I try not to be cynical on this blog, as I try not to be cynical in life. Gets you nowhere. Lincoln told me so. Michael Scheuer wrote yesterday that Israel wants the Islamic world up in arms because it needs the U.S./Obama committed to its maximalist territorial war, and you won't get that without fireworks. Well, surprise, today the Washington Post reports that Gaza is radicalizing Afghanistan against the U.S.
Where is Obama, in the war for hearts and minds? Shackled to Rahm/Axelrod? Writes a Muslim whose heart is heavy, even at his Ivy League school:
I hate watching carnage. I have the same depressed feeling when I
watched the Mumbai massacre or the Serbs slaughter Bosnian Muslims or (I
vaguely recall) a Tel Aviv disco bombing. Only this time the nice liberals are
quiet.
I don’t really understand Israeli policies – how does it
help their country survive when they turn their neighbors against them. They
attacked Lebanon
and produced Hezballah. They wanted to weaken Fatah and supported Hamas. Their
policies are strengthening Islamic militant (and I mean militants) movements –giving
them a reason for their existence and thousands of believers who watch this
turkey shoot televised live on satellite tv. What is the strategic calculus?
