Rethink Israel tweeted this 18-year-ago image of Natalie Portman

A couple weeks ago we reported Sheldon Adelson’s view that Israel’s image can be remade among the young and skeptical with a new initiative he’s involved with, Rethink Israel, where people would discover that Israel was doing lots of great things, like battling the problem of anorexic fashion models.

(Later, a J Street leader said that this initiative is “doomed to fail” because it ignores the Palestinian question at the heart of the conflict.)

Well, the picture above is the latest from Rethink Israel:

I wonder if this is going to work…

Do they really think that tweeting pics of HasBarbies is going to make any difference?

it’s more likely to damage portman’s branding.

My first thought was yes, but the more I think about it, the less I’m sure if she’s that opposed to Adelson’s agenda. Maybe his economic politics but on Israel? I’m not so sure she’s all that different from Dershowitz on this issue. He was, after all, her mentor at Harvard when she was there.

I’m not sure. She shows more animation here than she does in any of her lousy ‘performances’ on screen.

I believe Adelson’s exact words were “the cavalry coming over the hill”.

The website will be a total flop. The reason is simple: the power of Israel is elite power. Campaign donations, favourable media coverage(which has less cachet in American culture than before since it has become so fragmented).

But to fundamentally change the image you need to capture the grassroots. And in an even contest, a Palestinian will crush any Zionist defending Apartheid.

Hell, Jewish Zionist groups don’t even want Jews to discuss the occupation, like the recently cancelled Avraham Burg speech(which he later had to move to a dorm) or that theater which had to close its play after donor pressure.

Take away this top-down pressure and what do you have?
Post-Birthright has Adelson been giving away his cash in a wise manner? The Romney bonanza was a disaster. This new website? Who even knows about it except people who are already pretty knowledgable about the conflict(and as such can’t be tricked by mere PR)?

Think about all that cash that could have gone to much better use. It’s crazy, and sad.

      @ Krauss
“Think about all that cash that could have gone to much better use. It’s crazy, and sad.”

Or think of psychomotoring, impetuous Jack Ruby, a lounge owner who let his dogs chew up his car upholstery because they were his “kids.” His three bullets could have gone to much better use. Imagine if he had lots of cash to throw around instead. He did it, “because somebody had to.” You couldn’t count on the cops.

Naftali Bennet is saying the same thing: We can’t win with peace or arguments, so we have to work on our brand image!

In the post-ironic age, that’s cave man talk…

Ever notice how many who harangue earnestly and hotly against spinning the news, in the next or prior breath–spin it like crazy?

Sheldon Adelson thinking he can be hip and cool selling brand Israel.

    Reminds me of

Richard Nixon flashing a peace sign as he gets on the helicopter after resigning in disgrace.

I wonder if the ruins she’s standing on and amongst are of a Palestinian village. The pose would be fitting in a contemptuous sort of way.

Something in the photo was probably Palestinian at some point.

      [email protected];

Leave it out ritzl – she was an teenager at the time. Barely out of childhood..

How much does anyone know of the real world and it’s history at the tender age of eighteen?

Anyway as much as the Zionists appear enamoured of Portman – so does P. Weiss appear similarly besotted by the comely Natalie P – why else keep mentioning her ?

Not to mention Walid’s ongoing infatuation with N .P..

Adelson and the zionists can’t spin their way out of the facts and the world seems to get it, finally, that justice for the Palestinians is Step 1

… and doesn’t Sheldon have online gambling to battle and some federal corruption charges breathing down his octogenarian neck?

You and Adelson’s warped fascination for Jewish celebrities are just two sides of the same coin.

Talking of Hollywood figures and Israel, people might be interested in this article in The Independent about a high powered producer having another career working for Mossad. Amongst other things he was implicated in the smuggling of NUCLEAR SWITCHES to Israel. Portman has written a screen play based on Amos Oz’s autobiography; she is also directing the movie, and playing the part of Mr. Oz’s mother in the film, which will be a joint US-Israeli production. NIS has sprung a ton of cash to finance her project. It will be a period piece, set in later 1940’s.

She’s a dual citizen. She hopes to have the movie language in Hebrew. If that gets the green light, we Americans get to read the English translation while watching the film?
Or would it be dubbed? If so, would the moving lips be out of synch?
