I think they talk about this kind of scolding/enabling within families in the recovery movement… Unable to veto Israeli plans for anything (though happy to veto Palestinian aspirations), the U.S. has come up with a new formulation to try and beg Israel not to build out the East Jerusalem settlement/suburb of Gilo further on illegally-occupied land. From Haaretz (thanks to Ilene Cohen):
The United States urged Israel on Wednesday to halt a plan that would approve new construction in a contentious Jerusalem neighborhood, saying that such a move would harm U.S. efforts to thwart the Palestinian bid for statehood at the United Nations….
U.S. envoy to Israel, Dan Shapiro, met with [Interior Minister Eli] Yishai on Wednesday, and urged him to shelf [sic] the Gilo construction plan, warning it could push international support in favor of the Palestinians in their move for UN recognition.
“The United States urged Israel on Wednesday to halt a plan that would approve new construction in a contentious Jerusalem neighborhood, ”
Like the financial regulator back in 2006 asking Citigroup to manage its expansion plans prudently. But when the music is playing you have to dance . and you are so in the moment. and what can possibly go wrong. ? Same with Israel.
Germany shows how it i could be done:
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4139343,00.html
“Israel may lose German sub deal
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s frustration over new east Jerusalem housing plans may jeopardize Israel’s chances of getting new Dolphin class submarine ”
Now, I don’t for the moment believe Germany will actually follow through with its threat, but if you take action addressing Israel’s real strategic interests (particularly its power projection ability), you will get real results.
“saying that such a move would harm U.S. efforts to thwart the Palestinian bid for statehood at the United Nations….”
Clearly unable to convince Israel to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. Clearly unable to convince Israel to stop their illegal activities because it seriuosly undermines the US. Trying to show how these illegal activities undermine Israel based on the 67 border is one of the last ditch efforts as the two state solution shrivels up and is becoming unrecognizable.
Phil..think the Mondo team will be interested.
Horrifying.

We are all Scott Olsen: Occupy Oakland #OWS
Posted Oct. 26, 2011, 8:53 p.m. EST by OccupyWallSt
Late last night, Scott Olsen, a former Marine, two-time Iraq war veteran, and member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, sustained a skull fracture after being shot in the head with a police projectile while peacefully participating in an Occupy Oakland march. He remains unconscious in critical condition at Oakland’s Highland Hospital.
Olsen was hit at close range. After demonstrators rush to Olsen’s aid, an Oakland cop waits a few beats before lobbing a second tear-gas canister at the crowd. They are attending to Olsen when the canister explodes, sending smoke everywhere.
Press release from Iraq Veterans Against the War.
Our hearts and prayers go out to Scott and his family.

OK. I am not an expert on negotiation and I don’t pretend to understand how PA or Israeli politicians think, but…. If you read the Palestine papers posted by Al Jazeera a while ago, this was stated by PA’s Erakat:
Erekat went on to enumerate some of the settlements that the PA was willing to concede: French Hill, Ramat Alon, Ramat Shlomo, Gilo, Talpiot, and the Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem’s old city.
So if the PA was willing to concede Gilo, why is it now a big stink.
Who’s playing what game here?
“could” push international support in favor of the palestinians? hahaha.
Its literally the whole world vs the US and Israel – how much further does the world need to be pushed.
At this point, who cares – its gonna be one state, and thats a good thing.
