Self-censorship inside the Jewish family

My mom wrote this to me after my family’s Seder the other night, which I ended up leading (poorly):

I wanted to thank you again for leading the Seder. I also wish to tell you I appreciated your restraint in limiting your commentary. In fact, I thought there were points in the reading when mention of the Palestinians would have been in order. You were considerate to all. Thank you. … Your cause is gathering even more support in Israel. You must feel heartened.

P.S. My mom and I don’t really talk about the issue, though she let me publish this note. And meanwhile I urge a public battle inside the Jewish family, on a stage at a shul, near you.
