TV3 broadcaster Vincent Browne insists he is not anti-Semitic after branding Israel a “cancer” in foreign affairs.

Mr Browne had been complaining on his show about the lack of discussion of Israel during the last US presidential debate between Republican nominee Mitt Romney and US President Barack Obama.

“Israel is the cancer in foreign affairs. It polarises the Islamic community of the world against the rest of the world,” he said.

“Unless you deal with the problem of Israel and the Palestinians in that part of the world, there’s going to be conflict and disharmony. It’s a massive injustice — they stole the land from the Arabs.”

Mr Browne admitted that his choice of language could have been better but insisted that the criticism was justified.

“What I resent is the suggestion that because you’re critical of Israel, you’re automatically anti-Semitic. I don’t think that’s acceptable,” he said.

Mr Browne refused to apologise for his remarks, saying that Israel was founded in 1948 by taking land from the Arabs.

He said it was “blackmail” to try to brand everyone who was critical of Israel as anti-Semitic. “I don’t think I differ too much from Irish or European foreign policy,” he said.

We are back to page one, if you criticise Israel you are an anti-semite!!
And I tought we have been doing the same since several years, in one way or another.
Why should Mr. Browne apologise for his remark, he speaks the truth?
Or anyone in this blog, outside diamok or eee, think that what Israel does is a normal human way to do diplomatic business? Daily air attacks on Gaza, highjacking ships on high seas and killing US citizens, (remember the MS Liberty, 34 dead), getting heavily involved in our elections, etc?

  2. Do you all have to do to be President Mr Obama. You should also consult the Drone manufacturer how to make sure that the little children killed in Pakistan by Drone can grow a wing and fly to freedom ,liberty, and justice offered by the US with the return leg of the Drone to play with your kids with crayon and sand or softball.

  3. Although the Holocaust was mentioned right after the rockets from Gaza, no explicit link was drawn.

I agree. Weiss is really reaching with this one.

    • Donald says:

“Although the Holocaust was mentioned right after the rockets from Gaza, no explicit link was drawn.”

Right. It was done implicitly and very obviously. He talks about the rockets, then the Holocaust museum, which reminds him what evil is, then reaffirms our bond with Israel. It’s all thrown together in one great big massive pile, which is that there are evil anti-semites, whether they are Nazis or Gazans, who are out to kill innocent Jewish children and so we have to stand with Israel for the same reason we have to condemn the Nazis.

What if there had been an ad where Obama visited Warsaw and learned about the Warsaw ghetto and then switched to Gaza under siege and threw in some boilerplate remarks about evil and how we should never support collective punishment? Everyone would be screaming about how he had just compared the Israelis to the Nazis, without any explicit statement being made. That’s what he did here. Except it was Gazans and Nazis, not Israelis and Nazis.

I’d personally like to see a moratorium on Nazi comparisons in virtually all situations. In a way it cheapens all other human rights violations, as though there is one standard of true evil, the Nazi regime and everything else has to be measured against the Nazis or equated to what they did before one can condemn some other atrocity.

      • eljay says:

Rockets from Gaza = ["Remember] the Holocaust[!"] = evil = Iran + nuclear weapons. Gosh, what point could he possibly be making?

      • seafoid says:

Evil includes killing innocent civilians for reasons of empire. It doesn’t matter whether they are Yiddish speaking Jews in the 40s or Pakistani peasants today.

Yad VaShem emphaises ‘never again” but it doesn’t apply to brown people, obviously.

    I’m voting for Jill Stein.

And, talk about trivializing the Holocaust!

  5. Obama says, “I went to Yad Vashem … remind myself of the nature of evil.”
    ——————
I went to Yad Vashem, too (Christmas Eve 2002) but learned something else there.

The place was nearly empty, an American couple, me and a group of American Yeshiva students with their Rabbi. I stood next to the group and listened what the Rabbi was explaining. At the end the Rabbi told his group: “We have a mission in the world”. – I didn’t know before about a Jewish-Israeli mission and to this day I wonder what it is.

  6. What bothers me above all is the political calculation that what American Jews and those who look to them for thought leadership need the most assurance on is that the US under Obama will protect Israel from Iran, no matter what. If they have their eyes open, they should see that the biggest threat to Israel is Likud-Beiteinu, well-funded by Sheldon Adelson, its public informed by Adelson’s free paper Israel Hayom, in a mad rush to start the war with Iran that can only end very badly for Israel.
