A couple weeks back Phil Weiss did a post imagining what he would have done in other circumstances. Jack Ross offers his list:
– I would have been a proud assimilated German citizen of Jewish faith.
Had I lived that long, I would have gotten out as soon as it was
clear it would be Hitler or the Communists, which was as early as
1930-31.
Born c. 1880 in
Eastern Europe – I would have become a Bundist and remained an
unrepentant radical, whether that would lead me to the Warsaw Ghetto,
the Gulag, or to be a crotchety old man in Brighton Beach.
Born c. 1900 – I would have joined
the Socialist Party but remained fervently anti-Communist, and would
probably have followed the trajectory of Morrie Ryskind from "Old
Guard" socialist in the 30s to bohemian rightist, more old than new but
not completely old, in the 40s and 50s.
Born c. 1945 – I would have been a freedom rider, and then I would
have been in the avowedly libertarian circle on the new left of Murray
Rothbard and Karl Hess, and would have probably gone on to become a
doctrinaire libertarian in my middle age.
Born c. 1985 anywhere in the Muslim World – I would have been al-Qaeda all the way.
