Culture Project in partnership with CODEPINK presents

Blueprint for Accountability: Drone Warfare

Monday, October 29
7:00pm
Culture Project (45 Bleecker Street, New York City)

Join activist, journalist, and co-founder of CODEPINK, Medea Benjamin, just back from the Pashtun territories in Pakistan where she traveled with families of Drone victims and Imran Kahn, for an in-depth conversation and Q&A about her latest book, Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control.  The presentation will begin with Things We Make, a powerful theatrical exploration of drone warfare directed by Shana Solomon and a presentation ofThe US Peace Memorial Foundation 2012 Peace Prize. There will be a book signing with Medea Benjamin in the lobby following the conversation.

Medea Benjamin visited Afghanistan just weeks after the 2002 American invasion.  There, on the ground, talking with victims of the strikes, she learned the reality behind the “precision bombs” on which U.S. forces were becoming increasingly reliant.  Drone Warfare is a comprehensive look at the growing menace of robotic warfare, with an extensive analysis of who is producing the drones, where they are being used, who “pilots” these unmanned planes, who are the victims and what are the legal and moral implications.

Apart from the atrocities that happen now, drones represent this trend: our weapon labs develop very cool new weapons, then we spend years in fear that our opponents will copy the idea and thus we rush to implement it. Opponents try to copy the idea, but at some point they get examples of the genuine article and correct their designs.

Among examples: anthrax is such a fine powder form that can be easily spread, stealth technology for the aircraft, drones, computer viruses. As long as we have Gatling guns and the savages have the flintlocks the civilization is secure. Now computers of Saudi oil industry got severe damage from a virus attributed to Iranians because it is an adaptation of a virus we used against Iran, while a pretty stealthy cute little drone appeared in Israel, apparently out of nowhere.

So quite possibly drones can be surrepticiously loaded onto a cargo ship and launched close to shore. There is also stealth submarine technology developed for drug trade — stealthy drones and stealthy submarines would make nice combination. As the “virus of Arabia” shows, when we are hit precisely in the manner we hit others before, the outrage is simply not there.
