The controversy over the Palestinian maps ads is a story with legs. And ad-buyer Henry Clifford’s wish may come true: Americans will learn about the dispossession of Palestinians, history suppressed for decades in this country. NY Daily News report from Celeste Katz:
Assemblymember Robert Castelli [of Westchester County] wrote a letter today to the MTA Metro-North railroad president urging for the removal of a billboard about Israel and Palestine, saying members of the Jewish community were offended by the anti-Israel message and that the advertisement was “more inflammatory than promoting peace.”…
Castelli said he was contacted by “a multitude” of Jewish organizations in his district that were offended by the billboard. Castelli said he consulted those complaints, as well as a letter from The Anti-Defamation League, before deciding to draft the letter to Metro-North President Howard Permut. The Anti-Defamation League cited COPIP as an anti-Israel group. It said the billboards failed to reflect key facts and that the issue is “extremely complex and cannot be summarized in a series of four maps.”
Henry Clifford, the chairman of COPIP, said there isn’t room on the billboards for the entirety of the issue, but that everything on the advertisement is an “accurate, historical, geographical portrayal.”
Is there a Kickstart funding project in the making?
Could the brave Mr. Clifford be backed up with enough money to replicate his success elsewhere. Like Washington?

I guess that is why NY Times articles about Israel/Palestine do not include maps that show where Israel’s borders end and its occupation begins. The Times, like another member of the Israel Lobby, the ADL, doesn’t want to confuse readers with facts on the ground.

The first was very sarcastic but not in violation of the moderation policy, and it wasn’t passed.
I posted a second short comment questioning why and that wasn’t passed either.
Unless Mondoweiss applies a sensible moderation policy they can’t expect the support of the community. I’ve donated the last few campaigns and I can’t see why I should put up with arbitrary comments not being passed.
In short, I won’t.
So, farewell to all – I’ll direct my energy and donations elsewhere.

I find that when I post before midday, the posts don’t get through till evening. I suspect that this is because the time difference between here and the US means that the mods are not on duty. For the relatively short time I’ve been involved in the effort for Palestinian justice, I’ve thought the series of four chronological maps is the most powerful imagery available. In a glance it tells the story.
Far from complexity, the word to think about is perversity. All should look at the maps and wonder about the perversity of Israel claiming to be a victim that is always on the verge of being “driven into the sea”.
So many positive things are happening as the truth comes out. What could send me into a deep depression, however, would be the election of Romney, the very model of a one-percenter and a guy that would bring any and all Israel fanatics accidentally left behind by Obama back into the administration.
