Israeli ambassador Dr. Michael Oren wrote a letter praising J Street that was in the press packet at the Israel lobby group’s conference. Here it is. Notice how the United States and Israel are joined at the hip, and how a sense of Jewish peoplehood is the source of Jewish creativity.
The past four and a half years have been a period of profound challenges for both our countries, and yet one of immense accomplishment. Together, the United States and Israel have produced the most advanced multi-layered anti-ballistic system in the world, we’ve greatly expanded our commercial ties, and probed new horizons in science, medicine, and technology. We have worked tirelessly for peace, and have succeeded in restarting direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians. Together, we are working to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Throughout my term I have been privileged to uphold the principal [sic] of Klal yisrael, the ideal of a Jewish people which can bridge political and religious differences and which remains the source of our creativity and strength. That principal [sic] will continue to guide me always.
L’hitraot in Israel
Dr. Michael B. Oren
The letter puts a cherry on top of a relationship that wasn’t always that great. Oren once feuded with J Street and said, “They claim they’re pro-Israel… They are calling for Israel to be condemned in the Security Council for the settlements and they are condemning some of our best friends on the Hill. So they can call themselves what they like.” Then in 2010 Oren and J Street patched up. Thanks to Mitchell Plitnick.
