s Washington DC office for separate meetings with the Congressman to discuss anti-missile system development programs. Congressman Rothman serves on the 15 person House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee that allocates all funding for the U.S. military, as well as for all joint U.S.-Israel defense programs.

Oh and speaking of pulling for two countries at the same time, did you see the Jets and Giants football helmets on the credenzas?! (Thanks to a sharp reader).

wow, that is one heck of a first link phil. “New Jersey’s 9th CD Voters Say No to AIPAC” everyone should open and read it..

the very end:

Weiss emphasizes that “the issue wasn’t Israel; it was Rothman’s Arab and Muslim-baiting which offended Arab-Americans as much as Jews would be offended by an openly anti-Semitic candidate.”

Weiss concludes and clearly wants to stress, that “Bill Pascrell did not win because of the Israel issue. He himself is pro-Israel, just not anti-Arab.”

As Weiss reads the campaign, Pascrell won because of his own strong Get Out The Vote campaign, his door to door effort and “because he is an effective and strong progressive from a district that appreciates that.”

Pascrelli’s victory was a surprise and it could be only an anomaly. Or, it could be the beginning of a new spirit in American politics in which AIPAC no longer controls Congress.

my bold

Wasn’t it Jonathan Pollard who provided Israel with every scrap of information about US missles that he could get his hands on?

MY COMMENT: I hate to be a stickler for accuracy, and I certainly would not want to make a “federal case” out of this, but there appears to be a couch (black leather or Naugahyde®) behind the men with an “end table” at each end of said couch.

FROM MERRIAM-WEBSTER:

Definition of CREDENZA
1: credence
2: a sideboard, buffet, or bookcase patterned after a Renaissance credence; especially : one without legs

Definition of CREDENCE
3: [Middle French, from Old Italian credenza] : a Renaissance sideboard used chiefly for valuable plate
4: a small table where the bread and wine rest before consecration

So does this mean that Jews in Fair Lawn and elsewhere in Bergen County, NJ can no longer be stampeded the ways Jews in Brooklyn were last year?

Hackensack is in the 9th District. Remember how David Remnick was mocked by Steve Frank in the JPost for being from a Jewish family in Hackensack? Maybe this is the revenge of people in Bergen County who don’t like to be mocked.
