  • Who are we to stand in moral and legal judgment of the settlers' killers?
    • The essential question is, why should they "sit down together and work things out" when it is an occupation that must end - not a family feud.

Max's piece, especially when taken together with the other two preceding it, serves to remind us that the situation is much too complex to merely be looked at as a simple case of murder. The machine of the occupation must be fully examined, including the labyrinthine history, that gives rise to this moment in time where four illegal squatters were gunned down. The hellish everyday life of Hebron must be looked at - it is a microcosm of the occupation itself - and from there, perhaps we can learn something.

Platitudes about "liberty and justice for all" don't accomplish this; in fact, nothing accomplishes this without a huge effort at understanding. I greatly appreciate Max Ajl's superb writing, not only of this article but the many others he has produced, not only for their fine reportage of facts but that he looks below the surface and provokes further examination.

  • Pastel settlers
    • My sentiments exactly, Donald. "What the f*ck took you so long?" ran through my mind while reading this, and also Nicholas Kristof's piece last week on the Gaza siege. The NY Times has fallen badly on its ass so many times that it's close to having zero credibility; I don't know if this article is an attempt to salvage a dying readership or if it's the beginning of the paper's attempts to restore its image.

It's not only the NY Times who has ignorant readers; most newspapers do.

    • It's all a matter of context, Witty. Sure, Bronner and Phil may have said something similar, but Phil isn't a shameless, pandering pro-Israel shill.

    • It must be on his new T-shirt. The one that says "F**k Palestine" is in the wash.

  • Makdisi in Houston Chronicle: Americans must confront the dispossession of Arabs in '48
    • KenDavis, why don't you learn the history and that would answer your question. My God, such ignorance...

  • Bibi in the bunker: you're either with us or you 'ram' us
    • I am tired of the outrageous chutzpah of Bibi the bozo and his ilk who expect the world to believe that launching air strikes and killing 1,400 people is somehow courageous and "defending ourselves." It turns my stomach when sociopaths like Netanyahu continue on a course of rampaging, pillaging and killing innocent people while claiming they are the ones who are under threat. I don't know why anyone with half a brain can even listen to this gasbag without getting nauseous or utterly disgusted.

What is most bizarre, however, is that Netanyahu blames the Goldstone Report for the problems in the West Bank. This psychopath just doesn't understand cause and effect. Is anyone so stupid not to see that his "economical" efforts in the West Bank are for the sake of the settlers who live there? And that every carrot he tosses to the Palestinians is nothing more than a decoy while he continues to allow the theft of their land and water? It's a cheesy pacification effort to help keep his agenda intact.
