Mahmoud Al-Titi, 25, was killed when Israeli troops fired a live bullet at him, Palestinian medical sources. One Palestinian was killed and a number of others were injured during a West Bank clash with IDF forces that saw soldiers open fire after being attacked, the army said on Tuesday evening.
An IDF force entered the West Bank village of Fawar, southwest of Hebron, in pursuit of Palestinians suspected of hurling Molotov cocktails at Israeli vehicles in the South Mount Hebron area.
A major riot erupted in the area, and soldiers came under a hail of rocks, the IDF Spokesman’s Office said.
“During the disturbance, a part of the force found itself in a situation in which soldiers felt their lives to be in danger, and opened fire on the attackers,” the IDF added.
Red Crescent paramedics evacuated the injured.
Palestinians have identified Mahmoud al-Titi, 22, as the man killed during the clash, and have circulated his photograph on Twitter.
According to Abir Kopty of the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee, Titi was a communications and journalism student. He was also among the founders of a Hebron youth movement in support of freeing Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails. Titi’s funeral is Wednesday at 12:30 in Fawar.
The army is investigating the incident.
Israeli troops shot dead a Hamas militant and wounded two other Palestinians with live fire during a clash with stone-throwers near the southern West Bank city of Hebron on Tuesday, Palestinian security officials said.
They named the dead man as Mahmud al-Titi, 23, and said he was a member of the militant Islamic group.
The Israeli military said that soldiers entered the Al-Fawwar refugee camp, close to the Jewish settlement of Beit Haggai, after Palestinians hurled rocks and petrol bombs at passing Israeli vehicles.
The area is frequently the scene of clashes between Palestinians on one side and Israeli soldiers and settlers on the other.
"A violent riot erupted when they entered Al-Fawwar and Palestinians hurled rocks at them," an army spokeswoman told AFP.
